Sounds like a mean girls thread to me. 🥱

Totally agree.

Fake watches, and taking your Waitrose bags for life to Aldi!

Fake watches yes but some of the most wealthy folks I know are not above a shop in Aldi and have a thrifty attitude e.g will buy second hand clothes for their kids. Not the super-rich admittedly but folks who are easily in the top 5% or higher in both wealth and income terms.

Genuinly rich would have the shopping done for them..correct.

Most really rich people shop for themselves unless they are genuinely too busy most of the time to do so, or are so famous that they have to have security guards with them whenever they go out. Surely most Mumsnetters know that Catherine, TPOW, likes to do her own shopping, at least sometimes?

100% people who start and participate in sneery threads about what other people may be wearing or owning and have existential crises about current social status markers.

Lip fillers

DisruptiveCumin · 06/06/2025 05:36

Designer names and labels plastered all over the outfit.

XWKD · 06/06/2025 05:40

Branded goods. Having someone else's monogram on your clothes is common.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 06/06/2025 05:40

Anything obviously designer or trying to be designer. Why do they need to let the world know the label?

Personalised plates. Urgh.

Ostentatious or flash cars.

A very long time ago I worked (consecutively) for 2 families. 1 titled, semi aristocracy, the other an oil family. The titled family walked around in ancient (but good quality) clothes, drove a nondescript car. The oil family, predictably, were all flash and designer. Taught me a lot.

I take the same bags to every shop and shop in Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and independent food shops. Very insecure to worry about what others think of your shopping bag, or to comment on those of other shoppers.

No the bags are like those old quilted nylon dressing gowns but in black. A triumph of marketing in making something unappealing covetable.

I love mine.

I have a couple of Coach handbags. I’m not pretending to be wealthy, I’m just not enough of an idiot to buy a real LV or Chanel.

And I have an Audi but it’s 11 years old and I own it outright.

Edited

I have a couple of Coach handbags also. Thank you, outlet website. Many years later, they are still going strong and not falling apart at all. They will outlive me.

I also have a Coach watch, Coach sunglasses and a few other Coach pieces. Outlet shopping, especially online, is fabulous. No need to shop there now as I don't need anything else as everything has held up.

Don’t know if anyone else has said it…..but coasters on tables 👀😂
My Nana told me that years ago 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Rich people who’ve paid a lot of money for amazing quality furniture know the finish won’t get ruined by a drink ring.
People who’ve bought budget furniture than looks bougie use coasters because the finish is crappy quality and will get ruined by drink rings.

Edited

But it's not trying to look rich not to want coffee rings on your table.

It's a sign you haven't spent loads on your table - okay. Owning a cheaper table is not trying to look rich. Or are "poor" people meant to eat off the floor?

Oftenaddled · 06/06/2025 06:09

I am a scruffy person with a few designer outfits or accessories that are gifts from more fashionable people.

Am I a poor person trying to look rich when I wear them, or am I letting the side down by not wearing more austere clothing and sneering at these gifts? Who knows.

This is not a very sensible thread. Everything listed can be owned by rich and poor alike. So you're just judging whether people of a particular class or income bracket "should" own various things.

Yes! Wealth signalling.

KaleQueen · 06/06/2025 06:10

What a lovely thread to wake up. What a delightful lovely bunch of people you are. Sneeringly grim. Ugh. Only skimmed it and it’s made me feel so sorry for every one of you who gets off on sneering at a family who feel proud of their Range Rover Evoque. Or god forbid, their coach handbag.
ps you can spot people like you a mile off too. Your inner ugliness will transcend and shine right through the veneer that you put on out there in the real world, believe me.

Are we supposed to admire the titled family for this?

They can be as scruffy as they like, of course. They'll still have that title to open doors for them.

This is quite a sad thread imvho.
not everyone has money to spend on labels, so what if they want to spend on something you wouldn’t otherwise buy. Leave people alone. Love and be loved.

It’s clearly just an excuse to be faintly spiteful about certain styles. Sooooooo typical of groups of women (or a particilar type of woman). Being very short of money I don’t find it “just for fun” but humour does evaporate when faced with real financial anxiety.

isthismylifenow · 06/06/2025 06:15

From an outsider, what a nasty thread.

Why is class so important in the UK?

As in the rest of the world, other people do not care what puffer jacket you wear or what handbag you use.

I'm embarrassed for some posters on here.

Doesn’t it depend where the terraced house is ?

Mumsnet is the only place I know where all terraced houses are occupied by poors. Must spend a lot of time sneering at all those Kensington upstarts.

People who actually have money don't need to advertise it. I love nothing more than rocking up to BC or First in a comfortable track suit and watching all these glammed up women (especially) with their fake LV/Dior bags hoping to get upgraded...the look of hatred when I waddle on the plane and turn left .... because I actually paid for my ticket... sorry I'm not normally a gloater but airports definitely do something to some people including me 😁

You are advertising that you have money, though, and you are gloating.

I doubt anyone is that interested in where you sit on the plane. I've travelled first class quite a lot - never paying for it but work related. Nobody has ever reacted like that. If you're getting looks at hatred at all, it'll be something else.
