Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

I wouldn't say anything, but of course I would silently judge you. Choosing to get your "news" from a far right propaganda machine says quite a lot about you. Announcing that fact to the world also says quite a lot.

I would say nothing but when someone tells me who they are, I generally listen.

What do you read and trust? The Guardian, BSkyB and BBC?

FlirtsWithRhinos · 01/06/2025 13:33

Lost the quote, will repost

Well obviously that depends on whether you are blaming years of austerity, a redistribution of money to the rich, an out of control housing market, Brexit and an inability to plan for the future for the demise of the UK or … … ‘immigrants’
GB news will tell you the latter, a modicum of brain usage will tell you it’s the former

It's both. Investment in public intrastructure and services hasn't kept up with population expansion. It would be wrong to say it's all down to immigration but it would also be wrong to say immigration hasn't had an impact.

What's missing is a joined up strategy, because that costs money that no politician is able to persuade the public to fund.

Erm ... by posting on a global social media site? 😆

Isn't that what you're doing as well?

If that counts as virtue signalling, I guess we're both doing it.

Multiple different sources, both UK and International. I find that's the best way to get a balanced picture.

Etaerio · 01/06/2025 13:04

Erm ... the wealthy getting wealthier doesn't mean money is being redistributed to them. Back to school for you 😆

That's what I thought, im not trying to be argumentative, there's no way wealthy are taking from the poor, they are just getting rich by being lucky or extremely clever/talented or extremely hard working, we can't all be equal it doesn't work like that.

Erm, no, because I'm posting in order to correct misinformation and poor arguments, and to call out hypocrisy and bigotry. That's not virtue signalling. Virtue signalling is ... well, it's what you were doing 😆

I've just read a poster say it would be workplace suicide to engage with a watcher of GB News. How on earth these bigots avoid employment tribunals is mind boggling. I guess the Guardian train them well.

It's definitely not only on here that it has a "bad reputation"

its a tv news version of reform. People hate it IRL too

Some do, some don’t. Both are ok.

OonaStubbs · 01/06/2025 13:41

All news channels are "infotainment" to at least some extent.

You're doing it right now...setting yourself up as the saviour of the internet. Whereas I was merely responding to the OP.

I'm guessing it's only virtue signalling when someone is expressing opinions that you don't like. Wink

Now that I know you're on a crusade to call out bigotry, poor arguments and incorrect information, I'll ensure the I look out for you on all of the right wing disinformation threads. You'll be kept incredibly busy, I'm sure, but it's a wonderful public service that you'll be performing.

1200 illegal migrants crossed on 18 boats just yesterday alone . Just how much longer can we support this before the country goes bankrupt. Where will they live when there are no houses ?

Maybe premier league football players can give up their money to put them up in fancy hotels???

You responded to the OP solely to announce your wonderfully Goodthink credentials to the world. I understand you might be piqued that I'm doing something more constructive. But that's a 'you' problem 😆

Or go one better and house them in their mansions? Only if they are vetted and turn out to be law students, of course😉

You’re right. I watch the BBC 6pm news every week day. It’s ok but BBC breakfast is appalling. An endless run of charity and sob stories. Their sports reports are totally Anglo centric. Although that’s true of most channels

No, I expressed an opinion. As you often do yourself. Because MN is a forum in which people are free to post what they think.

Given that MN is an anonymous forum, it would be pretty pointless to use it to announce any sort of credentials to the world.

It's interesting that some of you construct the expression of an opinion as "virtue signalling". I've noticed that people on the right do this a lot when people say things that they disagree with. It's an odd one. What virtues exactly do you think I'm trying to signal? You're the one defining my opinions as "virtuous"/"goodthink"...for me, they're simply my opinions, but I'm flattered that you think I have a reason to consider them virtuous. Do you find your own views lacking in virtue?

HingeBracket · 01/06/2025 14:12

Dangermoo · 01/06/2025 10:48

You're admitting you're a Tory on MN? Good on you. It's like putting a chicken in a foxes' den.

There are so many ‘right wing’ people on MN. Look at this thread. I don’t think there is quite the huge left wing majority that MN has a reputation for, these days.

Etaerio · 01/06/2025 14:17

OK, here's a useful definition of virtue-signalling.

"the public expression of opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or social conscience or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue."

You weren't just stating an opinion, you were doing it for precisely the reasons set out above. Whereas I don't. And I'm concerned about whether my opinions are supported by evidence and logic, and consistent with my fundamental moral beliefs, rather than trying to show I'm one of the 'in-group'.

HingeBracket · 01/06/2025 14:18

Dangermoo · 01/06/2025 13:24

The irony is their sneering and judgemental attitudes stereotype people; the thing which they are meant to object to. You could tie lefties' 'logic' up in knots all day if you wanted to.

There is sneering and judgement on both sides. From my reading, the most prolific posters on this thread have all been sneering at times, but from different perspectives.

They're wisely not entering the fray perhaps?
