To drive with no insurance

Alwaystired101 · 01/06/2025 23:29

Unable to afford car insurance, I've tried to get an extension told no. No family or friends no access to credit etc
I've spent around 6 hours on phone trying to sort out uc payments and I've sent in evidence of my mums death certificate that the money I had from her accounts when deceased went straight to funeral home and how I still owe money on it etc.
I have school run to do we live far away so walking not option and I have bowel issues.
No money for taxi etc so I've informed school and told that it's failure.to provide education will be reported to social if i.do not take To school.
I suffer with anxiety and the thought of breaking the law makes.me.sick and also the thought of being reported to social also makes.me.sick.

Please do not drive without insurance. Can a family member or friend loan you money? If not do you have a class what’s app group to ask if anyone can help transport your DC?

TipsyRaven247 · 02/06/2025 00:02

Don't do it. It would be a huge mistake which could have terrible consequences for you and your children.
I cannot give you a solution to your dire situation, but this is certainly not it.

Viviennemary · 02/06/2025 00:07

If you get caught driving without insurance you will have a lot more problems than you have now.

Freesiasforthewin · 02/06/2025 00:12

Call the school again, and explain why the children will not be in school. They may be able to access some support for you. Do not drive the car uninsured. It is illegal and could land you in real trouble if you’re pulled over or worse still, have an accident. Do not drive the car. It is not worth the risk.

MummoMa · 02/06/2025 00:13

If you feel sick now, think how much sicker you'll feel if you end up with a fine to pay, or end up in a prang and having to pay in full for damage. Not worth it.

Willyoujustbequiet · 02/06/2025 00:17

No you can't.

If you have no family or friends to help out like you say have you thought who look after your children when you're in prison?

weirdoboelady · 02/06/2025 00:23

No, no and no.

I was caught driving without insurance - my honest belief was that I had insurance, and I'd simply forgotten actually to confirm it! Massive fine, car impounded, points on licence which took 6 years I think to expire. I avoided being arrested (I'm an elderly lady, no previous, not even any previous points for ANYTHING, law abiding etc) simply because my lovely insurance brokers spoke to the guy in the unmarked car and reassured him that yes, I was a regular customer, had been with them for about 20 years and they believed it was an honest mistake.

After recovering from the initial shock, I thanked heaven that I'd been caught. Just supposing I had injured someone. The costs could have run into hundreds of thousands. I would have been bankrupted, and all because of no insurance. Nowadays I am on the phone to my brokers urging them to send me my renewal notice, which I pay IMMEDIATELY so I can't forget again!

I think there's quite an active checking up on uninsured cars going on - it's well worth doing as the fines are so high they make masses of money from catching the uninsured. Please don't risk it!

Absolutely not! Surely this must be a fake post?

BeliesBelief · 02/06/2025 00:50

So you want to turn a temporary problem (not being able to afford insurance right now) into a permanent problem (a driving ban)?

4kids3pets · 02/06/2025 01:13

Not much of a parent even considering this. You probably will be it on your head who you may kill or injure etc but heaven forbid you hit me

RogueApple · 02/06/2025 08:07

I can't believe a parent would bo irresponsible to consider driving without insurance.

if you were in a serious accident, particularly the cause, and someone was injured or worse, you'd be looking at prison time away from your kids.

I don't know what to suggest, but driving with no insurance isn't it.

I would email the school and the education department at your council . Get it all in writing .

Nominative · 02/06/2025 08:36

How far away is the school? If it is the nearest suitable school there is a good chance your children qualify for free school transport.

MalcolmMoo · 02/06/2025 08:39

No way! What about looking at temporary insurance policies maybe Monday to Friday each week?

Summmeeerrrrisherenearly · 02/06/2025 08:40

Honestly OP I think you do need some help and support - at least from Early Help…. Sounds like it’s been a stressful time ( mum dying - health issues ) and you are contemplating driving no insurance which not only impacts on your and your children puts others at risk.

You need some help and support from somewhere, don’t be afraid to reach out

Confuuzed · 02/06/2025 08:41

I dunmo, how do you think you'll feel if you cause someone catastrophic injuries and you get someone suing you for a million quid?

Amba1998 · 02/06/2025 08:44

If you can’t afford insurance how would you afford fuel?

Do not do it.

MolluscMonday · 02/06/2025 08:48

Hello OP.

I think you’ve probably got the message by now that this is a bad idea!! So let’s think practically.

How old are your kids?

How far away is school?

How much a month would the cheapest premium be (you can use a comparison site to get several quotes quite easily)

What are the bowel issues, could anything like changing the timing of medication or breakfast help?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/06/2025 09:00

Of course you can’t. Are there nearer schools within walking distance? If so you need to look at moving your children, obviously not a short term solution but will stop this being a recurring issue.

Katemax82 · 02/06/2025 09:02

Don't fear social services, if you do get reported they can offer support. My husband and I have just finished being on a child in need thingy and honestly they are there to help

Koazy · 02/06/2025 09:02

Have you got a friend who would help temporarily?

You'll be in a hell.of a worse situation if you have an accident or get caught. Beg someone to take the dc to school
