To ask what one extinct thing you would bring back from your childhood?

By “thing” - I don’t mean people. I’m sure there are people from our childhoods that we would all want to bring back more than any “thing” in the world.

The thing that I would bring back would be tinned Spaghetti Hoops with Hotdogs in Smokey-Bacon Sauce by Heinz.

Best thing ever in the 90s IMHO!

No mobile phones.

Eden Vale chocolate set yoghurt, absolutely sublime.

I always think of Pacers if I ever see Celtic play footie on TV. They were a good sweet!

Ooh these were lovely but they had a different name in Ireland.. which I can't now remember!

FindingMeno · 05/06/2025 18:36

I would like a proper coal bunker.
Also I'd fuck off these new computerised tills and go back to the easy old-fashioned ones.
Oh, and typewriters.

Littlewasp · 05/06/2025 18:37

Mint cracknel and potato puffs.

ScholesPanda · 05/06/2025 18:39

My pet dodo.

Also, McVities Gypsy Creams.

notanothernamechangemother · 05/06/2025 18:42

Full sugar ribena. Old salt
and vinegar Discos, that were so sharp and salty and the taste just is not the same now.
‘Secret’ chocolate bar that Cadburys did.

Woolies pick and mix. Woolies everything 😩

Edited

Oh the secret bar was elite.

id bring back ovaltine bars (showing my age). Think you can get something like them on the continent and they sold Milo bars in Asia which were similar

Spangles

Especially Old English spangles!

Aliflowers · 05/06/2025 18:47

Also lemon cornettos. Haven’t had one since my teens

FarmGirl78 · 05/06/2025 18:48

Can I say my Grandad?

ExercicenformedeZ · 05/06/2025 18:49

Food items:
Findus Crispy Pancakes in Chicken and Bacon. Golden Cup chocolate bars. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes that are just the right level of sweet rather than being like Frosties.
Shops:
Woolies, and Borders Bookshop.
Television: More of a 'what I would get rid of'. The Kardashians and Love Island.

Hazeltwig · 05/06/2025 18:51

Rajah Pickle - it was made by Heinz. Branston is a poor second.

OldSchoolCasualty · 05/06/2025 18:51

Toffos, Frosties and Wonkas Fizzy Jerks!
I was dying for a Fuse when I was pregnant and discovered they didn't make them anymore! I was devestated,
They do still make Ovaltine though, I've got some in the cupboard.

ExercicenformedeZ · 05/06/2025 18:51

Oh, and one extinct thing that I would bring back not from childhood, but from last week: the laugh react on Mumsnet. It was great and it annoyed me that it had to be got rid of.

Words · 05/06/2025 18:52

Normal weather rather than searing heat and monsoon like down pours

I've changed my mind as much as I love the ritz crackers with cheese in the middle I think I'd want to bring back the high street, all the good clothes shops we had! I used to love shopping in town in the 90s now you just have to trail round various soulless retail parks or travel to a massive indoor shopping centre.

I feel like in the 90s you could get everything you needed from the high street/town centre. Now they're just charity and vape shops, even B&M and home bargains have abandoned it for retail parks now.

I agree, I can't be bothered shopping in person any more. I do adore Vinted, though. I think it has a better selection of really good Y2k stuff than Ebay does.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/06/2025 18:53

Pluto would still be a planet if I had my way.

Andoutcomethewolves · 05/06/2025 18:53

Not sure if this counts but my dog and the chariot my dad built for her to drag me and my cousin around all the country roads (don't worry, she loved it!)

Also agree with Secret bars.

Mayflyoff · 05/06/2025 18:54

Pyramint. Unless I imagined them.

The thylacine was officially listed as extinct in 1986, so I guess that.

Also Pyramints.

If you like Ovaltine get down to Poundland 🤣 they have loads of pudding flavours like jam roly poly and they're surprisingly nice

Cabana chocolate bar and the Pipkins.

I came here to say the Cabana bar too!

Cadbury’s Animals the way they used to be in the 80s — in the animal shapes with proper ridgy thick chocolate on.

Definitely agree with proper old-fashioned chocolate — before they started chucking palm oil and so on in it and made it all horrible.
