I love a spooky thread ...anyone else?

Two shadow people walked into my kitchen through the patio door one evening when I was up working late. I assumed it was a hallucination due to tiredness and wasn't scared, I actually said "Oh, come on!" out loud, incredulous at what my brain had come up with now, but yes, on the face of it "spooky".

I heard a phantom train announcement. I was walking for the bus when I heard a male voice announcing the train to Tonbridge from platform 2. I didn't know there was a train station in Hawkhurst, so I decided to look up the times when I got to work. Found out that the station closed in the 50s and platform 2 was never even built.

It was probably a model railway enthusiast playing a recording, but it spooked me for ages.

My dad was dying at the beginning of Covid. His final days became weeks and it dragged on and on. He had dementia and had no idea but it was incredibly cruel. I ordered myself some beautiful new bedding for self care to curl up in and hide from everyone, but due to Covid it had a long delivery time and wasn’t due to arrive for weeks. The very next morning my dad died. After a very emotional phone call with my mum, I found the bedding in a package on my doorstep.

This happened over 20 years ago, when I was a student. I was the first one back to the house after the easter break and decided to take a nap. I locked my door to stop a returning housemate from barging in and settled down to sleep.
Sometime later, I heard the door open and footsteps as someone walked across the room towards me. Before opening my eyes, I remember thinking it was odd, as I was sure I'd locked the door.

Peering up blearily, expecting to see a housemate, I instead came face to face with a woman. She was late middle age, very neat looking (hair in a bun, summer dress). She smiled strangely at me, introduced herself and then suddenly leant forwards and pinned me to the bed, all the while smiling too widely. I closed my eyes in fear, immediately felt her hand release me and when I opened my eyes again, she was gone.

It was presumably a nightmare or sleep paralysis, but it really scared me for a while and I didn't lock my door again after that, as if that had somehow welcomed her in...

I've not seen anything but I once lived in a flat that terrified me. I have never been scared or worried about living alone before this or since. I can only explain it like there was a lion in the flat that I knew was there but I couldn't see it. After about 3 weeks of being scared to go in, look in anything reflective etc etc I basically moved in with a friend for most of the week. When I did stay in my flat , I took a friend. It was scary even in the full summer day, not just at night.
Eventually my tenancy was up. That was 10 years ago and the flat is constantly up for rent. Several sales have fallen through too.

What do you mean “shadow people” can you explain further?

I’ve posted about this before on a different thread, I live in the middle of nowhere. My house is one large house surrounded by field and woodland, in order to get to the nearest town (or even house) I have to walk down an unlit road with bushes on either side of the road separating many fields.

I was walking back from the nearest shop which is only 2 miles away but I had to walk home down the unlit road, it was October and dark at 7.30pm so I took my torch, I’m used to doing it so wasn’t bothered but heard a dragging sound behind me. I shone my torch and saw what looked like a very pale man’s face with a shadowy body, the eyes were black but we100% made eye contact. I turned round with the torch to see what was in front on me in the hope a person was walking down, no one was about.

It must have been a split second that I turned but when I turned back no one was there. I ran home to DP and he doesn’t believe in anything woo (neither did I, I would have laughed if someone else said it) but I was in such a mess he completely believed me.

I refused to walk that way for a few weeks but we live next to a hotel surrounded by the same fields and woodland, I am a gym member at the hotel and hate driving what is a 2/3 minute walk. In the end I went back to walking and for weeks it was fine.

After a few weeks I heard the same noise and looked and saw a shadowy figure very slowly walking across the road in front of me. Again I was terrified and my DP came from our house to see if he could spot anything but saw nothing.

I stopped walking to the gym again but the light nights were here and the gym car park is always full, we are pretty much next door to the hotel so I carried on walking.

I’ve seen the “shadow person” again since then on two occasions, I have never seen a face again and it just looks like a shadowy figure in black always in the same place.

We live on what was a major toll road I looked at historical accidents and haven’t found any. There was a fatal car crash in exactly the same place in 2021 but that was a young woman who died and I can’t bear to think there is any association.

I have googled “shadow ghosts” or figures so many times but it just comes up with fiction and nothing like I’ve described. I have posted in other “woo threads” but no one has experienced similar who has posted.

I can’t avoid that stretch of road but I’m desperate for some kind of explanation, someone to see it or someone who has experienced similar.

Please can you explain more on your “shadow people” and if they seem similar to
my experience?

I was literally the last person who would say I’ve encountered this, I am very much on the side of science and don’t believe ghosts or anything similar exist. I believed I was hallucinating till the second time and blamed it on poor mental health! Reading someone else might have seen similar is swaying me from that idea a bit…

Well, that's spooky. I was just about to post exactly this question. 👻 👻 👻

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 28/05/2025 09:06

This was nearly 40 years ago.
My mum had a brother (my uncle obviously) who lived with their mum in the next road to us, he’d never left home. This uncle had had some ‘supernatural’ experiences himself but that is another story. My mum, my uncle, nan and I were all extremely close.
I was in my mid twenties when this happened, married and living in the next town by this time.
One night I went to bed and had the most vivid and disturbing dream. In my dream I was in my house alone and I became aware of someone/ something trying to get in, the feeling of menace was palpable. I heard them at the door, became aware of them walking up my stairs to my bedroom and panic filled every sinew of my body. I did the only thing I could think of and picked up the phone and rang my mum. All the while this threatening presence moved ever closer. Mum answered but she didn’t seem to be able to hear me no matter how loudly I screamed. The dream ended with the imminent threat literally at my door.
As I so often did I drove round to visit my mum the next day, still deeply disturbed by my dream. We chatted over a cup of tea as was usual but neither of us was quite ourself. In the end she asked me if I was ok. The dream had been so unsettling I didn’t really want to talk about it but reluctantly I recounted my experience. When I finished initially there was silence and mum just stared back at me. Then she told me that the previous night she had also had a dream, that had disturbed her greatly. In her dream she was in her house and her phone had rung, she’d answered and it was me in great distress and she’d tried to talk to me but I couldn’t seem to hear her and she was overwhelmed by a feeling that I was in danger and she’d tried but was powerless to help.
Mum and I had often had difficult to explain telepathic experiences but this one left us both cold.
Very soon after and unexpectedly my uncle died and mum and I concluded that our shared dream had been a type of premonition of the impending trauma we were to experience.
That isn’t the end.
My uncle’s death was profoundly painful for mum and I and the first time I had lost someone so very close to me. I suffered my grief very badly, I was inconsolable.
One night I went to bed, I hadn’t been sleeping well at all but this night I lay in bed and as I lay there I felt a tender hand gently touch mine. It was a very comforting touch. Then I found myself outside my Nan and uncle’s house on the green, the sun was shining and I felt comfort from its warmth, and there was my uncle; holding my hand. He smiled at me, he had the sweetest smile and I could smell his familiar scent. I felt peaceful for the first time since he’d died and I felt he was telling me he was ok. The next day I told my mum about my dream and unbelievably she had also experienced a similar dream the previous night although the long passage of time has stolen the details of her experience from me. We both felt very comforted by our dreams and believed that my uncle had come to comfort us.
They are all gone now.

Living in my old house I regularly saw a shadow dart across the landing. It didn’t really frighten me it was just one of those things.

Then one day I was sitting in one of the bedrooms and with my dsis and dsis saw someone pop their head round the door. She looked up and said hello thinking it was my dd. Dd was out and there was no one else in the house so I was like “who on earth are you talking to”.

She was adamant that she’d seen someone peep round the door. She was so spooked she wouldn’t go upstairs in the house again.

No idea if there was a ghost but the woman who’d lived in the house before me had a very tragic story, there had been a lot of tragedy for her and her family and she’d died from an overdose (not in the house) but shortly after leaving. NDN had filled me in. The house was also built on the site of an old 50s high rise block. So there would have been hundreds of residents living on the site before. I do sort of believe that places hold onto an energy of what has been there before. So who knows.

LadyButtonofButtonHouse · 28/05/2025 09:15

When I lived in a rented house that belonged to a vicar and his wife, I woke up and saw a man leaning over DH. I turned on the light and he vanished, DH woke up and I explained what I had seen and described the man - he said it was his Grandad. I had never met his Grandad but my description was spot on apparently.
In that same house, if you went to the toilet at night sometimes the bathroom light would go on and off repeatedly. Bulb checked, electrics checked, no damp getting up there etc. It wasn't so much scary as annoying in the end, I used to ask whoever was doing it to just let me wee in peace!

Also saw a shadowy figure on the landing outside the bathroom several times.

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks, my DM was sometimes acutely telepathic, but only (that I know of) when a family member was in acute distress. I know of just two cases where she knew (via a dream) exact details of what was happening two thousand miles away (in my case) and even further when it was her sister in Canada. In neither case was it ‘being wise after the event’ - she was worried enough to communicate what she ‘knew’. In my case, it was in a letter written the very morning after she’d had the dream, with exact details of what I’d been going through. And she never wrote - it was always my father,

I was seriously spooked! But I never told her she’d been spot on.

She was always a hyper-sensitive type anyway, which could TBH sometimes make her difficult to live with - taking offence at the tiniest thing, etc.

When you compare the sheer complexity of the human brain to e.g. a cheap radio, TBH it no longer surprises me that some people’s brains can pick up others’ thought waves.

Astrak · 28/05/2025 09:50

When I was a child, I used to ride my pony to our farrier's yard about five miles away. The pony was a very safe and sensible animal and I had ridden him (initially with adult supervision) since I was about two years old.
To get to the farrier, we had to go past what was known as The Haunted House. This was a ramshackle old place where the live-in maid had, allegedly, been murdered by "persons unknown". The village gossip was that the wife of the couple who lived there at the time had murdered the maid, as her husband was having an affair with her. The couple tried to sell the cottage without success. They moved away and were never seen again. I think the pony was sensing the maid's unquiet spirit.

Many moons ago,I lived in york (born and bred)
I would have been about 17 (I'm now 47) and my ex and I where walking up micklegate bar towards the bar walls (it's the entrance where royalty come into 'old' york)
Above it,is like an 'flat' with very old windows (unless you know it,it's very hard to describe)
We'd had two beers but where nowhere near being pissed (I could handle my beer then-two pints and I'd be asleep now)
Anyway my ex suddenly says 'can you see that little girl?'
I looked up and indeed there was a little girl, aged about 6/7,blonde ringlets and she was sobbing her eyes out
We tried to get the attention of a nearby policeman but he brushed us off (no mobiles then) and when we looked back, she'd gone
We agreed between ourselves that maybe we where more pissed than we thought and went home
Everytime I walked up micklegate bar,I could glance up to see if she was there and she never was
Fast forward to the 1st covid lockdown
I was watching something on YouTube (via the telly) and the next video was 'ghosts of york'
I left it to run but wasn't playing that much attention to it
Until I heard 'Sarah brocklebank' and 'micklegate bar'
I looked up and there was the little girl I'd seen-even to the colour of her dress
The story goes (that I'd never heard before) was her father was the man to go around the bar walls, locking up the gates as he went every night
On Sarah's 7th birthday, she had a party and somehow the keys went missing
The family looked and looked but nothing and they where thrown out of their home onto the streets
Her ghost is often seen walking around york, looking for the keys or in a window of her old home, crying her little heart out
Nothing will convince me I didn't see little Sarah that night

Another one is my father and I where walking near York minster with toddler dd in her buggy
We both saw a little girl in a window-again crying and choking on her tears (she was wearing an old fashioned cotton nightie and had dark curls)
I passed dd and the buggy to my father and went to knock on the door to let her parents know
They answered and said 'oh,you've seen her too?'
Turns out, when the plague hit york (or anywhere I guess) they would paint a cross on the door and lock the victim in a room for a month (no food or water) to try and stop it spreading
Many people have seen that little girl, sat sobbing her heart out
My father refused to believe he'd seen what he saw and claims I made it all up (even though he saw her first and told me to knock in the first place)

I had the hairs on my neck stand up reading this. Have you asked on your local Facebook groups about this? Maybe others have experienced similar?

I don’t have Facebook but I asked at the hotel next door where a lot of “the locals” have been drinking for years. A few neighbours walk down the road from houses further up from me and said they haven’t seen anything.

I have been tempted to join some facebook groups to ask but unless you live on this road you would only drive and never walk up/down it. I’m also really worried about upsetting the family of the girl who died a few years ago as it was literally exactly where I see the shadow figure.

I was honestly beginning to believe it was some sort of figment of my imagination, I know it wasn’t though.

spookystuff789 · 28/05/2025 10:14

NC'd for this because it's outing, and prefacing it with the fact that I don't believe in psychic powers!

A few years ago (this is relevant later), I was interviewed for and offered a job that I went on to not take.

At the same time, a woman (who I had never seen or met before)from the estate where I live went missing. She had young children and was experiencing poor mental health, and had left home and not returned. Her husband was worried sick and the police very quickly took it seriously. One of my friends/neighbours had told me about it and it really played on my mind.

I woke up the next morning and told my husband I was cancelling my plans for the morning because I knew where the woman was - I had a clear image in my mind of the place where she would be, and I knew roughly where that was.

The woman had been missing for more than 24 hours at this point. I left the house with my dog, drove to where I thought she would be, and within 10 minutes I'd found her. I asked if she was X, she said no, and I carried on and then called the police when I got further away. They arrived really quickly, and took her to safety.

To this day I have no idea how or why I was so convinced I knew where she would be. Weirdly, I got a message from the recruiting manager of the job I'd been offered to say it was her best friend, and that she was so grateful I'd found her!

Other than that, the only other experience I had was my husband losing his new AirPods before he'd even used them - I hadn't clapped eyes on them before he lost them We were in the car a few days later and he said he still hadn't found them. Without even being aware of what I was thinking/saying, I said "they're in your dressing gown pocket". They were!!!

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/05/2025 10:21

Ex-DP and I used to live in a converted church. The bell in the spire had been disabled during the conversion (we knew this, having tried when drunk to have a go at bell-ringing.)

Yet every so often for about a year we’d be in our bedroom and hear the sound of soft church bells for about twenty seconds. It wasn’t our church bell and we lived rurally, several miles from the next nearest church. It was a creepy mystery, as if the ghost of a former church warden were letting us know their presence, or a bell of mourning being tolled for one of the deceased in the churchyard outside.

Anyway, turns out I’d accidentally activated some some sort of in-game noise notification alarm alert thing in The Sims, which I played on my iPad, and the iPad was kept in a drawer overnight. One day it started church-belling when I was holding it and that’s how we solved the mystery.

TheCountessofLocksley · 28/05/2025 10:21

They all centre around my mom’s house and my mom.

she lived in a very very remote place in my great great grandparents cottage with an old drovers path running past it. The cottage is at the end of a long farm track, there are no street lights., its real dark skies countryside. I would not go out at night, the dark was oppressive and on more than one occasion I heard the sound of horses and voices/whistling for dogs There is no way any riders/farmers would be out.

Each time I used the loo the light would flicker. It started as a gentle, barely imperceptible flicker and progressed to a full on flashing. I used to say out loud that it was my mums house and I had every right to be there which would calm the flashing down. Every time I visited it got worse and eventually I had to leave the door open because the flickering escalated to the door jamming so I couldn’t get out. This only happened to me.

One time, my xH and I were visiting. We were going through a bad patch and did spilt up a few months later. In bed that night, there was a loud bang directly above our bed and the bedroom door flew open so hard it hit the wall and left a dent. The loft was checked the next day and nothing was out of place.

at the time my mom died I had a panic attack at work. I didn’t know she was dead, it was incredibly sudden. But the panic attack coincided with her time of death. Several years later her partner died (I was no contact with him). I can only describe this as me knowing because my mum told me. I dreamt about her, I could feel her panic and distress and knew something was wrong. Next day, a family member let me know what had happened. When he was buried, the same again. I felt her distress and panic. It was like she needed me to know.

when her younger brother died, similar happened. I dreamt of her and felt her mixed emotions. Luckily that was a few years ago and I’ve not experienced anything again.

When I was a child,I was brought up by my grandad

We had a very close bond and adored each other

He was very proud of his 'silver, not grey hair',he always suffered with his feet, was blind in his left eye (he had white cornea) and on the forefinger of his right hand was a lump instead of a fingernail

I didn't have any photos as my narcissistic mother made sure she locked away any pictures of him to spite me when he died when I was 14

Anyway,I went on to have dd (aged 19) and when she was about 8,we moved house and schools

She was in bed, asleep and I'd gone up about half hour before and was just dozing off

Suddenly she woke up and started screaming that 'a blind Mr with a lumpy finger,a white eye and he had no feet' had been in stood in the doorway of her room

I was in that daze of having just fallen asleep and been dragged out of it so didn't really connect with my grandad in that second

I calmed her down and through her snotty tears told me 'his hair was silver mum,not grey,it was silver'

Grandad had come to see her as she had been going through a bad time with some bitchy girls from school

She took great comfort from this (she knew of grandad but I hadn't had a picture to show her) and a few days later,I forced my mother to dig out the photo albums and as soon as she saw him,she pointed and told me that this is who she'd seen

MamaBobo · 28/05/2025 10:59

My Nana moved into sheltered accommodation and from the moment she moved into her new flat she said she could hear voices and singing. Lots of prayers, readings from the bible and hymns being sung. None of us could hear anything and it could be quite spooky because she’d start humming along and then ask if we could hear it. She told us that lots of what she could hear was about the dear departed and that made it worse.

Fast forward a few weeks to Dad changing her hearing aid battery and noticing that the switch was in the T position….she was picking up the hearing loop from the Church across the road!

GroovyChick87 · 28/05/2025 11:02

I have one that happened to me just the other day. It's not the spookiest thing that's happened but it is weird. A long time ago when I was late teens I had casual drinking friend, I'll call him Mike who was 10 years older. He was a musician and singer in a band but a bit strange and had issues. I wasn't really aware of his issues at the time. Ended up losing touch and never heard from him again.
Years later I googled him to find out he'd sadly died of alcoholism a few years previous. He's now been dead over a decade but I found his YouTube channel with just one video on it. It was him singing a song he'd written, quite an indie/ rock song. The song has been online for 15 years but only had about 150 views. About 3 years ago I searched for his song again and couldn't find it. Never gave it another thought and hadn't thought of him for ages.
Then a couple of days ago I was listening to some nostalgic music, eg Steps, Sclub7 while I was doing my housework and it popped up in YouTube algorithms as a recommended video. I can't think of any explanation of why that would happen. The way I see it is that he was giving me a nudge and wanted me to think of him.

butterfly55 · 28/05/2025 11:21

Mine was very recent. I was watching a video of a Medium (Thomas John) and he said if you want to connect with a loved one who has passed, tell them out loud what you want them to show you. So i said to my Mum, show me a butterfly. A few weeks passed. On Mother's day, the gift from my daughter didn't arrive, and neither did my son's - it was the first Mother's day where I had nothing (rectified days later), anyway my DH bought me a card from the dogs, and it was just a plain green card with a butterfly pin badge attached to it. It felt like a message from her, especially as it said "Happy Mother's Day".

I told my sister this, and she told her 11 year old daughter, and they put out a message for Nanna - the Moon. Later that day, they went out for Mother's Day dinner, and the lady who greeted them at the restaurant was wearing a T-shirt with a moon on it, moon earrings and a moon necklace. They sat down and my sister asked what her DD would think of for her other (deceased) Nanna, she she said the Sun. Their server had a giant tattoo of the sun on her arm.

A few days later, I decided to put another "thing" into the universe for Mum - bumble bee. A few days later, there's a post on facebook by a lady who had the same name as my Mum, with a photo of what she makes....... knitted bumble bees! And to top it off, the name of her company is my Mum's favourite flower - Bluebell creations - we used to pick them in the local woods for years.

Could all be coincidence, but what are the chances?

Years ago my Mum saw a medium, and she was told that she would come to own a guitar under strange circumstances, and that she would win the lottery. About a year later, parents were sat in the garden after a BBQ, and it was about midnight. A guitar came flying over the fence, and landed on their lawn. A few weeks later they won the lottery (£20k). How can this not be spooky? This medium also gave my Mum a message for me - using my name, which is VERY unusual. The message was completely accurate for me at that time, and there's NO way she could have known any of it.

This is sleep paralysis. I had this for a few years. I read it's linked to stress. At the time, I wouldn't have described myself as stressed, but looking back, I was going through divorce and trying to sell a house that wasn't shifting. Once that was all resolved, the sleep paralysis stopped.
