Peter Tatchell Arrested - Outrageous

Everanewbie · 28/05/2025 11:54

AIBU to be outraged my Peter Tatchell's latest arrest?

For those who have not heard, the famous campaigner attended a recent Gaza protest. He held a placard that demanded Israel stop the genocide, and that Hamas are a shameful, and reiterated their official terrorist status for the torture an execution of a Palestinian man that attended an anti-Hamas demonstration in Gaza. He was arrested on the basis of inciting racial and religious hatred. The police have since apologised indicating that they believed him to be part of a counter-protest. He spent 5 hours in a cell.

Tatchell has attempted to distance himself from his contribution to Betrayal of Youth, sometimes claiming that he was tricked into writing it and didn't know what the book was about. However he gave a glowing review of the book on 13/06/87

I expect the OP is pulling strings for the fun of watching Mumsnetters dance.

It reads that way yes.

No, they are protesting Israel's action in Gaza. PT was also doing that but also highlighted crimes committed by the other side. Evidently, the organisers didn't want to see any hint of a message that diverted from the binary Palestine good, Israel bad purity. I doubt very much that they would have objected to PT's presence had he omitted the bottom half of his placard.

I'll ignore your insult. It demeans you.

"No", refutes nothing in the process, and then proceeds to state what we know.

Your shift from the police to the organisers has been noted, so there is hope yet.

He wasn't.

Met: “Mr Tatchell was initially detained after concerns were raised with officers by stewards from the Palestine Coalition protest. Officers spoke with him and, believing him to be a counter protester, directed him to join the counter protest in its designated area. When he attempted to rejoin the Palestine Coalition protest he was arrested on suspicion of breaching the conditions in place and to prevent a breach of the peace."

Translation "we arrested him because, due to limited resources, we will always arrest the individual who is lawfully exercising his freedom of speech before we arrest the many people threatening physical harm against someone who is lawfully exercising his freedom of speech"

Or maybe "we arrested him because we falsely believed him to be a counter-protestor", but the former is more likely.

In 1997 Tatchell gave a glowing review of another pro-paedophilia book, Dares to Speak - this is the Guardian letter that many people are now familiar with. This is when we first learn about his weird love of the Sambia tribe and their historical child abuse practices which the tribe have since renounced

But how could any one deem his a counter protest? It wasn't. He was protesting against Israel. But he had the nerve to mention evils committed by Hamas too. I think the police wilfully misunderstood the situation to keep the peace. And make no mistake, the peace needed keeping from the fanatics supporting Gaza (read Hamas) not PT, a lone, elderly gay man.

sounds like the paedophile sympathiser got arrested for the wrong crime.
Hey ho - I can't bring myself to care.

JeremiahBullfrog · 28/05/2025 14:48

I agree with him on both Israel and Hamas. But there are plenty of tacit Hamas supporters amongst the kind of people who attended pro-Palestine marches. Standing amongst a group of terrorist supporters with a sign calling out the organisation they support is asking for trouble, to put it mildly. Which is why the police, who would rather avoid goading terrorists to kick off in the streets, asked him to stay away, and then arrested him when he didn't.

whats his being gay got to do with anything?

Also in 1997 Tatchell published this interview with 'Lee' - a 14 y/o looked-after child who was being abused by numerous adult men and who was inexplicably hanging around Tatchell's 'friend's house.

Tatchell thinks it's OK because these things were said by 'Lee' and not by him. It's still up on his website.

Nah. Far too much credit given in that take.

For some reason I have "thick as mince" in my head.. don't know why I'd be thinking of mince although I may have some later.

PencilsInSpace · 28/05/2025 14:50

In 1998 he wrote this lovely obituary for Ian Dunn who was co-founder of the Paedophile Information Exchange

Then there's the video from more recent times, posted upthread. I'm not sure what year that was.

So there seems to be some inconsistency in reporting and I don’t trust anything the police ever have to say.

The mystery continues.

The police should just be honest.. "PT, we are asking you to leave because we don't have the numbers to protect your from the mob. If you don't, we'll detain you for your own safety." Galling that it should be necessary, and in an ideal world it would be whoever gives PT grief at the protest whether it be one, ten, fifty, or fifty thousand that winds up in the cells. But in the real world, its the least bad option.

I can't stand Tatchell, he turns my stomach, but 'you're probably guilty of something' isn't a good way to operate a justice system.

viques · 28/05/2025 14:52

So did Peter Tatchell express his anger and concern when a disabled woman was arrested and held in a police cell for putting a sticker saying Woman : Adult Human Female ( or similar) on a lamp post. Must have missed his apoplectic outrage and letters to his MP.

This post is not intended to discuss PT’s views or his past. Only the fact that he was arrested for his placard. Play the ball not the man.

Peter Tatchell is a turd and his involvement is very unhelpful to any legitimate cause, and he must know it. With nonces as friends, who needs enemies?

And do the free Palestine protestors challenge every perceived injustice? Are Black Lives Matter interested in enslaved workers building stadia in Saudi Arabia?
