To think council housing is really unfair??

Helpmechooseausername · 05/06/2025 18:12

I totally get that some people need to be housed by the council, but AIBU to think that the system is abused - but it seems to be his the system works?

I know of two families who have lived in their council houses for years and raised their children there. They needed help when they first moved in, and so were quite fairly given council houses. But, now the kids have grown up and moved on. The parents both have got jobs, nice cars, holidays, go out for meals, etc., etc.. They can continue living in their council houses for the rest of their lives.

It seems massively unfair. Is it really not means tested?? Surely the houses should be given to other people who need them? How can it be right that they aren't told to move back into the private property market?

I feel a bit like when I stand in a queue in a shop, waiting to pay, while people come in and just take what they want without paying or queuing!!

And yes, I'll admit that I'm jealous! I can't afford to do any nice things for my kids and I, despite working hard, and it seems to be because I chose to own my own home and get a mortgage instead of getting a council house!

I’ll be honest pretty much most of my friend’s parents and my parents did just that.

We did downsize when youngest was 16. As for our old house it's now an Airbnb so hasn't provided a home for anyone.

I remember commenting on there that at least the housing associations now know not to bother with installing charging points

I can now hear the brains of SH haters who are also eco warriors short circuiting

It isn't. Just because you say so doesn't make it true.

This is why these threads just expose ignorant folks who don't have a clue what they're taking about. They always come out with the same shit.

The thread was bait anyway.

I agree. It was a goady baity thread. Was bound to cause ructions!

Haha, so true.
"You should not be in SH if you can afford an electric car".... they see electric car charging points in SH... brains explode.
Maybe we could harness the energy they expand having to think about these things and save the planet 😂

Excellent. Then you won't mind it being a requirement that you sell when its too big for your needs then? Since you're all doing it out of the kindness of your heart.

Tee hee. 😆

But they are providing for themselves? Council housing isn’t free housing, it’s cheap because the council have owned these properties outright for a long time. There’s no reason for it to cost more than it costs.

Yeah my council house was built in the 60s, the rent paid will have covered the building cost many years ago! Much if my town is council housing built in the 40s-50s. The council / tax payers aren’t subsidising us!

Have you seen the posts about how Brits are unwilling to do live away from home fruit picking jobs.
a, because some MN busybody will report their SH home as abandoned
b. Tenants arent actually allowed to live away for the time these jobs demand anyway.
c. but that doesnt stop the SH haters slagging them off for not doing these jobs.

I missed them! Good grief. SH tenants just can't do right for doing wrong can they?!

Did you see the thread on here about council estates having lots of new cars there?
Nevermind that some will be leased, or from PIP. It was "you can afford a new car, you can afford to rent a private place".

Daft isn't it?! 🙄

I live in a street full of Victorian terraces. Some are council. I am pretty sure that after 140 or so years later, they are paid off

Yeah Funnily enough its the ONLY reason SH haters want tenants to break their tenancy agreement. I wonder why 🙄

The problem is if you make council housing dependent on being reviewed every few years for eligibility no one will ever want to invest in their home, their community or their neighbours as they could be chucked out at any point. And it’s not like the private rental market has a lot to offer either. RTB has been the biggest issue with council housing depleting the stock and not allowing councils to use the money to replace lost properties.

Yeah, good points. ^

Totally agree. We know a couple, both 50, on 75k a year between them in a council house since they were late teens. She can afford her botox though. Fair enough when they were younger but not at 50 with older kids. They're spongers. They should private rent or should have saved for a mortgage. Those houses should go to the people who genuinely need them.

How can they be "spongers" if they pay the rent?
Are you jealous?

Hellofreshh · 06/06/2025 20:57

Comparison is the theif of joy OP! The trouble is with the way you have summarised council housing properties is. You've speculated what you "think" you know about other people's personal lives. It's also not a general view it's just your own personal assumptions of others finances!.

Do you actually know how much it costs to rent a private house??
