Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

What’s GB news all about?

Grammarnut · 30/05/2025 22:51

2ndbestslayer · 30/05/2025 22:24

I wouldn't have said it out loud but I'd have definitely thought it.

You obviously haven't seen Michelle Dewberry take down a TRA - excellent.

Grammarnut · 30/05/2025 22:51

It's rude. He probably reads the Grauniad.

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 22:30

GB news is not accepted on MN op, you’d be better asking unbiased people! I’ve never seen it btw, I just know it’s very judged on here just at the mere mention of it!

You seriously think it’s biased to think GBNews is awful??

Sassysoonwins · 30/05/2025 22:52

I would make quite a few assumptions about anyone openly admitting they watch it. I would assume they are very right of centre.

Bigwelshlamb · 30/05/2025 22:53

I would have judged you similarly.

ThatNaiceMember · 30/05/2025 22:53

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:33

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

That's sounds like my parents... Who only got the Daily Mail for the crossword... Two years later their politics had changed completely and not for the good 😩

whitewineandsun · 30/05/2025 22:54

Farage being seen as entertaining is so fucking depressing.

Fairyliz · 30/05/2025 22:54

Can anyone explain how they know it is awful if they never watch it?

Mrsknowitall · 30/05/2025 22:55

Omg what have you done to yourself 😂 didn’t you realise that mumsnet is full of lefties and only watch mainstream media! You are gonna get flamed for this lol (me too no doubt for this comment) but I too watch a bit of gb news along with mainstream news, reason being is that they report on everything that is really going on in the world that the mainstream media like to keep covered. Each to their own I say, live and let live. And yes your colleague was being a rude arsehole.

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 22:55

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/05/2025 22:51

Yes I do. People can watch what they want. Just because if something doesn't align with your political views, that’s ok. It’s ok to have different opinions and watch different things.

PermanentTemporary · 30/05/2025 22:56

It's possible to identify a news source as intrinsically dodgy and overall aiming to mislead. That doesn't mean it will never have anything impartial or reasonable on it, just as a mug of liquid dipped out of the sewer will contain some water. It's just that the amount of shit in that mugful means that the water is still likely to fuck up your health. And anyone who deliberately drinks out of the sewer shouldn't be surprised that people think they're making dangerous choices.

You’re going to get an almighty massive bollocking for this🤣

The entire viewership of GBeebies seems to be on here … personally I prefer my right-wing racism from a variety of sources, maybe the Daily Mail, Fox News or Mein Kampf … I then know I’m getting the kind of broad opinion, on which I can base my views.

😄

TiswasPhantomFlanFlinger · 30/05/2025 22:57

GB New is classified as an entertainment channel, not a new channel.

BIWI · 30/05/2025 22:58

Oh - the tin foil hat brigade have joined us! Grin

Because their (valid) view is different to yours? Excellent🤣

Some of these replies make me laugh. What I find strange these days is how there seems to be an unspoken list of “approved” things/ people it’s socially acceptable to watch or read. And if you step outside that, nincompoops start treating you like you’ve revealed some deep personal flaw.

Watching GB News doesn’t mean you’ve signed a lifelong contract agreeing with everything ever said on it. Sometimes you watch things because you’re curious, want to hear a different view or whatever. That used to be considered a healthy, open-minded approach.

Or a credulous inability to distinguish between news and utter nonsense.

Shudacudawuda · 30/05/2025 22:59

Fairyliz · 30/05/2025 22:54

Can anyone explain how they know it is awful if they never watch it?

They've been told what to think and daren't watch it themselves to form their own opinion.

I sometimes watch it, I loved Free Speech Nation and the occasional Dewbs & co.
Can't abide Farage.
I also watch BBC news, read the Guardian and the Telegraph. Can you guess my political persuasion from that?

If you think the Guardian is full of the truth you are utterly deluded. Getting two different takes on the same story is the right way to approach things in my opinion.

2ndbestslayer · 30/05/2025 23:01

Gbeebies has tickled me I must admit

tillyandmilly · 30/05/2025 23:01

My friend watches GB News and loves it - I would never fall out with her over this though or judge her - everyone is entitled to watch what they want and have an opinion -

Figgygal · 30/05/2025 23:01

Would i say anything probably not but my face would say a thousand words for Me.
Its a disgusting propaganda machine for farage any anyone else spouting hateful rhetoric and yes I'd judge anyone who watches it and considers it "news"

BIWI · 30/05/2025 23:02

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 22:59

Nope. That was a point about the whole conspiracy theory that the MSM is concealing ‘truth’ from the rest of us.

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 23:02

Fairyliz · 30/05/2025 22:54

Can anyone explain how they know it is awful if they never watch it?

Because someone down at the ‘anyone that doesn’t vote Labour is a bigoted racist’ club has told them. Therefore, despite never having watched such a despicable racist show, they’ve decided that anyone that does watch it has no value as a human being.
