Sophie Ellis-Bextor concert. Ugh

Saw her last week. Good fun. I missed the opportunity to wear my glittery Christmas dress though.

We all know she has legs that go on for days and likes to show them off (so would I if I had them!). At various points during the show she had to bend over (dropped something and so on). Every single time, at least one man wolf whistled. One man started and then others thought it was OK to join in.

I mean, really? They weren't sat near me or I would have said something. It pissed me right off. We were there to sing and dance to a bit of disco and grotty men insist on making their thoughts knoen about how attractive she is. As if anyone cares.

Most of the audience were 50+ which somehow made it even more grim.

Yuk just yuk.

You did that for me, thanks.

No, you don't know what I meant about Saltburn and I never once mentioned her bending down or her clothes.

Go and argue with someone else. You seem angry and I have work to do.

Clearly.

Glad you agree

NapsForAll · 05/06/2025 13:28

I mean, she quite regularly asks on stage 'who wants to take me home, boys?' and winks... and then sings her song 'take me home'. I think she's great but also, that's her whole act - being attractive and a party girl.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 05/06/2025 13:29

The comments from other women on this thread are fucking depressing. 'She knew what she was doing'. Uggh.

PinkArt · 05/06/2025 13:30

3678194b · 05/06/2025 13:26

No she clearly wants a reaction. It's a concert for goodness sake. Why are you quoting everyone, clearly have some kind of problem.

So any woman who wears short skirts, shorts etc 'wants a reaction'? Or just famous ones?
I'm amazed at the misogyny on this thread. So many ways it rephrasing she was asking for it.

That's what I meant about her being part of and earning shit loads of money from a film which was fun and sexual.

I never once said she was asking for it.

It is possible be attractive and a party girl and still not want to be leered at. The reaction a performer expects at a concert is clapping, cheering etc. If it's just accepted that men leer then it's a pretty low bar isn't it?

TulipCat · 05/06/2025 13:32

Lots of pop stars make money out of members of the opposite (and sometimes same) sex finding them attractive. Many of them play to this, it keeps their careers alive. 🤷‍♂️

IOnlyWantSexMoneyPowerAndRevenge · 05/06/2025 13:33

I have no idea if SEB was offended. Does that mean I (or the many women on here) have no right to think it's gross?

I was not offended on her behalf. She is her own woman and can decide whether she is offended or not. She doesnt need me to tell her what to be upset about. However, I can be offended on my own behalf.

My step son threw some tampons up a tree last week. His friends found it hilarious. Does that mean I have no right to think it was inane and pointless? Before anyone jumps on me, I wasnt offended or upset I just rolled my eyes and got the ladder out for them to retrieve them. I simply used that example because its something that very few people other than young teenage boys would find funny.

She sang that but I didnt see her do anything like that.

I find her very attractive and I'm a straight woman. I would never wolf whistle at her.

Note how you wolf whistle 'at' someone. You clap for them, you cheer for them.

Again I think it comes back to how different people view wolf whistling and how aggressive it appears to them.

Lanzarotelady · 05/06/2025 09:42

She can wear exactly what she wants, but she was also fully aware of the fact that wearing a very short skirt and bending over would illicit the exact reaction she was looking for and encouraging!

A successful beautiful rich woman was looking for an intimidating reaction from mediocre men who enjoy sexually harass women?

Make it make sense.

EstherGreenwood63 · 05/06/2025 13:38

These kind of threads are great for bringing the crawlie incels out of their polyester-clad lairs... 😂

Solaire18381 · 05/06/2025 13:41

Title says it all. Yes, I think going to a Sophie Ellis-Bextor concern would be Ugh. Who in their right mind would go to one.

RobertaFirmino · 05/06/2025 13:41

I am absolutely AGHAST!

Does Ms. Ellis-Bextor not know that the safest way to bend is from the knee? Ooh, she's just storing up trouble for herself in later life, mark my words. She'll be a martyr to her back, just like our Elsie.

Meh, if I was a pop star I would have been fine with my song being used in Saltburn, but I still don’t like wolf whistling. I know that some women don’t mind, but as it’s difficult for men to distinguish between women who like it/aren’t bothered and those who hate it, it’s maybe better for them not to do it?

ThatKeenAmberLeader · 05/06/2025 13:44

I don't believe in minimizing sexual harassment ever, so please don't think I am.

But I genuinely can't think of any heterosexual men who'd go to a Sophie Ellis Bexter gig. Especially not the wolf whistling builder types.

Of those men dragged by their partners, I can't imagine them wolf whistling in front of them... Which leads me to wonder if it was actually gay men, cheering and not an actual attempt at sexual harassment?. It just seems far more likely the demographic.

As SEB came to prominence with Spiller in 2000, is it really surprising her fans are middle aged. If she had been offended I'm sure she could have done something about it. OP, if you are offended then that is on you and nobody else.

I have no idea why the audience were mainly 50+ but they were. Most were actually a lot, lot older. My mum wouldn't have been out of place. That's not a bad thing at all obviously, Im just replying to your comment.

I have never once said anything about her being offended. I wouldn't have a clue if she was. I said it was gross and unnecessary. And the men were doing it so actually its on them and their behaviour, not me.

SalfordQuays · 05/06/2025 13:45

I think wolf whistling is sleazy but I don’t think it’s sexual harassment in this context.

If I’m walking down the street going about my business in a short skirt and high heels, then being whistled at is harassment. But if I’m dancing around on a stage, singing and gyrating my body, and bending over unnecessarily , then I’m clearly trying to be sexy. Cheering, whooping and whistling would be expected in that setting.

Meandmyguy · 05/06/2025 13:51

She usually performs with her knickers on show.

She knows exactly what she is doing.

FranticFrankie · 05/06/2025 13:52

I'm not a fan of SEB (i dont think shes a singer or dancer) and am amazed how she has stayed current but I've got to admire her tenacity!
But yes sleazy men will always be sleazy men

Solaire18381 · 05/06/2025 13:56

What's wrong with the audience being 50 plus? She's in her late 40's and I didn't realise she had current songs TBH, I can only think of when she was part of Groovejet or whatever, 25 years ago, in the early 00's so therefore her audience would likely be "middle age" plus.

I think the OP was saying that at the age they should know better than to do that, rather than surprised that it was 50+.

Nothing.

I think i's find it odd if they went to seen teenage girls but a grown women? I have no opinion of they are respectful.

Her current album is called Perimenopop which I can't decide is funny or a bit naff. She did do a little speech about the menopause which was quite good I think.

ThatKeenAmberLeader · 05/06/2025 14:06

I want to do the kind of perimenopause that means I look good in a mini skirt and can dance in heels for hours.
