Peter Tatchell Arrested - Outrageous

AIBU to be outraged my Peter Tatchell's latest arrest?

For those who have not heard, the famous campaigner attended a recent Gaza protest. He held a placard that demanded Israel stop the genocide, and that Hamas are a shameful, and reiterated their official terrorist status for the torture an execution of a Palestinian man that attended an anti-Hamas demonstration in Gaza. He was arrested on the basis of inciting racial and religious hatred. The police have since apologised indicating that they believed him to be part of a counter-protest. He spent 5 hours in a cell.

Yes fair enough. I don’t disagree with you and I obviously totally disagree with Tatchell’s letter quoted up thread. The only point I was making that seems to have been totally lost was that anthropologists and historians and people citing their work are not themselves paedophiles or ‘paedophile apologists’ just because they note that consent ages differ. It’s just a fact that they do and did, even though we here and now are shocked and disgusted.

Unfortunately for your argument if I'm not mistaken some very dodgy stuff came out about both the anthropologist that tatchell quoted aswell as both his and tatchells representation of the practices of the tribe in question

My point was that it doesn’t make someone an actual paedophile if they note that in different places and at different times different things have been/are tolerated. Just because we here and now don’t think that those things are at all right or ok does not mean they haven’t happened in the past or don’t happen elsewhere

I agree completely, @Thegreyhound, but as I pointed out at 16:15 yesterday, PT may be trying to claim now that he meant something else but it doesn't tally with what he said at the time

Of course the fact that he's been disingenuous at best and dishonest at worst doesn't make him a paedophile, though many think him a paedophile enabler, but given his overt interest in, and various maunderings on, sexual matters relating to children it seems understandable if folk wish to give him a wide berth

The fact PT was held for five hours is not the issue. The issue is pro-terrorist supporters are not being arrested and charged.

Yup. Indeed. Even when Hamas is a terrorist organisation. And the Jew hatred was evident & demonstrable.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/05/2025 14:20

He is very clearly using that very different cultural practice to support his opinion that actually it is ok to abuse children

I haven't read that particular book, @PencilsInSpace, but if this is correct - and if Hoardasurass is right about the anthropologists in question - it would seem to support the idea of the paedophile enabler which many believe PT to be

Add his comment that “it is time society acknowledged the truth that not all sex involving children is unwanted, abusive and harmful”, coming as it did in relation to a piece discusssing children having sex with adults as opposed to those of a similar age, and that's not someone I'd personally tolerate having around children

Periodish · 29/05/2025 14:23

Oh how disappointing. I was hoping you were going to say he's been arrested for his crimes against children!.

It's widely known that he was a contributor to the banned book Betrayal of Youth (Boy) which was published by members of the Peadophile Information Exchange in the 1970s.

The man has been advocating for sex with children for years. Surely it's only a matter of time before he is charged and arrested as a perpetrator?

You can’t seriously be saying that the voters in Bermondsey in 1983 knew that Hughes was bisexual. Because I was there and this is just not true at all

It was common gossip amongst party members/activists of all parties
!= “voters of Bermondsey all knew”.

I was also there at the time.

Yes, fair enough, I don’t disagree. He seems clear enough in his disavowal in recent years but I accept is not at all on sure enough ground in the past. And the tribe thing does not come over well as a detached anthropological study when it’s being used in an overall dubious argument.

It’s very frustrating because he is/ has often been very good on other issues.

I also think his placard was spot on.

The bloke who thinks its fine for adults to have sex with minors?
And took to twitterX to complained when a UK LA cleared bushes in a park beside a playground on the basis it stops (mainly) men engaging in public sex acts?

🤷‍♀️

This. He needs his hard drive checking.
