To think council housing is really unfair??

Helpmechooseausername · 05/06/2025 18:12

I totally get that some people need to be housed by the council, but AIBU to think that the system is abused - but it seems to be his the system works?

I know of two families who have lived in their council houses for years and raised their children there. They needed help when they first moved in, and so were quite fairly given council houses. But, now the kids have grown up and moved on. The parents both have got jobs, nice cars, holidays, go out for meals, etc., etc.. They can continue living in their council houses for the rest of their lives.

It seems massively unfair. Is it really not means tested?? Surely the houses should be given to other people who need them? How can it be right that they aren't told to move back into the private property market?

I feel a bit like when I stand in a queue in a shop, waiting to pay, while people come in and just take what they want without paying or queuing!!

And yes, I'll admit that I'm jealous! I can't afford to do any nice things for my kids and I, despite working hard, and it seems to be because I chose to own my own home and get a mortgage instead of getting a council house!

All you snobs so concerned that “Rich” council tenants are taking up all the homes…I hope you’re not taking up poor people’s doctors appointments and places on NHS waiting lists

Ah, or dentists. People who could easily afford private taking up an NHS space.

Council housing should be for when you are in need of housing. Once you earn enough to pay private rent then you should move on and allow the accommodation to go to the next person that needs it. Benefit system makes people dependent not designed to give people a helping hand and then off you go on your own when your situation has improved.

Well thst not going to incentivise to do better at work is it ?
Oh goody i have just had a pay rise ,so now I get to move out of my secure housing, into private renting and be at the mercy of landlords who csn just sell up whenever they want 🤔

Social housing is a benefit and should treated as such. Someone has to work to fund the housing that is given.

😂you are funny

That's the problem with this country everyone expects to have it easy. Get it all but doesn't then allow the next person anything. Life is to easy.

That will be the occupants than

If they could pay for what the asset costs they’d have bought one, presumably, not be renting it, so quite clearly what you’ve said is not the case because the payment is reduced well below market rate for rent/ mortgage.

No, the rent is not reduced. It is just that private landlords inflate their rent. Their prices are not normal, and should not be considered so.

My parents have been in council housing for 45+ years and they don't own anything. Their rent still goes up too.

The Elephant and Castle neighbourhood is being physically, socially and ethnically transformed. This started with the demolition of the Heygate estate, a classic for stigmatised perceptions of council housing and the people who live in it. As the local 35% Campaign has meticulously documented, a succession of promises to Heygate residents were broken to arrive at a situation where 1,214 council homes were demolished, to be replaced with 2,704 new homes, of which only 82 (3%) are for social rent. The HA partner was London and Quadrant. To be eligible for the cheapest one-bedroom home built by them on the Heygate site, people needed a minimum household income of £57,500. The average household income in that part of Southwark is £24,324

Do the maths @Helpmechooseausername 1,214 social homes replaced with 82 social homes. Why arent you crticising the developers? Why are you punching down instead of up? Very tellling!!!!

Right so the house I live in was built in the 60 s how long do you think it takes to pay off the building costs .?

I reckon the housing provider has been making a profit on that since about 1985.

Absolutely agree OP. I know people who went from private rent to council as had partners child staying, needing another bedroom. That child then moved out .They are still there.Good jobs.Have now got a caravan to visit& go on several holidays .They are abusing system, they could afford private rent letting someone else live there.

Owning a caravan and going on holiday is not an abuse of having a council house.

Zov · 06/06/2025 20:01

Zebedee999 · 06/06/2025 19:40

OP pointed out both parents work and are now doing well but still occupying a cheap council house.

Let better off parents rent in the PRS and give cheaper council housing to those less well off. Seems reasonable to me. Council housing shouldn't be permanent regardless of changing circumstances.

Oh for goodness sake! 🙄 And where should this now 'financially better off' family go? Oh I KNOW, into private let accomodation that is £800 a month MORE.

Won't be quite so well off then will they?

So laughably pointless and nonsensical to throw people out of their affordable secure housing association home - because they're on a couple of hundred pounds more a month than they were when they got the property! All that will happen if a threshold is introduced is that people will make sure they stay below it! It will be literally a race to the bottom, people will earn less, people will spend less, people will claim more benefits.

The people suggesting this are so narrow minded and blinkered, and plain ignorant, and are thinking about naff-all, other than getting anyone who's earning fifty quid a week more now OUT OF THAT SOCIAL HOUSING PROPERTY! I mean just how DARE someone earn a bit more money, and still stay in that social housing home. That 'public asset!' 😂

Oh, and some of these 'tenants' even have a holiday every year, and ...GASP ... one of them owns a caravan. SHOCKING!!!! 😱They must be billionaires! I bet they buy new clothes for their children now and again too, and even go out for a meal occasionally. Have them arrested NOW!!!! Especially as the 'public asset' they are occupying is FREEEEEEEEEE! 😂

Funny how all the haters always know someone (in social housing) who is on 'loads of money' now, and 'doing well,' and know exactly everything they own, and everything they buy... They always know how much they earn, and all about their outgoings and income inside out! They love to judge them and berate them, whilst demanding they give up their tenancy now to someone 'more deserving!'

LOL, would the haters leave a secure lifetime tenancy with affordable rent? NO. You would not! Don't even pretend you would.

The bitterness and jealousy dripping from some of the posts on here is shocking!

Lockdownsceptic · 06/06/2025 20:02

There is a huge problem with housing in this country. Only highlighting one part of it as the OP.does doesn’t give the whole picture.

There are not enough council houses.
There are not enough houses
We have too many people to house in the limited number of houses we have.
Noone wants new housing estates built near them.
Planning laws are a mess and take far too much time to plough through for anyone wanting to build.
Excessive stamp duty stops people moving including those who want to down size.
Instead of working with landlords to provide a coordinated provision councils are often at odds with landlords to everyone’s detriment.
Three reasons that private rents are so high are: not enough supply, excessive regulation, excessive taxes on rental income.
It is all an almost insurmountable problem that no government has been prepared to tackle since the 1980s.

Not only that, but the private rental market is awful right now too. About 30 interested people per property. It took my DP months after his sec21 ended to find a place, and he only got it because the person who originally wanted it changed their mind.

Have you seen the posts about how Brits are unwilling to do live away from home fruit picking jobs.
a, because some MN busybody will report their SH home as abandoned
b. Tenants arent actually allowed to live away for the time these jobs demand anyway.
c. but that doesnt stop the SH haters slagging them off for not doing these jobs.

Did you see the thread on here about council estates having lots of new cars there?
Nevermind that some will be leased, or from PIP. It was "you can afford a new car, you can afford to rent a private place".

If everyone aspired for a good salary there’d be no nurses, teachers, carers etc etc
