Nothing. Judging people for the things they do or do not posses is lazy, unpleasant and entirely inaccurate. It also indicates a lack of self esteem and a need to feel superior.
I do know people, mainly women, who do this. They are not nice to be around and I avoid them.

A big new car, hardly any are bought cash it's not impressive

My DP bought his new car this year by trading in his 2021 car for 23k and then using 24k to pay the difference…he does it because…he hates debt, he likes new cars with little maintenance and he keeps them looking perfect.

@weareallcats I live in a terraced house in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the South West! But I still firmly believe if you can’t afford off-street parking owning a shiny new Range Rover is extremely cringe behaviour.

To be honest the other person on this thread has it right - you shouldn’t really have one unless you’re deep in the country.

What's the rule if you can afford off-road parking but can't be bothered? Or if you need the car for wheelchairs or similar equipment? Do you gather all your information before judging people?

There are definitely BMWs and Mercedes available on Motability.

If you have an 8-10k deposit that you don't get back, yeah.

Same sex children in identical outfits

Excessive jewellery

Pug dogs

My daughters are a year apart they are 5 and 6. I nearly always have to dress them in the same outfit otherwise they argue and want what the other has on.

im not rich or trying to look rich. Thanks!!

People who only eat food from M&S and constantly go on about it.

Heaven forbid people just like M&S food...

Fake watches, and taking your Waitrose bags for life to Aldi!

Ha we do that! Definitely not trying to look rich.

What a lovely thread to wake up. What a delightful lovely bunch of people you are. Sneeringly grim. Ugh. Only skimmed it and it’s made me feel so sorry for every one of you who gets off on sneering at a family who feel proud of their Range Rover Evoque. Or god forbid, their coach handbag.
ps you can spot people like you a mile off too. Your inner ugliness will transcend and shine right through the veneer that you put on out there in the real world, believe me.

I think the message behind the Coach, Range Rover Evoque ( pick your label) is the that the owner has some sort if money/status/cache.
Having labels is sneery in of itself. Being “proud” is not something to aspire to!
Kind shiny people don’t make it all about them.

@Booyakashaa what’s something that screams I’m mean but trying to look funny.
It’s not working op.

Are we supposed to admire the titled family for this?

They can be as scruffy as they like, of course. They'll still have that title to open doors for them.

Not admire. But to understand that wealth and ostentatious display is unnecessary and impresses no one. And at times is vulgar.

Expensive cars on finance plans
Taking the kids out of school for a fortnight Sani holiday at term time prices
Luxury brand handbags that are not leather (unless you are vegan or something), especially the LV ones with the logo all over
Any fake designer goods (i mean what is the point? Plasticky poir quality fake prada bag bought in majorca...)

Of course ostentatious display is unnecessary if you have a title. I agree with you there. But I don't see any reason for anyone else to take their standard from people in a privileged position. They can afford to do as they please.

I bought a Coach bag on a whim because I just really liked the design/colour.
5 years later it still looks perfect despite a lot of use. It's my favourite bag by far.
I drive a tiny car though and don't care whether people think I am rich or not.

Same, coach bag still going strong after five years, used every day for work and still looks new. Beautiful made. Tiny logo.

My DS and friends now shop exclusively for vintage clothing, because they don’t want to look like fake rich kids. DS is working his way through DH's ancient adidas and Nike sweatshirts from the 80s and 90s.

It may just be a student thing like it was back in my day. We bought most of our clothes from charity shops and jumble sales to “look different”.

DS is very condescending about street fashion.

He does, however, love a RL quarter zip and wears my 40yr old Barber jacket. Clothes have to look battered and well worn for casual wear. They do smarten up when the occasion calls for it. DS has discovered the iron and although his T shirts may be vintage he likes them ironed.

Nike airforce are the popular footwear but they have to look like they’ve spent a weekend in a festival muddy field. Crocs are the footwear of choice for popping to Tescos.

A pair of pristine Nikes are a big giveaway apparently. No rich kid would be seen dead in them. DS cleaned his ( well gave them a quick wipe) yesterday to go out with us for a meal. If the occasion calls for it it’s the tan shoes ( last cleaned in 2021) with smart pink or blue shirt, long sleeve, with chinos and Schoffel gilet. Either rugby or young farmers uniform.

So yes you can spot fake rich a mile off. Their shoes are too clean and they go for brand new rather than vintage family hand me downs.

I disagree with personal number plates being fake rich. We have them because we buy cars outright and it stops my SIL constantly commenting on how wonderful it is to have a brand new car every 2 yrs. We also never buy new. Most people I know buy cars outright and use personal number plates for the same reason. You don’t really want to draw attention to the fact you have a brand new car since it’s more likely to get pinched.

😂😂😂

Holidaysrhere · 06/06/2025 06:49

People commenting on this thread. Seriously.
Obviously are obsessed with social status.
I feel ‘enlightened’ about most of these comments. For example, unless you feel socially inferior, who really thinks that carefully about North Face - it’s just a brand for hiking in. People aren’t trying to look rich!
I really recommend to those people commenting on this thread you might want to reflect on what you spend you time thinking about. Isn’t life too short?

Maybe it's easier to get car finance than a mortgage? Maybe some people like cars and sre less bothered about houses?
We're all different.

People who buy their own clothes and bags - seems to be the new version of those awful plebs who buy their own furniture.

Surely if "true rich" is having the right amount of dirt in your suitably vintage trainers, curating that look for yourself is just as try-hard as anything else? But some of the posts here seem to suggest we should grovel to the teens in vintage clothes and their mum's flying first class in trackies, and sneer at everyone else not for trying to look rich but for getting it wrong.

Newsflash - the lower orders don't all secretly aspire to be, and fail at, being you.

Definitelymaybenoyes · 05/06/2025 22:03

Most cars with new number plates! (I'm aware many get these for work so that's a bit different).

The fact of the matter is, most people can't afford a new car outright but for some INSANE reason this nation insists on persuading random strangers that they are indeed loaded by driving around in a car that they can't afford. When I see them, I do often think if the person driving it knows it's the biggest depreciating asset a person can own.

I'm all for a BMW 1 series with an old number plate if it's got low mileage and runs well!

This is a classic. In my region of the UK a swanky car is everything to some people. Shit house, shit everything else but brand new Range Rover or BMW essential.
