Why do people drive big cars they can’t manage?

HulinSings · 01/06/2025 09:51

I’ve lost count of the number of (usually women in hubby’s RR) driving big cars that they simply cannot park or simply manoeuvre.

Is this just an issue by me or does anyone else encounter this on a daily basis?

Surely the need to be seen in a ‘brand’ isn’t worth the hassle driving one of these cars must bring..Insta has a lot to answer for

Oh! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 I actually googled RR! 🤣🤣

My MIL has one. She doesn’t need it as such, but she’s flashy. She can park it though.

I agree there’s a problem with tiny parking spaces and bigger cars, though. They don’t have that problem in the US!

WineTastingMemories · 01/06/2025 10:13

Even most small cars take up a full parking space now - it’s all the crumble zone protection. Saw an old fiesta the other day -really old one. Looked like a tin can!

It fits my wheelchair in

I bet you can drive yours properly, @Octavia64.

Incompetent drivers are incompetent drivers regardless of the size of their car.

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2025 10:17

Most women I know seem to be able to handle big cars, but the couple I know who I almost feel reluctant to get in their car with them driving have the particular model because their husband’s wanted it (one car families). I drove the bigger car in my household (we had two) as I had four kids to ferry around.

Feetinthegrass · 01/06/2025 10:18

’Hubby’s’ car?????
Wtaf!

Just when you think people can’t get anymore stupid.

DanAW · 01/06/2025 10:19

I’d always want my wife and child driving in a large 4x4 because I believe it’s a lot safer for them, and my wife and most women are a lot better parking than I am anyway 😂 I am the worst 🙈

crackofdoom · 01/06/2025 10:19

intrepidpanda · 01/06/2025 09:54

I see it all the time too. Fed up waiting 10min gor them to manoeuvre the damn thing out a parking space.
You'll get abuse for saying it is mainly women on here though (but to be fair, it is)

IME it's mostly men of a certain age.

Saz12 · 01/06/2025 10:24

Excessively bulky cars that just don't fit into regular parking spots are a pita! Must be so irritating to have to cruise round carparks to find a space-and-a-half.
Not being able to reverse conf8dently must also be a nightmare, ditto passing oncoming car on narrower rural roads.

I don't get why anyone would choose a bulky heavy wide car - so few people actually need that style.

Seriously no fucking need. Pp said she doesn't drive when she's not well. Nowhere did she say she couldn't park the thing.

JudgeBread · 01/06/2025 10:31

Lmao I come from a farming family and my mam fucking hates these faux-posh people (men and women) in their giant, shiny, never-seen-off-road 4x4's that they absolutely can't drive to save their lives. She'd love this thread.

Pal and I sat in a car park watching a woman trying to park one of those awful humongous pickups the other day, it took her longer than it took us to eat our lunches to get the stupid thing into a space. I felt like offering to do it for her but it was more fun to watch her struggle.

I would rather be entirely unable to park or in fact drive, than be so awfully judgemental. Your sense of superiority is obvious and unpleasant.

Why does it matter your mam is a farmer exactly?!! And why were you so interested in other people instead of each other’s company at lunch? You must be very dull to find this entertaining.

Mummabear04 · 01/06/2025 10:39

I honestly am fed up of men parking their big fuck off cars in the disabled spaces at the gym or in the kids parking at super markets. Drives me mad.

Tollington · 01/06/2025 10:07

Because of my job I often get to drive large vehicles, Mercedes G Wagon, Ford Raptor, BMW X5, Range Rovers etc.

I would hate to take one to a multi story car park, a retail park or just try and park in a normal town centre. Parking spaces in this country haven’t got bigger but many vehicles have. I’ve got a normal sized estate car and even with that trying to get the door open and putting DD in her car seat can be awkward at retail parks

Ain't that the truth. My cars in last few yrs were a Kia Picanto & a Fiat 500. Which are not as small as I'd like but as small as modern cars with > 2 seats get. I often pull into a marked parking spot & think "there's barely room to get out"... so how TF do people in a Nissan Patrol or a RAV4 or a Galaxy cope? Mind boggles.

Ooh what’s your job @Tollington , I can only think of car salesperson, but I wonder if it’s more glamour than that

SqueakyDinosaur · 01/06/2025 10:49

Little known fact: in the absence of other indications, the car going up a hill has priority over the car coming down. Obviously, if you're going uphill and there's a passing place right behind you, and the one for the downhill car is much further away, YABU if you don't reverse.

But in other circumstances I have been known to get out of my car and lean on the bonnet scrolling my phone, just to make it clear that no, I'm not reversing quarter of a mile so you don't have to reverse 50 yards.

lljkk · 01/06/2025 10:53

They don’t have that problem in the US!

They do not fit there, actually... even their cars are too damn big for many parking lots. That's why you see a lot of cars not parkd within the lines at any supermarket or Target. I borrow my dad's SUV when I'm in USA. It's not one of the big SUVs at all, but it maneuvers terribly and I find the cameras nearly useless because they don't really cover sides well enough.

it's Never an option to hire a reasonable size car using the online USA car rental menus. But One time at Fort Lauderdale when I reached the hire car parking lot, the lady working there said I could actually take out one of their truly small rental cars which was bliss (|!!). Meanwhile at the checkin desk, the rental agencies try hard to upgrade you to stupid size car and I have to scold them not to. Pisses me off so much that it's impossible to hire the type of car I like in USA.

American Cars Are Getting Too Big For Parking Spaces

The American car has gotten bigger in the past few decades but parking spot size has not kept pace. Regardless of the cause, th

Anyone who drives a Range Rover is a twat in my opinion 😂. Worlds most chavvy, soulless, box shaped cars

Hottchoc · 01/06/2025 10:55

Hey some of us are trying out best, just tag me next time 😂

Hufflemuff · 01/06/2025 10:59

Honestly, I'm not a great parker... but there's plenty of other things I'm good at that others are shit at. We all have different skill sets.

I'm actually more concerned about the people that rag their cars at 50mph in a 30 zone, or cut you up at speed on a roundabout, or tailgate you for miles because you won't increase your speed to 20mph above the speed limit to satisfy them. That is what should bother you.

Oh the cars in the USA are ridiculous. Trucks that need a step ladder to jump up into them.

My colleagues are American and they were complaining the other day about the cost of buying a new/used car out there and fuel... they just can't understand that a giant SUV is not necessary or normal!

LlynTegid · 01/06/2025 11:05

It is a bit of an arms race, apologies if I offend anyone with the analogy. People have large cars because others do, so would feel less confident if they had a normal sized car.

I think those who have singled out women as bad drivers are being unfair, of the 25% of all drivers who are unfit to hold a licence, I'd estimate the majority are men because of their conduct on the road or medical reasons. Some of the men because they feel inadequate about a body part of theirs and think women will be impressed by a larger car.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/06/2025 11:11

Have not read the whole thread. I can only really comment on London, where I live. There are far too many cars on the roads here and a ridiculously large number of them are great big vehicles designed (in theory) for offroading, which I'd bet hardly any of them ever do. They are often parked on the streets, leaving one narrow lane for all traffic to pass through, which causes congestion. No wonder the roads are permanently full of potholes. The physical weight of these cars must be causing a lot of damage. If I ruled the world they'd be heavily taxed in the hope that it would discourage people from buying them.
