Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

No.

ETA:

But in that scenario the wealth fund is taking the role of "the rich" in owning assets that produce an income. And the distribution to fund public services is in effect a "tax". So it's the same principle. Wealth pools around capital, capital has to do something to reinvest it into the economy in ways that enable less rich to also be economically active or the whole thing seizes up.

Edited

I agree. And I agree that it would better if debates around taxation and public expenditure were more nuanced than the usual 'austerity bad/benefit scroungers' simplistic sloganeering we hear. But taxation is just a necessary evil - it is the state removing individuals' possessions, it reduces their living standards, and it distorts economic incentives. So starting from a position of, ceteris paribus, we should look to have a low level of taxation, is entirely sensible.

The thing is all these left wing zealots are seeing life from the prism of their Islington townhouse . The number of immigrants doesn’t affect them . Theirhotels won’t be no go zones , their streets won’t have loads of young men in gangs on street corners leering at their teenage daughters , they won’t have unwanted new housing estates built to accommodate all these newcomers who share no culture or values . They won’t struggle to get to see Dr’s or dentists or fight for school places no any shortcoming in their area they’ll just pay to go private . Their virtual signalling is because they have no idea . The country is broke with no signs of recovery but they’ve made their money so don’t care . The only people who should have a voice are the working class communities whose lives have been impacted and that’s exactly why Nigel Farage is doing so well . He recognised the issues , accepts they are real and empathises . Sir Keir no idea is as far removed from working class reality as it’s possible possible to be , no matter his cries of my dad was a toolmaker or some such way of describing the factory owner . He cannot make amends now because people have seen what he is about , his true colours , WFA, crippling NI costs. Farmers , fishermen . He has no care or regard for the working classes . In fact you could say NF is an excellent politician because he is forcing Sir Keir no idea to backtrack on some of these awful policies . Who’d have thought the left were more harsh on the vulnerable than the tories .

Edited

This is exactly what they want you to believe, that immigrants are the cause of you not being able to get a doctor's appointment etc. Chronic underfunding by the Tories is what's led to this, not asylum seekers.

Ditto them being in hotels - a system should have been out in place for fast turnaround of asylum seekers and those not eligible to stay should be deported swiftly. Again, this is the fault of a right wing government.

I'm neither rich, nor live in Islington but I am able to see past the front page of the Daily Mail.

Background and intelligence? No not at all.
But would I make a judgement about your political beliefs and values? Yes I would, I don’t see why that is so controversial. I’d just assume we were quite different people and that’s okay. Watch what you want, it’s just not for me!

You'd make a judgement about someones political beliefs and values based on what news they watc

Surely- as a Psychologist- as you claim to be - you'd know that the media someone consumes is just that, media and not necessarily an informed or even conscious choice that supports what you think think that media represents?

So really isn't indicating anything about that person at all?

It's news/TV

Tell me what you think watching Sky news means about a person, their political beliefs, values, or their life?

Or BBC?

As a Psychologist, do you think everyone is exercising an informed political and value-based decision based on the media they consume?

Or do you think for a lot of people, they don't know what it apparently indicates to people like you judging them and would absolutely not align themselves with a lot of the judgements you're making without evidence other than someone watching a TV channel?

Is that really how you operate as a clinical Psychologist in the world?

That you think one choice, which may not even be a conscious one, tells you about their political views and values?

Do you think high numbers crossing is ok? Over a thousand in a day for example

Well as part of a package yes. And few if any would have argued if you claimed a Telegraph reader was unlikely to be a Labour voter, or a Guardian reader a Reform voter ?

Mind you I did have a rather activist colleague who was never seen without a Daily Mail. Which turned out to be something he bought in the lunch break to take home for his wife as part of a routine.

And Dave Gorman not only does the Telegraph crossword, he sets it too 😀

Something like a personal attack? Not sure, doesn't matter anyway because I think you were only joking.

How on earth does looking out for someone on other threads constitute a personal attack? Think you must have misread what I wrote, as your response doesn't make any sense.

Ethelflaedofmercia · 01/06/2025 17:29

I watch GB news too, I don’t seek it out but if it comes up on my home page I’ll watch whatever they say. Same as I do any other news channel

OK, here's a useful definition of virtue-signalling.

"the public expression of opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or social conscience or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue."

You weren't just stating an opinion, you were doing it for precisely the reasons set out above. Whereas I don't. And I'm concerned about whether my opinions are supported by evidence and logic, and consistent with my fundamental moral beliefs, rather than trying to show I'm one of the 'in-group'.

It's astonishing that you can't see the irony in your own posts.

Read your own definition of virtue signalling again, and then read some of your own posts. And have another think about who is actually virtue signalling on this thread.

Clue: I'm not the one claiming to stand up against (perceived) hypocrisy, bigotry and incorrect information and insisting that I'm only posting because of my fundamental moral beliefs.

Bluesuedevest · 01/06/2025 17:40

@SherlockHolmes "Ditto them being in hotels - a system should have been out in place for fast turnaround of asylum seekers and those not eligible to stay should be deported swiftly. Again, this is the fault of a right wing government."

So what if they have no "papers" and we don't know who they are?

What if we have no Returns Agreement with the country they come from?

What if their own country refuses to take them back?

I have asked my (Labour) MP these questions and had no reply

If it was as simple as you say don't you think it would have been done by now ??

Yes, you're the one virtue signalling. You were desperate to ask why I was posting - it's no use you getting upset that I gave you a straight answer.

You still don't see it then? Fair enough, self awareness can't be everyone's strong point.

Anyway OP, next time ask your colleague which programmes they watch. You can run through a list of reasons why you judge them on their choices. Send them into more of a frenzy by asking if they would consider being one of the many lefty plants in the Question Time audience.

Definitely do this. It would be such a GB News viewer thing to do.😆

When I saw a 1000 immigrants had arrived in one day this week I wondered how it all works logistically. Where do you find that many beds to put them in at such short notice. How do you feed and clothe them. My mind boggles.

MyLimeGuide · 01/06/2025 18:14

FlirtsWithRhinos · 01/06/2025 16:23

What is it that will go? The people, or the economic roles they play? If the entreprenuer moves to Dubai, yes her current bank balance goes with her but does that leave a gap for someone in the UK to start the businesses she isn't going to start? If the investment banker is sick of the tax and leaves the UK does his company move his role to somewhere that might not have the favourable location and regulations, or do they hire someone else?

And more generally, I hear your "No" but what is your suggestion? How would you fund public infrastucture and services, or what else would you change, such that the UK workforce can effectively generate wealth within the UK?

I dont know! Maybe a benefits overhaul, (not attacking disabled) not wasting money on net zero BS?
