To drive with no insurance

Alwaystired101 · 01/06/2025 23:29

Unable to afford car insurance, I've tried to get an extension told no. No family or friends no access to credit etc
I've spent around 6 hours on phone trying to sort out uc payments and I've sent in evidence of my mums death certificate that the money I had from her accounts when deceased went straight to funeral home and how I still owe money on it etc.
I have school run to do we live far away so walking not option and I have bowel issues.
No money for taxi etc so I've informed school and told that it's failure.to provide education will be reported to social if i.do not take To school.
I suffer with anxiety and the thought of breaking the law makes.me.sick and also the thought of being reported to social also makes.me.sick.

Of course you can't, it's illegal

CaptainFuture · 01/06/2025 23:30

If you live far away are you not eligible for transport?

flowerpink · 01/06/2025 23:32

Not sure what the answer is here but driving without insurance definitely isn't it

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 01/06/2025 23:32

Do not drive uninsured.

Nothing much will happen with ssd if they carry out their threat.

All you iace to do is tell them the story of why you cant

Avatartar · 01/06/2025 23:33

No way! You cannot break the law and drive without insurance- I can’t really believe you had to ask/ are considering it. Apart from it being illegal you are putting yourself and others at financial risk

Azandme · 01/06/2025 23:34

You absolutely CANNOT drive without insurance. It's illegal, and, if you have any form of accident, however minor, you'll be in waaay more shit than you're in now.

Redglitter · 01/06/2025 23:35

How much more stressful will you find it if youre involved in an accident or when the police stop you for having no insurance, charge you & impound your car.

Then you'll have a fine to pay and a bill to get your car back. A bill which increases every night your car is impounded

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 01/06/2025 23:35

Op, I dont understand why you can't afford insurance? You can pay it monthly? have you never been insured, or has it run out or...?

Sorry for your loss x

TicTac80 · 01/06/2025 23:38

Please don't drive without insurance. You sound like you're at the end of your tether but this will make things far worse for you. Are you on a school WhatsApp group where you can put a message out and ask for help with school run? How far is the school from you? If you have bikes, is it possible to cycle it?

If school reports you to SS, just explain things as you have done here.

ninjahamster · 01/06/2025 23:39

Is there a closer school you can move your children to?

Driving without insurance is a no go, it’s incredibly risky.

TimeForTeaAndG · 01/06/2025 23:40

Do you have no other parents' phone numbers that you could message and ask if they could possibly pick up DC for a few days for school while you sort things out? I'm sure if they knew you were dealing with a bereavement they would help. If you don't want to reveal financial struggle then a white lie about the car being broken eh brakes or something that isn't an overnight fix.

QueenMummyTheFirst · 01/06/2025 23:40

Please don't do this. I accidentally drove without insurance as I thought it had renewed automatically. We were stopped by the police after 2 days of it lapsing, our car was impounded and we were fined. It cost us 100s of pounds to sort it all out, and a huge amount of stress. I'm so sorry that you're struggling so much. Is there a class whatsapp group or something where you could ask other parents for help with lifts to school?

Pompompurin1 · 01/06/2025 23:41

You may be eligible for school bus?

how can you afford petrol/diesel?

definitely do not drive without insurance !!!!!!

HeddaGarbled · 01/06/2025 23:42

You sound like you could do with a bit of support from Social Services. They’re not the bogeyman, honestly. They could help you.

TwoBlueFish · 01/06/2025 23:42

It sounds like the issue is that your UC has been suspended due to money from your mums account going into yours after her death. If you are in severe financial hardship then they should fast track the investigation, you can also contact your MP and ask them to support your case. Contact school in the morning and explain that you have no way of getting the kids to school, if you’re more than a certain number of miles away then they have a duty to provide transport.

Please don’t drive without insurance. Have you looked at the cost for just 3rd party fire and theft? Usually much cheaper than fully comp.

Stripeyanddotty · 01/06/2025 23:43

Can you pay monthly?

HeyWiggle · 01/06/2025 23:44

It’s just school! They are going to pressurise attendance but do not jump into line, claim your child is sick to buy a couple of days if necessary or contact the LA and ask if there’s anyway to resolve the issue. You absolutely cannot drive illegally on the road. The consequences of an uninsured accident are incredibly serious, much worse then a slap on the wrists for school non attendance.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 01/06/2025 23:44

I'm so sorry for everything you are going through but it's like asking if it's ok to rob a bank because you lost your job and can't afford your rent/mortgage - you are just adding more problems to existing problems.

Overthebow · 01/06/2025 23:44

No you can’t drive without insurance. Is there any public transport you can use? In the long term maybe you can look at living closer to the school or moving schools?

PaulKnickerless · 01/06/2025 23:46

What @TwoBlueFish said.

Please google for the phone number of Citizens Advice for your local area. It is usually freephone and their services are free. They will help you sort out the UC claim.

Emelene · 01/06/2025 23:46

I’m sorry you’re in this situation. Can you look at temporary insurance, for a week at a time say until your UC comes through? I know it’s likely more expensive overall but it may get you out of a fix.

Blackdow · 01/06/2025 23:51

Today is Sunday, how did you inform the school and get told that they would call social services? Did this all happen during the week?

JoyfulSpring · 01/06/2025 23:54

@emelene she has no money to pay for car insurance, it's not that she can't get insured. I imagine she can't pay the monthly payment due to the mix up with her UC.

Sorry you're going through this OP, definitely say the kids are sick or see if another parent can drop them.

Zov · 01/06/2025 23:55

Of course YABU. I'm sorry for your troubles, but don't drive without insurance!
