To think council housing is really unfair??

Helpmechooseausername · 05/06/2025 18:12

I totally get that some people need to be housed by the council, but AIBU to think that the system is abused - but it seems to be his the system works?

I know of two families who have lived in their council houses for years and raised their children there. They needed help when they first moved in, and so were quite fairly given council houses. But, now the kids have grown up and moved on. The parents both have got jobs, nice cars, holidays, go out for meals, etc., etc.. They can continue living in their council houses for the rest of their lives.

It seems massively unfair. Is it really not means tested?? Surely the houses should be given to other people who need them? How can it be right that they aren't told to move back into the private property market?

I feel a bit like when I stand in a queue in a shop, waiting to pay, while people come in and just take what they want without paying or queuing!!

And yes, I'll admit that I'm jealous! I can't afford to do any nice things for my kids and I, despite working hard, and it seems to be because I chose to own my own home and get a mortgage instead of getting a council house!

All you snobs so concerned that “Rich” council tenants are taking up all the homes…I hope you’re not taking up poor people’s doctors appointments and places on NHS waiting lists

😂😂 that's a whole different discussion!

Yes, sell the caravan and then they will be able to buy a house. Like all those silly young people who keep buying coffee and avocado

😂 💰🤑🤑

FYI, one of my neighbours has a caravan, (they are homeowners/mortgage owners though, so it's 'allowed!' 😆) Their caravan cost £7,000. (In 2023.)

Yeah that will be a massive deposit on a house. (A bloody Wendy house!) OR it could pay 4 or 5 months private let rent. YAYYYYYYY! 👏

XenoBitch · 06/06/2025 19:54

No, the rent is not reduced. It is just that private landlords inflate their rent. Their prices are not normal, and should not be considered so.

My parents have been in council housing for 45+ years and they don't own anything. Their rent still goes up too.

Edited

That’s rubbish I’m afraid. They’re market prices and many landlords are exiting the market because it is impossible for them to even cover costs at current rates.

Sorry, is there something wrong about living in a council house?

If everyone aspired for a good salary there’d be no nurses, teachers, carers etc etc

Yeah and that poster would be the first to moan if there were no care workers available so she would have to take time off from the high flying career and care for her elderly relative herself

Notright77 · 06/06/2025 20:18

This comment just gives, looking down on others to elevate yourself! Typical of this country atm - moaning at and blaming all the wrong people for our shortcomings. I have a much bigger problem paying for MPs “second” homes than people who are living in council houses and going on holiday. Serfdom is back in fashion 🤣🤣

Right so the house I live in was built in the 60 s how long do you think it takes to pay off the building costs .?

A tenant isn’t paying off building costs. It’s not their asset. They are leasing it.

Upfront costs of building are now also much higher. That upfront investment has to be made by other people to expand stock. There are opportunity costs and risks to any investment, and the public who will be funding these assets should have the choice to decide how best to allocate them for maximum social and economic benefit.

Council houses are not given free. People pay rent to live there, in the exact same way they would in the private sector.
the only difference is that the rent may be a little more affordable than private lets. But to be honest I’m not even sure if that’s the case any more.
i know a couple who live in a two bedroom bungalow. They pay rent of £106. Pw. not much cheaper than if they rented privately in this area.
council housing lists are open to anyone who wants a house. How quickly they get a house depends on the area and their needs.
working families, families on benifits, single parents, disabled. there is no discrimination, and everyone is free to join the waiting list.
whether or not people have jobs,go on holidays. Or Their Children grown up. It’s is all irrelevant.
they pay their rent.they keep their home.
council housing posts always bring out the best in people. And here’s a thought , not everyone wants to own their home. Some people prefer to rent. A council house gives them security that they wouldn’t have in the private sector .

but what rankles even more, is that when you get old and infirm you'll be expected to sell the house for your care fees.........meanwhile folks who've lived in a council house and used their money to enjoy themselves, and never saved will get free care.....

And??? I live in a SH one bedroom flat Im childfree by choice. So they can use what ive saved in maternity care , Child Benefit etc

Tell me you're jealous of people living in social housing, without telling me you're jealous of people living in social housing. 👀

Well neither is someone who gets a mortgage to buy a house as as the house is already built
But my point was the house I live in was built over 50 years ago the building costs have long since been paid off yes the housing association has to maintain the properties ( badly ime) but they will still be making a profit.

Did you see the thread on here about council estates having lots of new cars there?
Nevermind that some will be leased, or from PIP. It was "you can afford a new car, you can afford to rent a private place".

I remember commenting on there that at least the housing associations now know not to bother with installing charging points

My friend lives in a three bedroomed council house alone after the death of their parents - they have asked to be moved to a one bedroomed property and the council are not interested! Our area is desperate for three bedroomed homes and yet nothing is done to help people to downsize so a family can be housed?

Do you mean the building costs, the land costs, the salaries of the HA staff and the maintenance costs? Together with the interest on the loans which were taken out to build the homes

ERthree · 06/06/2025 20:31

pollymere · 06/06/2025 19:16

I think this is an issue with all forms of Social Housing. You are given a home at a reduced rent and Universal Credit and encouraged to look for work or study. You are supported as you should be when you most need it.

But there seems to those who go out and earn huge sums but no one questions the reduced rent and the brand new bathroom going in, paid for by the HA or Council. There are also those who could seek work but don't need to. They can choose to work as few hours as they like with Universal Credit providing the top up.

Didn't realise that everyone that lives in a council house was on UC.

JenniferBooth · 06/06/2025 20:33

There have been quite a few threads like this lately. Labour putting the feelers out? See how popular what isin the OP would be as policy?!!

gamerchick · 06/06/2025 20:35

hellhavenofury35 · 06/06/2025 19:41

Social housing is a benefit and should treated as such. Someone has to work to fund the housing that is given.

It isn't. Just because you say so doesn't make it true.

This is why these threads just expose ignorant folks who don't have a clue what they're taking about. They always come out with the same shit.

The thread was bait anyway.

JenniferBooth · 06/06/2025 20:36

@pollymere Wish you were living in the flat underneath me. The one my 1980s bath might be leaking in to.

Many decades ago the LA where i grew up asked it's old folk in 2/3/4 beds to move into the nice new flats the LA had built, the old folks that agreed were given a flat with good quality carpets and curtains that they got to choose and their removals paid. It freed up so many homes for families. It was a great idea, all the old folk were in the same area and many new friendships were formed.

But a huge amount of people do downsize! It is exceedingly common.i even bought my house off a lady who was down-sizing

Excellent. Then you won't mind it being a requirement that you sell when its too big for your needs then? Since you're all doing it out of the kindness of your heart.
