Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

I'm clearly much better than you 😆. You must be so embarrased now. You tried to set yourself up as an expert and you've been proven wrong. That must be humiliating for you.

I'd rather not interact with someone that writes this, you're free to write it and I'm free to ignore you and what I consider your inane posts.

Etaerio · 01/06/2025 11:32

That wasn't addressed to you was it? Still, you're at liberty to drop out of a debate at any point. I don't think anyone will miss you.

@KeepDancing1 "Exactly this. Should any TV channel in the UK be allowed to brand itself as ‘news’ whilst actually being licensed as ‘entertainment’? "

You could say similar about the BBC which is licensed as News but is actually full of leftie bollocks spouted by football pundits

Don't think I've ever heard a football pundit ' spouting lefty bollocks' on the BBC ?
As opposed to condemning genocide on X.

"Automatically assume".

OK, so you have insight into your bigotry which is the first step in addressing it. Do you think there might be any advantages in learning more about people instead of dismissing them on the basis of prejudices, which you admit might be wrong, which you form on a TV programme that they say they sometimes watch?

We all automatically form (unconscious or conscious) judgements about people, it’s what our brain is wired to do (within 1/10 of a second actually; I’ve published research in this area). I am very aware of my biases and prejudices, and I am being honest in saying that yes I would make a snap judgement about you if you said you watch GB news. I’m not saying that this judgment couldn’t then be changed.
Anyway the OPs question was was their colleague right to make a sarcastic comment - no they weren’t, some thoughts are best kept internal!

Is that the sort of condemning genocide which involves sharing images of rats to represent Jews? I admit that I missed the point where being grossly anti-Semitic put you on the right side of history.

That's fair enough. You admit you're a bigot who makes sweeping generalisations about people on flimsy pretexts. It's worth bearing in mind though that the only difference between you and the far-right anti-immigrant racists you decry is the group that you target. The mindset is identical.

Re distribution of money to the rich??? When did this happen? It's the other way round!!!!!! Rich and workers distribute their money to the poor/vulnerable/lazy!! It's called tax.

Well the data is absolutely clear but you can cling to your impression of course

Blimey. It’s probably not just Islington anyway.

Some one mentioned Guardian Reading leftie Islington living Liberals as being the only ones who would judge someone watching GB News.
I am very very far away from being any of those things and I judge

You've published research, so you're an academic? Sorry, but reading your posts, I find that very hard to believe. Then again, as education is indoctrinated by the left, maybe I'm wrong.

TENSsion · 01/06/2025 12:03

Thegreyhound · 01/06/2025 09:14

Well obviously that depends on whether you are blaming years of austerity, a redistribution of money to the rich, an out of control housing market, Brexit and an inability to plan for the future for the demise of the UK or … … ‘immigrants’
GB news will tell you the latter, a modicum of brain usage will tell you it’s the former

Do you think 1,000 of young, undocumented men are an asset to small towns?

We all make sweeping generalisations about people based on flimsy pretexts, that’s my point. You are lying to yourself if you think you don’t. Whether it’s from someone saying “I’m vegan”, “I smack my children”, “I own a Lamborghini”, “I go to church” or “I watch GB news”, you will form a judgement of that person’s character, their values, and whether they are the sort of person you want to put your energy into.
To resort to name calling is a bit harsh.

Yes I think the pp was limiting that post to Islington when those included could live anywhere.

I haven't either. They just have endless articles about Manchester United, the low point being 'as it happens' coverage of an end of season friendly.

First, I didn't resort to name-calling. I used the word 'bigot' in an entirely objective and evidenced (from your own admission) of your attitude to others.

I agree that we all have immediate, perhaps instinctual, reactions to other people. For example, if you were to tell me that you read The Guardian, the first word to come to mind would be "anti-Semite". But - I would reject that instant characterisation because, actually, I don't know if you're anti-Semitic or why you read that paper. Maybe you like the puzzles. Maybe someone who watches GB News fancies the presenter. You should, I suggest, be more open to learning about others and trying to see things from different perspectives.

its only on here that it has a bad reputation because MN imo is v left wing. I’ve heard plenty of people in real life say they watch it.

Watch what you want op!

It's definitely not only on here that it has a "bad reputation"

its a tv news version of reform. People hate it IRL too

Hated so much that, as with Reform, its popularity is sky rocketing.

Andrew Doyle doesn’t support Reform.

Don’t you think these simplistic views are a bit limiting for you?

“If X says it, it must be untrue”

“If X likes it. It must be bad”

“If C tells me it’s good, I must agree”

I think that’s the kind of mad propaganda you get off GB News.
And that anyone, born in the Uk or not, can be an asset (or not) to this country.

Bluesuedevest · 01/06/2025 12:41

hattie43 · 01/06/2025 08:45

The thing is all these left wing zealots are seeing life from the prism of their Islington townhouse . The number of immigrants doesn’t affect them . Theirhotels won’t be no go zones , their streets won’t have loads of young men in gangs on street corners leering at their teenage daughters , they won’t have unwanted new housing estates built to accommodate all these newcomers who share no culture or values . They won’t struggle to get to see Dr’s or dentists or fight for school places no any shortcoming in their area they’ll just pay to go private . Their virtual signalling is because they have no idea . The country is broke with no signs of recovery but they’ve made their money so don’t care . The only people who should have a voice are the working class communities whose lives have been impacted and that’s exactly why Nigel Farage is doing so well . He recognised the issues , accepts they are real and empathises . Sir Keir no idea is as far removed from working class reality as it’s possible possible to be , no matter his cries of my dad was a toolmaker or some such way of describing the factory owner . He cannot make amends now because people have seen what he is about , his true colours , WFA, crippling NI costs. Farmers , fishermen . He has no care or regard for the working classes . In fact you could say NF is an excellent politician because he is forcing Sir Keir no idea to backtrack on some of these awful policies . Who’d have thought the left were more harsh on the vulnerable than the tories .

Edited

^ This nails it.

I disagree, I think calling me a bigot after reading two of my posts is name calling, and ironically extremely judgemental. I doubt you would say that to someone in real life.

Also time is precious, it’s okay not to want to be friends with everyone. I am pleasant to everyone I meet, but that doesn’t mean I would choose to go for a drink with everyone, especially if I thought they had different values to me.
