To drive with no insurance

Alwaystired101 · 01/06/2025 23:29

Unable to afford car insurance, I've tried to get an extension told no. No family or friends no access to credit etc
I've spent around 6 hours on phone trying to sort out uc payments and I've sent in evidence of my mums death certificate that the money I had from her accounts when deceased went straight to funeral home and how I still owe money on it etc.
I have school run to do we live far away so walking not option and I have bowel issues.
No money for taxi etc so I've informed school and told that it's failure.to provide education will be reported to social if i.do not take To school.
I suffer with anxiety and the thought of breaking the law makes.me.sick and also the thought of being reported to social also makes.me.sick.

Hope things get better for you really soon OP 🙏💕
You sound like a lovely person, I'm sorry your kids school wasn't more helpful or compassionate.

Blanknotebook · 02/06/2025 12:56

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation, but please don’t drive without insurance. Speak to the school again and explain your problems. Offer to have work sent to your home so that the children are not missing out on their education. You could contact a social worker and see if there are any other benefits that you would be eligible to receive .I hope that you find a resolution soon.

Ilovemyshed · 02/06/2025 12:57

Do not drive.

If the school do report then maybe you will get some support from social services when they see the circumstances that tou are in. It doesn’t have to be negative.

ukathleticscoach · 02/06/2025 12:58

'I have school run to do we live far away so walking not option'

How far away in miles?

Have you gone on comparison site and checked for monthly payments?

Could you get public transport or get kids to get a lift with someone else. Have you had an insurance quote for 3rd party fire and theft

NinaFinch · 02/06/2025 12:51

I haven't used Tempcover @KT1113 but if the OP's car is taxed, she will need insurance all the time and not just daily/ weekly - car tax guide from Go Compare

Good guide - some stuff I didn't know.

ukathleticscoach · 02/06/2025 13:02

'School is a 50 min round trip driving'

Find a closer school that it ridiculous

Theroadt · 02/06/2025 13:02

To even contemplate driving uninsured is awful, let alone do it. Insurance is not a frivolous “add on”, it protects someone you bash into and render disabled - (for example) by paying out for their care.

I havent nor would I take money i haven't even asked.... tbh last night I was feeling really shit and I literally had no one to talk to. I just posted for one reason and that was to have communication with other adults about how shit things can get sometimes.
I've had a few people say about how I'm not thinking of my kids etc which just so you know is horrible to say
All I wanted was sort of a hand hold from strangers to say there there chin up which is. What I thought it was.about on here.
How many of you sometimes get quite a few things happen and you go to your friend sister mother etc for nothing other than for them to say don't worry things will only get better.
I made it clear i was just feeling down as I couldn't get to school unless I drove with no insurance (which I wouldn't do) and I was upset over being told its neglect. (Which is hurtful for any mum to hear)
I'll request that this thread is deleted now so people don't get wrong idea.

I am sorry you have all these problems. The school is out of order - tell them so and raise a complaint with the governors. Email your MP and explain the problem and that you are having trouble with UC because your mum's estate went into your bank account but has now been used to pay for her funeral (presume you can prove this) - mistake to have it paid into your bank account btw, but water under the bridge solves no smashed eggs. If SS are involved they can probably help you, maybe get the school transfer done quicker, help you sort out UC etc.
Hand hold.

Same! Thanks for this. I suppose you could keep declaring it sorn if you really cant afford to keep it on the road? But a massive faff and not ideal I know, just trying to think of something short term to keep you going x

MellowPinkDeer · 02/06/2025 13:04

How absolutely ridiculous. Of course you can’t. You are completely unreasonable not to mention INCREDIBLY self obsessed to even consider it!

NewsdeskJC · 02/06/2025 13:06

Try Acorn insurance. They do a 30 day subscription product.

PiggyPigalle · 02/06/2025 13:09

hareclive · 02/06/2025 12:41

no one reads the list of people in court on driving offences, surely, what is the point in that?!

They print details of speeding too.
I wrote a public letter of complaint, I said they're no better than curtain twitchers and it's not in the public interest to report speeding.
Well, talk about a pile on. No one agreed with me, which shows they are read.

Even worse, they not only print the offender's name, but their street too.
Because they're heard in open court, they consider them fair game.
I agree with you on who would want to read it? Small town gossips I imagine.

FuckityFux · 02/06/2025 13:10

OP are you ok?

Try not to worry about school. There’s not a lot they can do and they sound like shitty staff to be threatening you, especially after your recent bereavement and when there’s only a few weeks left.

Can you ring Citizens Advice or similar and ask for help?

Orderofthephoenixparody · 02/06/2025 13:15

Contact the council and ask to be put through to the education department. They should be able to help with transport and if not turn to your local MP. That's what a friend of mine had to do to get free travel for her children to go to school by taxi.

NewsdeskJC · 02/06/2025 13:16

Try acorn insurance. They do a subscription product which fits your circumstances.

Hi I'm not driving a people carrier, or a fancy car I have a almost 20 year old corsa 1.2 engine.
The school was within 5 mins of where I used to live, I moved home after husband died as I needed to reduce rent cost.
I didn't move schools as I worked right next to school and my mum also lived right by there so there was no point disrupting school when I was there anyway, then with my mum sick I would be there anyway.
I am on a waiting list for a nearer school for the kids which I sorted around 2 months ago.

How much if your insurance? My car is 17 years old and the same engine and insurance is £340 per year for fully comp and including breakdown cover and national recovery.

Don't let a couple of wankers make you feel awful - the vast majority of posts have been supportive and informative.

If you're referring to me as one of the "wankers" you mentioned, re-read my post. I was criticising the poster who suggested sending money. Not because of OP, but because it encourages scamming from lurkers.

In fact I didn't see your remark as I was busy making suggestions for the OP.
Not something I'd do if I thought a poster was on the make.

Oh and before referring to a couple of "wankers", have the the guts to name them as well.

basketballcricketball · 02/06/2025 13:31

If you have applied but the council can't offer you a closer school then you should be eligible for school transport which would either be a taxi or a school bus. Have you looked into this?

heffalumpwoozle · 02/06/2025 13:39

You need to speak to the school about transport solutions.

The local authority are legally obliged to give your children an education.

If you get benefits/ if the kids are eligible for free school meals, then you will be able to get transport.

Don't drive without insurance.

PiggyPigalle · 02/06/2025 13:40

I can't tell from the information given from OP, whether she's simply short this month, or whether she can't afford £70 pm, for the foreseeable future.

PiggyPigalle · 02/06/2025 13:42

Locutus2000 · 02/06/2025 13:31

I have no idea who you are, sorry.

Ah, I see you've got the message, loud and clear. Good!

NorthQueef · 02/06/2025 14:02

The school has zero to do with transport, its the local authority. There will be contact details on your local authority website. The transport team is seperate from the SEN transport team, You can apply for school transport under special circumstances, it will be discretionary and you may have to pay if offered. Explain your circumstances OP they can only say yes or no.

Also OP the legal obligation to get your children to and from school lies with the parent, sadly there is very little support for chronically ill/disabled parents.

SilenceInside · 02/06/2025 14:05

@PiggyPigalle the Op seems to have had her Universal Credit payments stopped due to an inheritance payment from her Mum's estate being paid to her, even though it was immediately used to pay funeral expenses, for which the OP still owes some money. So she has no income, and no access to credit nor friends or family who can help her out financially short term. I would think that the car insurance is simply the next significant upcoming bill that can't be avoided, that the OP now cannot pay. Until the Universal Credit issue is resolved then she's got no ongoing income.

ClosetBasketCase · 02/06/2025 14:07

Personally I dont think you are being unreasonable. Insurance is shockily expensive - even with 20+ years of no claims. and if i didnt drive on roads with waaayyyy too many ANPR cameras, I WOULDNT pay it. However not worth the bollocking if caught.

you should be able to get transport? alothough if you are rural, i have no doubt that its probably not available, as god knows it never was for me, so i had to have lifts. and when mum had her accident and couldnt drive when i was at collage, i had to walk an hour each way to the bus stop!
