I'm 65 and live on the border of a National Park, so I'm out hiking most weekends. North Face jackets are not just worn by me and my husband, but by most people we see, it would appear. Why? Mine is 10 years old and still going strong. They're windproof, waterproof and extremely durable. When it's colder I can get a fleece underneath. Perhaps it's less about image and more about practicality for many people?.

SirRaymondClench · 06/06/2025 06:56

Starting a thread looking down on people who buy what they want with their money.

That screams "I'm broke trying to look rich" to me.

justgoandgetpizza · 06/06/2025 06:56

I’ll probably get annihilated for this but the outrage from some that they might be <gasp> considered poor is quite funny.

Something our family has (well, DH really) has been mentioned countless times on this thread. I will get over it. It really isn’t that big of a deal!

(besides, we ARE quite poor due to nursery fees!)

A Range Rover in a terraced house.

There are many streets in London where terraced houses are worth £1m+.

This is a really mean-spirited, sneery thread.

This.

Nasty thread.

Gross thread

Oftenaddled · 06/06/2025 06:58

I live in a teeny house because I neither need nor want a bigger one.

What's the approved ratio of house size and cost to car size and cost for me, please? Or should I have paid for a bigger house to make sure I'm classified correctly?

Good question. I'm not sure what the approved algorithm is.

I haven't seen anyone here outraged that they themselves could be considered poor.

I find it distasteful that the OP and others answering consider poverty a joke to be detected and sneered at, based on violations of their taste.

Ihateboris · 06/06/2025 07:01

But how do you actually KNOW that the person carrying the designer bag, driving the Range Rover or whatever is NOT rich??

Calliopespa · 06/06/2025 07:01

Slightyamusedandsilly · 06/06/2025 06:45

Not admire. But to understand that wealth and ostentatious display is unnecessary and impresses no one. And at times is vulgar.

Yes I took it more like that. Flash is often people hankering after recognition.

Speaking of socials, and this isn't about clothing or other material possessions.

I know a woman who posts on FB/Tiktok etc about her jetset lifestyle always travelling the world. I met her in real life a few times so I was interested in following her adventures.
She's always getting upgraded to first class on flights. Standard rooms to suites in hotels. Invited by randoms to Michelin star restaurants and so on. I wondered, what's your secret, I'm never that lucky, what am I doing wrong 😂
One day the travel timeline didn't add up (3 different cities in less than 48 hours which was a physical impossibility) and some of the photos looked suspiciously professional, so I did a bit of digging.
It turned out she wasn't travelling anywhere apart from the occasional weekend to Spain. She was just sat at home with barely a penny to her name (like myself) , grabbing photos from hotel websites and pretending to live this amazing lifestyle.

That's quite sad, actually.

It must be satire. Surely?

Fake Louis V bags. Fake any bags really.

If I had all the money in the world I wouldn't ever spend my £ on a Louis Vuitton bag. I think the initials everywhere are just awful. Same goes for Gucci - just not a fan.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/06/2025 07:09

Why is everyone going on about North Face, it’s not a designer make is it? Jackets are under a tenner on EBay so it can’t be ?Confused

@Booyakashaa - What’s something that screams ‘I’m broke, and bitter’

Just for fun

I think…starting threads translucently veiled as ‘humorous’ which invite other broke and bitter people to make spiteful comments about people they are jealous off as a coping mechanism.

Changinggoalposts · 06/06/2025 07:16

Money talks, wealth whispers.

IwasDueANameChange · 06/06/2025 07:19

I like some m&s food but come the fuck on its never the value for money offering 😂 they'd probably be horrified at the thought.

mumaofababe · 06/06/2025 07:22

I surprised so many sniff at the idea of car finance.. like you say yourself, a car is a depreciating asset.

I know plenty of wealthy people who’d never buy a new car outright, but lease it or put it on finance and invest the lump sum in the stock market or property instead. As that money will grow and make them richer while they sleep.

check out rich dad poor dad. It’s all about investing money to make more money.

I agree that car finance isn’t a good idea if you don’t have any money though. But it you have the money anyway, it’s a better idea to invest it, rather than throw it all into a depreciating asset.

I don’t think a Dior or Chanel handbag scream ‘ I’m broke’ they cost over 5k… no one who’s actually broke could afford it. I think a nice handbag, a classic like Dior or Chanel, makes any outfit look better. I don’t have them myself, but they’re lovely and I wouldn’t think someone who had one is broke.

DearDorrie · 06/06/2025 07:23

This thread makes me picture OP as a modern day Hyacinth Bouquet /Bucket living in a terraced house with a flash car with personalised number plate parked a few steps down the street shopping at Aldi, armed with her Waitrose bags and her teenager in tow wearing just the right side of dirty AF1 and NF puffer, both looking smug knowing they've made it.

Is it sneering, or talking? Besides, not all poor people live in poverty. I’ve interpreted it more as people trying to look as if they have more money than they do!

Real poverty can be hidden (especially when rural) but they don’t tend to have range rovers.
