Why do people drive big cars they can’t manage?

I’ve lost count of the number of (usually women in hubby’s RR) driving big cars that they simply cannot park or simply manoeuvre.

Is this just an issue by me or does anyone else encounter this on a daily basis?

Surely the need to be seen in a ‘brand’ isn’t worth the hassle driving one of these cars must bring..Insta has a lot to answer for

OP posts:

It seems that there is a strong sentiment of people on this thread saying that SUVs are big.

Well yes, of course SUVs are big.

But then that gets taken further by the people like OP who are even more indignant that it might be a woman driving the SUV.

Could this kind of thinking just be a remnant of the conditioning that women shouldn’t take up space? Women should always strive to be smaller. Shouldn’t intrude. Given the choice, should choose the smallest for their needs (e.g. minivan over SUV).

The best car I ever owned was a pickup truck 😜

YABU for the "usually women in hubby’s RR" comment

Accidents caused by vehicles accelerating slowly are far outweighed by accidents caused by vehicles driving too fast for the conditions.

Where I live parking is scarce in summer when everyone and their dog wants to come and park in our picturesque harbour. Fine, so long as everyone parks IN a space; ie between the lines. The spaces are not huge so anyone over the lines reduces the number of spaces available. SUVs are not the problem, they take up almost the whole space but are usually carefully inside the lines. It’s BMWs and old small cars that straddle the lines and take up two spaces, every time. I can almost guarantee that any red fiesta parked there will “need” two spaces.

The people I see near me with the big SUVs are rarely older people but younger women driving from the school run to the gym and back again.
They always park badly (to the left of the space so they can get out but the person to the left cannot get back in when they want to leave) or hanging over the end but have to park right by the the school entrance or the gym door.

For something so blatantly self-evident, did I need to?

Plenty of non-SUVs fit three car seats. There’s really no excuse. If you want to take loads of kids, get a people carrier.

Not many cars, including SUVs, seem to be able to take three Isofix seats. Some can with the penalty of limited boot space.

Best cars for three child car seats: verdict

Fitting three child seats into a car can be a challenge, so we’ve put 15 SUVs and MPVs to the test to find out which can accommodate three seats safely and comfortably

Blimey! Sexist much?

I have a big car (with parking sensors) and I am excellent at manoeuvring it.

In my experience it’s mainly the older generation who struggle with manoeuvres because they can’t see very well/find it worrying and stressful to move their cars. That’s men AND women by the way.

I have the larger car 4x4 and can reverse it it situations where DH can't

Get lost with the sexism and assumptions

I'm also almost 60 so obviously old - must be people like me too 🙄🙄

This. Buy a car for your lifestyle and requirements not looks. People are fooled by marketing to think they need SUVs when the majority don’t need them.

My parents had 3 kids and we had a Picasso or Scenic, nothing wrong with those type of cars.

Apart from being ugly AF - we don't all like the same things!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/06/2025 10:19

Somewhat off topic, I know, but IMO the bloody enormous cars like tanks (plenty of them around here) should be charged double road tax. Not just because of the extra room they take up (parking etc.) but also the extra weight/wear and tear on our pothole-ridden roads.
My dd has 3 dcs and does need a vehicle to fit them all in, but it’s still nothing like these enormous ‘tanks’ so I don’t see that as an excuse.

People should be buying cars to match their needs, we have an estate because we transport lots of big canvas tents.

If you have lots of kids you should get the car that is capable of transporting your kids. Rather than only caring about how you look.

I drive a huge car of the Landrover variety that you dislike and it’s got a massive dent in the font because my idiot husband drove into a pillar while manoeuvring. It’s not his car and he didn’t hear the beeps apparently, so afraid men can be shit drivers too.

I find your post incredibly sexist most of the women know(rurally) can drive and manoeuvre massive horse boxes with ease, unless they hit you with their lovely expensive luxury cars then move on and stop being jealous.

This! In the last 10 years I’ve bought myself 2 new SUVS. The ONLY person to damage them? DH.

user68901 · 06/06/2025 19:06

Tbh I am a hands down a much better driver than my DH regardless of car size. When you have lived in London and had to reverse bay park into whatever space you can get makes you pretty nifty.
He is Aussie with massive roads and parking spaces - he still hasn't a clue 20 years later.

Currently constructing a new patio! 🤣🤣 The first time was a genuine accident, so fair enough. The second time, he somehow managed to drive the car out of the garage with the boot lid up??? The bloody car itself doesn’t let you drive with the boot open, it puts the handbrake on and bongs and pings like it’s demented!! So how he did it, I have no idea 🤬. I’m demanding retribution to the sum of the repair!!!
