Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

I watch GB News, Sky, Channel 4 News, Al Jazeera, Global - even the BBC. It's interesting, and educational to get a perspective on all aspects of political spectrum. Likewise, I read both the Guardian and the Telegraph. But I'm an ex-press officer so intrigued by how a story is played out in different media.

To be fair, if you’ve said something racist or homophobic you definitely should shut up

What a stupid comment, get a grip! I’ve not said anything racist or homophobic.

stargirl1701 · 30/05/2025 22:28

It’s necessary. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Find a reputable news source, OP. In fact, find more than one. I read The Guardian and The Times. The truth is usually in the middle of those!

Really?

I think the Guardian and reality parted company a long time ago.

I read it all too from the MailOnline,Telegraph and Times through to the BBC and Guardian and beyond to the Morning Star.

If it’s free online via their own websites or archive.ph.

@TheAutumnCrow

See my earlier statement.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 30/05/2025 23:29

I think it is rude. I don't watch it but I find a comment like that judgemental and unnecessary. Each to their own. Who really gives a s**t at the end of the day.

bombastix · 30/05/2025 23:31

Not a good idea to discuss your politics at work OP. Which is what you did. Your colleague wasn’t complementing you, but probably shouldn’t have responded like that. Stuff like this is bad for a team.

totk · 30/05/2025 23:32

KrisAkabusi · 30/05/2025 23:17

This idea that only your preferred media counts as news while everything else is “utter nonsense” is exactly the kind of echo chamber situ that’s made public debate so brittle. If someone’s watching a range of sources and thinking for themselves, they’re probably doing better than most.

But if one of the sources has been evaluated by an independent organisation like Factcheck
"Overall, we rate GB News Right Biased and Questionable based on a lack of transparency with ownership and funding, numerous failed fact checks, and the promotion of conspiracy theories and pseudoscience."

Then why should it be given any credibility and treated the same as actual, reputable news sources? Even less for all the people for who it is their only "news" sources.

Fact-checking organisations are useful, but they’re not infallible or politically neutral themselves. And many "reputable sources" have had their own share of failed fact checks, retractions and scandals.

Nobody is saying GB News should be treated as gospel, but insinuating that anyone who watches it is homophobic/ fascist/ racist etc. isn't helpful either. It’s still a platform that reflects a portion of public opinion whether people like that or not. and understanding what’s being said (and why it resonates with some) make sense.

I really do think the echo chamber issue is bad. Dismissing stuff out of hand because it comes from "the wrong side" is only going to end in trouble.

Booboomylove · 30/05/2025 23:34

It's rude and unnecessary to watch GB 'News'. You should feel flattered that your colleague didn't have you down as 'one of them', in other words your gammon personality must be well disguised at work.

HeySugarSugar · 30/05/2025 23:35

GlutesthatSalute · 30/05/2025 22:39

People don't want to watch the news. They want to watch a series of opinions that mirrors their own and reinforces their own smug perception of themselves.

GB News devotees and BBC-worshippers are just two cheeks of the same arse

Absolute bollocks.

SapphOhNo · 30/05/2025 23:39

I'd have thought it but not said it and wpuld see you in a different light.

I agree with this, and I have zero interest in politics or news. But I can't figure out why one side is allowed to publicly express their beliefs, the the other side can not. It's so strange.
All sides, and people, should be able to express their thoughts whether or not we agree. If someone says something I don't agree with, I just let it over my head. Our lives/backgrounds/experiences are different, and we will all inevitably form differing opinions and thoughts. I don't know what people get so angry and triggered.

Well it’s a big lie that you should “bring your whole self to work”.

Bring your “interested in getting work done and getting along” self

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 30/05/2025 23:55

StMarie4me · 30/05/2025 23:13

GB News radicalises people into far right, racist, misogynistic views. Your colleagues were calling you out on that. Rightly so.

I've heard some very-far-from misogynistic views on GB news clips.
For misogyny, I stick to the Guardian.

Orangemintcream · 30/05/2025 23:56

I would consider myself left wing (although the “tolerance” of the left these days makes me not want to be associated with very many other lefties).

I think that - despite the people seeming to think if you watch it you will instantly be converted to a Nazi- that it is vitally important to be aware of the news sources and political stance of other parties and the reasons for that.

I don’t agree with a most of GB news’s stance but if we want to make progress we need to be aware of other views and be able to discuss them instead of just screaming “Nazi”. Even if the source of information isn’t necessarily reliable its important to be aware of it.

We cannot continue to just go around dismissing people because their views are “wrong”. That is why people ended up with Trump.

There was a huge amount of shouting down his supporters but a poor effort in putting forward a suitable candidate to actually beat him.

bombastix · 30/05/2025 23:59

Come on it is totally unreasonable to discuss politics at work unless you are prepared to be judged for it. It is divisive. It’s also stupid because you have to work together.

Outside work fine, then everyone is a grown up and you can do as you please. Work, be neutral.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 30/05/2025 23:59

NestEmptying · 30/05/2025 22:28

Watching GB news gives away your politics. I am guessing they don't share them.
I might think something like that but would probably just judge you silently.

Or it shows you listen to a variety of news sources

Middleagedstriker · 31/05/2025 00:02

SoloCat · 30/05/2025 23:04

I would say watch what you want…the judgement is unreal…

The Guardian is surely just bought in great swathes by the BBC 🙄

Wrong place to drop a GB bomb…you must step away and conform immediately 😂

Honestly if you can't see that GM news is full of bullshit you have to be careful that you aren't susceptible to scams. I have a horrible uncle he works in the world of scams and he deliberately targets GM followers because they are easy to manipulate. I'm no guardian lover but there is a line of stupidity when it comes to believing shite.

Gustavo77 · 31/05/2025 00:04

They weren't wrong to be fair.

It's not something I've ever heard someone admit to. Having anything to do with politics like that isn't a good look.

You undoubtedly went down in people's estimation.

Gustavo77 · 31/05/2025 00:07

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:33

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

You really need to educate yourself if you think "Nigel" is anything other than an odious little opportunistic, racist, thick, mischief making, obsequious, disingenuous twallop and that's being very kind.

DontReplyIWillLie · 31/05/2025 00:38

GB News? Gobshite News, more like.

MumWifeOther · 31/05/2025 00:41

Judging you now too 🤷🏽‍♀️

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 31/05/2025 00:48

Yeah I judge half wits who read the mail, the sun, GB news.

It's not like you're absorbing intelligent media

You're reading stupidity.

TempestTost · 31/05/2025 01:25

It was rude OP.

GB news has a couple of good shows, but more importantly, they will report on things that some other media sources suppress.

The Guardian being one of the worst for that, but I don't imagine your stupid rude colleague would read broadly enough to know.
