I love a spooky thread ...anyone else?

My mum saw a man, several times, dressed in Victorian clothing at the top of the stairs in our London family home. She didnt tell my Sisters and I in case we were scared until we were late teens.

One day we were getting a black cab home and as we pulled up the driver said that his relative/friend (cant remember which) use to live there and see a man at the top of the stairs.

Small thing perhaps but when i was about 9 i bought some rubbery 'witch' fingers for a halloween costume. They slid on over each fingertip and there were 10 individual ones in the packet. I opened the packet and put all 10 of them on. When i was done later, i took them off and put them in a pot on my mantlepiece. Months later i took them out of the pot and there were 11. Somehow they'd bred in there 🤣

NC'd for this because it's outing, and prefacing it with the fact that I don't believe in psychic powers!

A few years ago (this is relevant later), I was interviewed for and offered a job that I went on to not take.

At the same time, a woman (who I had never seen or met before)from the estate where I live went missing. She had young children and was experiencing poor mental health, and had left home and not returned. Her husband was worried sick and the police very quickly took it seriously. One of my friends/neighbours had told me about it and it really played on my mind.

I woke up the next morning and told my husband I was cancelling my plans for the morning because I knew where the woman was - I had a clear image in my mind of the place where she would be, and I knew roughly where that was.

The woman had been missing for more than 24 hours at this point. I left the house with my dog, drove to where I thought she would be, and within 10 minutes I'd found her. I asked if she was X, she said no, and I carried on and then called the police when I got further away. They arrived really quickly, and took her to safety.

To this day I have no idea how or why I was so convinced I knew where she would be. Weirdly, I got a message from the recruiting manager of the job I'd been offered to say it was her best friend, and that she was so grateful I'd found her!

Other than that, the only other experience I had was my husband losing his new AirPods before he'd even used them - I hadn't clapped eyes on them before he lost them We were in the car a few days later and he said he still hadn't found them. Without even being aware of what I was thinking/saying, I said "they're in your dressing gown pocket". They were!!!

That reminds me of the 'Dingo Baby', Azaria Chamberlin.

Her mother always insisted she had a matinée coat on when she was taken from the tent, but it wasn't with her other clothes when they were found, that was in 1980.

A British man, David Brett thought he knew where it was, he made the trip to Australia in 1986 and fell to his death from Uluru, the matinée coat was found near by.

Wow, I'd never heard of that before! Thanks for sharing. That experience remains one of the most bizarre of my life; I can't explain it, but I remember so vividly that feeling of just knowing where she was. I was so sure and unwavering that I almost felt embarrassed by the strength of the feeling, if that makes sense?

ninjahamster · 28/05/2025 11:48

When I was a teen I went on holiday to Austria with a friend and her family. At the same time, my parents were in the USA.
One day we went white water rafting. It was after some horrendous weather and was almost cancelled due to the danger but went ahead in the end. Unfortunately the boat capsized and we ended up stuck in the rapids. I remember as I was drowning just thinking, “this is it”. I felt surprisingly calm. I’d hit my head on a rock and was pretty out of it. Luckily for me, somebody pulled me out but I was so calm. I knew I was dying and I wasn’t scared. I was very battered, covered in bruises, huge bruise on my chin.
Over in the states, my dad woke up that morning and woke my mum telling her he had dreamed I was drowning and that I was stuck and dying. My mum said she had never seen him so freaked out and reassured him that it was all ok and that somebody would contact them if there was an issue. He kept repeating that I had bashed my head.

He picked me up from the airport a few days later. He went white as a sheet when he saw my battered face. We worked out he dreamed my drowning at the point that I was. Really spooky.

Two shadow people walked into my kitchen through the patio door one evening when I was up working late. I assumed it was a hallucination due to tiredness and wasn't scared, I actually said "Oh, come on!" out loud, incredulous at what my brain had come up with now, but yes, on the face of it "spooky".

I’ve seen two shadow people ( great way to describe them). They appeared as if sitting in a gallery in a theatre and were watching the comedian I was watching ( it was a large function room not a theatre ). The comedian made a joke about the upcoming World Cup - 2014 they hadn’t even kicked off the first game at that point. And one leant over to the other and said ‘of course they don’t know Germany win yet’. I wasn’t drunk - I was working. They were sort of grey outlines . And I THOUGHT ‘ what the actual f…??’ and they HEARD me and said ‘ s…. She’s seen us’ and disappeared. I obviously didn’t tell anyone at my table what I’d seen they’d have thought me mad. But I did tell everyone Germany would win and they did.

What do you mean “shadow people” can you explain further?

I’ve posted about this before on a different thread, I live in the middle of nowhere. My house is one large house surrounded by field and woodland, in order to get to the nearest town (or even house) I have to walk down an unlit road with bushes on either side of the road separating many fields.

I was walking back from the nearest shop which is only 2 miles away but I had to walk home down the unlit road, it was October and dark at 7.30pm so I took my torch, I’m used to doing it so wasn’t bothered but heard a dragging sound behind me. I shone my torch and saw what looked like a very pale man’s face with a shadowy body, the eyes were black but we100% made eye contact. I turned round with the torch to see what was in front on me in the hope a person was walking down, no one was about.

It must have been a split second that I turned but when I turned back no one was there. I ran home to DP and he doesn’t believe in anything woo (neither did I, I would have laughed if someone else said it) but I was in such a mess he completely believed me.

I refused to walk that way for a few weeks but we live next to a hotel surrounded by the same fields and woodland, I am a gym member at the hotel and hate driving what is a 2/3 minute walk. In the end I went back to walking and for weeks it was fine.

After a few weeks I heard the same noise and looked and saw a shadowy figure very slowly walking across the road in front of me. Again I was terrified and my DP came from our house to see if he could spot anything but saw nothing.

I stopped walking to the gym again but the light nights were here and the gym car park is always full, we are pretty much next door to the hotel so I carried on walking.

I’ve seen the “shadow person” again since then on two occasions, I have never seen a face again and it just looks like a shadowy figure in black always in the same place.

We live on what was a major toll road I looked at historical accidents and haven’t found any. There was a fatal car crash in exactly the same place in 2021 but that was a young woman who died and I can’t bear to think there is any association.

I have googled “shadow ghosts” or figures so many times but it just comes up with fiction and nothing like I’ve described. I have posted in other “woo threads” but no one has experienced similar who has posted.

I can’t avoid that stretch of road but I’m desperate for some kind of explanation, someone to see it or someone who has experienced similar.

Please can you explain more on your “shadow people” and if they seem similar to
my experience?

I was literally the last person who would say I’ve encountered this, I am very much on the side of science and don’t believe ghosts or anything similar exist. I believed I was hallucinating till the second time and blamed it on poor mental health! Reading someone else might have seen similar is swaying me from that idea a bit…

Oh wow, your experience sounds pretty scary.

Mine were like shadows you'd see on the ground in the sunshine, but upright, slightly transparent and more amorphous - like blobby outlines of people, but they moved like people walking slowly. It didn't feel threatening, almost that I knew them. Anyway I put it down to my vivid imagination, tiredness and love of ghost stories!

Ooo love a spooky incident

i used to work in a pub and when we’re closing up one night we were in the office which was upstairs cashing up etc and someone/thing knocked on the office door. There was no else in the pub and doors were locked Very strange, you used to be able to hear voices upstairs too coming from the store room next to the office again no one in there when checked.

my dh is a skeptic and doesn’t believe me but that pub was definitely haunted.

spoonbillstretford · 28/05/2025 12:10

When I drove to the funeral directors to make arrangements for my mum, Spotify chose for me Copacabana (my mum loved Barry Manilow and we went to a concert together many moons ago) on the way there and Please Mr Postman (my dad loved The Carpenters and was a postman) on the way back. Not spooky but nice, really and made me smile.

TheBewleySisters · 28/05/2025 12:21

Years ago when I was a child and then teenager, my mother (a widow) was always consulting mediums and palmists and so on. One evening when I was about 15 (and an obnoxious teenager) I came home to find she had some friends over and they had been using a ouija board. They had stopped the session for tea and biscuits, but the glass and the board were still laid out on the table. I saw this and scoffed 'you don't believe in this rubbish too?' And the glass rose up from the table and broke in mid-air. I've never told anyone this before.

The first house I ever bought was an old terrace house, I remember getting up to go to the bathroom one night and as I came back I saw a figure dressed in a hat and coat leave the room, quietly woke up my hubby said that I thought we had a burglar, he had a look around found nothing. I had two ornaments that I faced a certain way, every morning they would face a different way. One night my hubby was working late, I had gone to bed, felt him get into bed, thinking nothing of it, when I woke up in the morning, no one was in bed with me, hubby had worked all night. Another time we had been away on holiday and came home to a pair of slippers in the middle of the hallway, they were not there before we left! Things like this was a regular occurance, generally it happened more to me, nothing nasty just little things. But hubby did keep finding things of his moved, tools that he had just used etc. it wasn't scary if that makes any sense, After 5 years or more I did split from that husband and left the house and went back to my mums. When I went back to the house to collect the rest of my belongings, I was on my own packing away my things, when I heard the front door open, thinking it was ex hubby who wasn't suppose to be there by court order, I was scared, but went to hallway and no one was there, thinking nothing more, then I had imagined it, I went back to my packing as I only had a certain window of time, as I packed the things into a van, exhubby turned up outside the house demanding to know why I locked him out of his house, told him I hadn't but the time did coincide with the time I had heard a noise in hallway, exhubby insisted I had locked him out but I hadn't, I wondered if it was the ghost protecting me, knowing that I was unsafe

At my school friends funeral, we had balloons to release just outside from where the servuce was. Her auntie had a butterfly one (she loved them) all our balloons went up but the butterfly one drifted over to where she was laying.

I often look at my sleeping husband's face at night to see of he's asleep yet & I should off the tv only his face isn't his face. I put it down to maybe also having fallen asleep & am looking at him half awake but I am always awake enough to have that rational thought & it still looks different

Hi - see my comment about this too? The best way I could describe it is like one of those magic eye pictures. Where suddenly you can see the real picture amongst the patterns. My eyes could suddenly see them and I could hear them ( in my head - telepathically) and they could hear me. Then they defocussed and were gone. They almost looked like they were draped in cloth like the sand people in Star Wars dressed and were grey with no facial features they I could see.

Lorrymum · 28/05/2025 13:37

Sitting outside a pub next to Basing House ruins (destroyed by Roundheads in Civil war) It was midweek and the road was completely deserted. A guy suddenly appeared, walking down the middle of the road dressed in full cavalier costume. He stopped on the road, took off his hat and did an exaggerated bow in my direction and walked on.
I knew that Basing sometimes held Civil War re-enactments and when my OH appeared with our drinks I mentioned it to him. He went back in to the pub to be told no re enactments for many months and that I had probably seen a local ghost who appeared in the area.

My Nana moved into sheltered accommodation and from the moment she moved into her new flat she said she could hear voices and singing. Lots of prayers, readings from the bible and hymns being sung. None of us could hear anything and it could be quite spooky because she’d start humming along and then ask if we could hear it. She told us that lots of what she could hear was about the dear departed and that made it worse.

Fast forward a few weeks to Dad changing her hearing aid battery and noticing that the switch was in the T position….she was picking up the hearing loop from the Church across the road!

I'm a hearing aid wearer - that's brilliant! Your poor nana

It was a hot summer night and my bedroom was roasting so I decided to sleep downstairs on the sofa where it was cooler.

I woke up suddenly in the night and reached down to the floor to get my phone to check the time. I couldn’t find it so looked under the sofa. A man was hiding underneath the sofa grinning up at me. I can still picture him clearly, about 50 and skinny with a shaved head. It was so real and vivid. It was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced.

I screamed and turned the light on and the man disappeared. Spent the rest of the night shaking with all the lights on!

Weirdly, I don't normally walk my dog locally (he hates other dogs), I only took him with me so I wasn't completely alone. And in hindsight I didn't actually tell the police the preamble; I just called and said I'd found someone I thought was the missing woman. When they arrived they didn't ask me any questions so there was no reason/opportunity for it to come up

I have had a few experiences, but this is by far the spookiest because someone else witnessed it too.

I was at work in my office. There was another office next to it, with a little waiting area outside.

I was talking to someone in my office, when I saw someone walk through the little waiting area into the other office. Usually people knock and wait before entering that office, but this time they didn't, so I called out 'hello??' (The other person who was in my office talking to me said they definitely saw someone walk in).

Because no-one responded, I got up and went to check who had walked in. There was no-one there. No one was in that office. But someone had walked in!!!!!

Argh

The whole thing was never resolved.

Bear in mind the place was an old building and other people had seen/heard strange goings on. I wouldn't want to be there alone at night, put it that way.

I had just moved house and I was living alone with my elderly dog. She was always well behaved, well trained and quite independent. She was sleeping downstairs in the living room. One night she woke me up barking, crying, distressed, appeared to be in a complete panic. Very out of character for her to wake me up like that. I didn't know what was wrong, I let her out to the toilet, offered food, water, comfort but she was really worked up and just kept looking at me with such fear in her eyes. Due to her age I had been suspecting some doggy dementia for a while so figured it was that, plus the stress of the house move. I slept on the couch with her that night as her arthritis was too bad to go upstairs to the bedroom.

I fell asleep and I suddenly hear this voice in my head shouting my name, telling me I needed to wake up. All this time my eyes are still closed and I can't open them. The voice kept saying "Wake up, you are in danger, wake up! Someone is standing there watching you, you need to wake up NOW!" My eyes still closed and I couldn't seem to open them, but weirdly I was seeing this all black shadow figure in the room staring at me, watching me. They were tall, seemed larger than a typical human. I managed to force my eyes open and there was nothing there, but my dog was staring at that exact part of the room in a stressed panting state. I put it down to a form of sleep paralysis but the whole night was very usual.
I never felt alone in that house again and my dog continued to have very unusual fearful behaviours at night for weeks after, but I never saw that figure again. But I also didn't allow myself to sleep on the couch again and made my new boyfriend stay with me all the time after that!

I used to call my my Old Bat as an affectionate nickname, She died at the height of COVID in 2020 in a care home and I was in the US and couldn't be with her. I felt so sad and guilty about that and obsessed about all the times I'd been impatient with her (we actually had a very good relationship over all but she could be challenging due to difficult MH.) About 2 week after her funeral, it was summer and I was sitting in my living room with front and back doors open. A bat came flying through the back door, circled the living room, and went out through the front door. And that's when I knew she was safe and happy wherever she is now.

MadisonAvenue · 28/05/2025 14:46

I used to be the manager of a high street store which was housed in a Victorian building. Behind the shop was my office, a staff area and stock room with a flight of stairs leading to two further stock rooms upstairs.

I hated going upstairs, it felt really eerie and on a couple of occasions I saw a mist, in the size of a large person, in one of the rooms which quickly disappeared.
What really freaked me out though was that there were times when I was in the downstairs stockroom when I felt that I was being watched and the feeling was so strong that I was sure that if I looked up the stairs I’d see a man standing there. Of course I never looked, I kept my head down and avoided looking anywhere in that direction.

I never mentioned any of this to anyone else in case they used it as an excuse to avoid going upstairs!
One day I was in my office, doing paperwork just before the store closed, and one of the assistants was mopping the floor in the downstairs stockroom. She suddenly ran into my office, pale and shaking, and said she’d glanced upstairs as she mopped and there was a man standing there watching her.

Taught ESOL during summer hols at an elite, prestigious boarding school. All the boarders had returned to families, and the school hired their premises to this ESOL company, which did attract the kids of rich families from all over the world.

My friend (H) was setting up her classroom one day and heard a loud bang in the classroom upstairs. She (H) was the only one in the building at the time. The other teacher before H left the keys with my friend, so H could lock up on her way out. H reported the noise felt hostile and unfriendly so she didn’t stay much longer than 15 minutes, left and locked up.

I was intrigued by this, and began asking a few questions. A very old boy, affiliated with the school year round, was very candid (probably too much for the school’s liking) and spoke like this was an open secret, “oh yes, there was a fey Irishman who taught Maths in that room and he was always talking about a ghost”.

The man who reported this was a sensible, elderly ‘middle England’ type of chat who didn’t seem like someone who’d be prone to flights of fancy.

So I made arrangements to go back to this room late at night.

I’ll continue this story a bit later.
