To drive with no insurance

Alwaystired101 · 01/06/2025 23:29

Unable to afford car insurance, I've tried to get an extension told no. No family or friends no access to credit etc
I've spent around 6 hours on phone trying to sort out uc payments and I've sent in evidence of my mums death certificate that the money I had from her accounts when deceased went straight to funeral home and how I still owe money on it etc.
I have school run to do we live far away so walking not option and I have bowel issues.
No money for taxi etc so I've informed school and told that it's failure.to provide education will be reported to social if i.do not take To school.
I suffer with anxiety and the thought of breaking the law makes.me.sick and also the thought of being reported to social also makes.me.sick.

I think insurance would be one of the worst bills to neglect, simply because the legal aspects of it plus the chance of getting caught by ANPR.

There are plenty of other bills you could default on without having the legal consequences. Sure any default isn't going to be without consequence, but most places will do everything in their power to help you get an alternative payment plan.

Whereas if you get caught without insurance you will almost certainly end up in court/with a massive fine with little possibility to escape.

I don't understand why you are getting issues from your mothers bills. I would recommend you contact citizens advice and see whether they can help with some advice and recommend some support services as it clearly seems like you have had to deal with quite a combination of tough events.

For employment maybe look at some work from home options if you have issues getting out the house. Plenty of remote work options around these days.

Hi I'm not driving a people carrier, or a fancy car I have a almost 20 year old corsa 1.2 engine.
The school was within 5 mins of where I used to live, I moved home after husband died as I needed to reduce rent cost.
I didn't move schools as I worked right next to school and my mum also lived right by there so there was no point disrupting school when I was there anyway, then with my mum sick I would be there anyway.
I am on a waiting list for a nearer school for the kids which I sorted around 2 months ago.

honestly, SS are not going to give you a hard time for 'neglect' in these circumstances. let them report you. report yourself even and explain what has happened. breathe OP, you are doing grand, in difficult circumstances 💐

Notopel · 02/06/2025 12:31

You need to speak with the insurance companies or a broker - you will be able to get that price down (albeit potentially by decreasing the scope of the coverage). Definitely Price Comparator as a first stop and then call to speak with them to see if they can move on price. Think about monthly instalments (even though depending on APR you will pay more overall).
Do not drive without insurance.

Do you want everyone to come begging on here? Not every crisis in a person's life should be paid for by someone else.

In fact, anyone coming to post similar to the OP, should shut down their PMs to show they're not expecting donations.

I havent nor would I take money i haven't even asked.... tbh last night I was feeling really shit and I literally had no one to talk to. I just posted for one reason and that was to have communication with other adults about how shit things can get sometimes.
I've had a few people say about how I'm not thinking of my kids etc which just so you know is horrible to say
All I wanted was sort of a hand hold from strangers to say there there chin up which is. What I thought it was.about on here.
How many of you sometimes get quite a few things happen and you go to your friend sister mother etc for nothing other than for them to say don't worry things will only get better.
I made it clear i was just feeling down as I couldn't get to school unless I drove with no insurance (which I wouldn't do) and I was upset over being told its neglect. (Which is hurtful for any mum to hear)
I'll request that this thread is deleted now so people don't get wrong idea.

I really don't understand that quote. You must be extemely high risk to be getting those sort of numbers, which doesn't mesh with your posts.

You can also get temporary insurance for not a lot, if it's a specific trip. RAC will do an hour at a time.

Temporary Car Insurance | Short-Term Cover from 1 Hour | RAC

Borrowing a car? Sharing the driving? Taking a work trip? Temporary car insurance provides flexible and extensive short-term cover, from 1 hour to 30 days.

I came back to mention temporary insurance too 👆This might be a good stop gap

To be fair, my dad had been letting his insurance auto-renew and was paying about nearly 70 a month. We just renewed it via a comparison and it's now down to 40 including breakdown!

Don't let a couple of wankers make you feel awful - the vast majority of posts have been supportive and informative.

My local paper lists all driving offences heard in court, which would be driving without insurance.
Imagine the embarrassment for you and your children. It's one of the driving offences that most people judge as shameful.
Get on to a comparison site, sort the insurance. Even when UC is sorted you need to pay less.

Try the Tempcover app. When I first bought my new car, the insurance was much much higher than I was expecting and didnt have enough to pay for it. I used tempcover to insure it as and when I needed to drive until payday. You can cover it for anything from an hour, to a full month on there. And you get 30% off if you use the app. It's not cheap necessarily (maybe about £14 for 24 hours I think depending on your car) but if you only need it for an hour at a time, it might be ok.

Don't go OP, someone might have some good advice. Just scroll past the rest and don't give them a second thought.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/06/2025 12:39

It does sound an incredibly high premium. Not trying to be patronising but is that definitely the cheapest available?

But it sounds like you need support in the immediate term. Have you had a chance to get on to SS and see what they can do to help?

In slightly longer term, can you move to a closer school?

Don’t drive without insurance though. You’re highly likely to get caught, and there are quite high fines for this. Possibly higher than non attendance at school.

I can’t see how it’s “neglect” though - or how you could possibly be prosecuted for neglect for this.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 02/06/2025 12:40

hareclive · 02/06/2025 12:24

yes, and sometimes we need a bloody sticking plaster. she can still contact SS for support

no one would be forced to contribute. id happily donate and take the risk of being scammed. I know how stressful and defeating it is being this skint

Have you not learned from the post you've already had deleted?

Look, you said you're not giving the OP any money so why are you encouraging others to do so?

no one reads the list of people in court on driving offences, surely, what is the point in that?!

Boing98 · 02/06/2025 12:47

Just to add that it would be better for Op to cancel the insurance themselves, rather than having the insurer cancel it for non payment, as this would need to be declared to future insurance companies and will increase premiums by a lot.

WhoAreYouTalkingTo · 02/06/2025 12:48

Well, if you drive without insurance, you will lose your licence anyway so won't ever be able to drive.

GoldDuster · 02/06/2025 12:51

@hareclive a crowdfunder isn't a solution, OP needs to find a different vehicle which has a level of insurance they can afford to pay to keep a car on the road, if being without a car where they live, or moving house isn't an option.

NinaFinch · 02/06/2025 12:51

I haven't used Tempcover @KT1113 but if the OP's car is taxed, she will need insurance all the time and not just daily/ weekly - car tax guide from Go Compare

hareclive · 02/06/2025 12:53

I have just looked at the charges for the Enterprise car club. there are different options, but £7 a month then £1/hour is going to be £47 a month if you consider 20 school days and an hour's rental twice a day. might be a good short term solution....you save on not having the upkeep costs of your own vehicle too

I wasn't suggesting you're asking for money OP, I wouldn't be trying to help if I thought that.
I was having a go at the person who suggested donating. All that would do is bring lurkers on with a false sob story.

There will be a solution to tide you over. We now know it's not car size, so that's off. How long is the temporary crisis for? Have UC given you a clue?
Renting? Would they allow a month's grace?

You're probably so down about your mum and now this, you're not thinking of all angles. That's why, going to Citizens Advice may come up with a solution you'd never thought of.

Is it just this month you can't afford the £70, or ongoing.
