Why do people drive big cars they can’t manage?

HulinSings · 01/06/2025 09:51

I’ve lost count of the number of (usually women in hubby’s RR) driving big cars that they simply cannot park or simply manoeuvre.

Is this just an issue by me or does anyone else encounter this on a daily basis?

Surely the need to be seen in a ‘brand’ isn’t worth the hassle driving one of these cars must bring..Insta has a lot to answer for

I see it all the time too. Fed up waiting 10min gor them to manoeuvre the damn thing out a parking space.
You'll get abuse for saying it is mainly women on here though (but to be fair, it is)

araiwa · 01/06/2025 09:55

Gotta justify those £1000 a month PCP payments

bridgetreilly · 01/06/2025 09:56

I still don’t get why manufacturers sell cars that are too big for UK roads and car parks.

RR drivers are the worst. I live rurally and drive a SUV so can't talk really but I am willing to get mine muddy and pull over and accept it gets scratched by branches on country lanes. RR drivers never pull over and never ever reverse to a passing point.

OK I exaggerate but not much ;)

Fair enough if they are bad drivers then have a moan about them, but unless you know these people and their personal circumstances why the hell would you assume this?

Zippidydoodah · 01/06/2025 09:59

Blimey! Sexist much?

I have a big car (with parking sensors) and I am excellent at manoeuvring it.

In my experience it’s mainly the older generation who struggle with manoeuvres because they can’t see very well/find it worrying and stressful to move their cars. That’s men AND women by the way.

CatsWee · 01/06/2025 09:59

Sad to say this is a regular occurrence where I live-two 4x4s going opposite ways on a narrow street. Cars backed up for miles because neither 4x4 will back down. In reality neither driver is confident to reverse because her car is too big for her driving ability- and sadly yes almost always women. This is in London where there is absolutely no need for cars like this.

CatamaranViper · 01/06/2025 10:00

Option 1: no one is perfect at everything as soon as they try it. Maybe it's a new car and they are getting used to driving something bigger.
Option 2: maybe they have a smaller car that they usually drive but it's in the garage and they've had to borrow 'hubbys' car
Option 3: maybe they think they can manage it
Option 4: they need a large car for medical equipment and they aren't quite used to it yet (though this is similar to option 1 I suppose...)

I'm sure there are more

How are people finding it so hard to reverse a vehicle that has all round cameras and sensors?

LavenderBlue19 · 01/06/2025 10:01

I see plenty of men who can't drive them either.

They are just far too big, and silly on small UK roads. Why would you want a car you can't fit in a parking space?

They are usually on the school run and straight off for coffee mornings etc - either don’t work or are very part time.

My car is big because I have loads of kids. It’s not a Rolls Royce though.

AlorsTimeForWine · 01/06/2025 10:03

I used to think yanbu but I see new roads and new carparks being built and even if these cars are inside the lines there's no way to open the door.
They are wider than most on road parking space even when next to the curb

UK roads haven't beem designed for these cars and they aren't designing them for these cars.
There's a house with vintage cars and there's a clear foot and half between the car and the end of the parking space.

They don’t trust the sensors/cameras/get overwhelmed by all the beeping and information overload. Again a large part is women that don’t have the same (over) confidence as men.

So you are talking about a couple of the mums you know at your kids school? (Otherwise how do you know they are “usually straight off for coffee runs”?)

Sounds like you might be jealous?

Tollington · 01/06/2025 10:07

Because of my job I often get to drive large vehicles, Mercedes G Wagon, Ford Raptor, BMW X5, Range Rovers etc.

I would hate to take one to a multi story car park, a retail park or just try and park in a normal town centre. Parking spaces in this country haven’t got bigger but many vehicles have. I’ve got a normal sized estate car and even with that trying to get the door open and putting DD in her car seat can be awkward at retail parks

This is exactly my issue.I now just bloody refuse to pull over or reverse.Generally it is a male driver TBH .

Divebar2021 · 01/06/2025 10:08

@Zippidydoodah

i think in this case they mean a Range Rover.

In my marriage DH picks the cars because he’s very very interested in them and enjoys reading all the reviews and trawling through the ads. I don’t care about them so my car is something he picked. ( He would only pick a RR though if it was a Defender and we lived more rurally though. Yes I have to hear about it 😀)

Yesindeeed · 01/06/2025 10:09

First of all it’s my car not my husband’s.

Second of all two women in 4x4’s meet on a country road and 9/10 both will start to reverse, but woe betide you if you meet a man. They much prefer to ignore the passing places and squeeze past mm’s away from your car whilst glaring at you.

Thirdly, it’s often quite beautiful at my local shopping centre multi story car park watching the women all arrive in their big cars and seamlessly and competently reverse into the spaces.

I live in the countryside. The women tend to have 4x4’s, the men sports cars. Neither are necessary or practical tbh, and yes we are all aware of this, before the outraged arrive.

I don’t drive on days when I’m too ill to manage it.

WineTastingMemories · 01/06/2025 10:10

I’m a bit like this! Not a sex based issue though - my Dad was shit at reversing and parallel parking too and would avoid it whenever possible. I’ve just got very little spatial awareness I think. I’m equally shit in small cars. I do have a bigger car than I would chose as the kids are all over 6ft now and the 3 of them wouldn’t fit in the back otherwise. We live very rurally and so lots of single lane tracks and lots of reversing. I recently got a new electric car with great visibility and amazing sensors which has been amazing. All the local farmers know me 😂! I apologised to one once for holding him up when he stopped his tractor to say hello. He said it was fine. My reputation in the area (I’m an incomer!) is for being a bit slow but safe. It’s the people that race round blind bends who people round here get annoyed with.

edited to add:
my new car has buttons on the key fob which means you can start up and move the car forwards or backwards before getting in if someone parks too close to you!

Whenim63 · 01/06/2025 10:11

How horribly judgemental. “Usually in hubbys RR”?? Is it impossible she might have a RR of her own?

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/06/2025 10:11

When I first read RR, my first thought was “where do you live, Monaco?”

Thought the OP meant Rolls-Royce!! 😫 To be fair, they are pretty big.
