New to this so just wondering how it all works. My first post last night was ok but some people are very nasty about punctuation and grammar. Are people that stuck up about it. Maybe some peope didn’t have good parents or some sat at their desk in class staring into space with not a clue what to do. When everyone was busy writing.

What counts as being “stuck up”? There are some posts on Mumsnet that are so littered with spelling errors that they are barely legible, or completely devoid of punctuation/paragraphs. Personally I just skip past posts like that because I can’t be arsed trying to figure out what the person is asking - does that make me stuck up? I agree some of those posters deserve our sympathy but I’m sure other people are just lazy.

Well this is going to go fabulously. Were you as lovely in your post last night?

Welcome to mumsnet. As with anything in life, some people are nicer than others.

Most people don’t care whether you can spell or not but people do care whether you are rude or not.

SwanOfThoseThings · 27/05/2025 20:06

It's bad form to criticise spelling and grammar on Mumsnet, with the following exceptions:

  • In Pedants' Corner
  • If 'Muphry's Law' applies
AliTheMinx · 27/05/2025 20:23

Spelling and grammar are very important to me, but I would never openly criticise anyone for poor spelling and grammar exactly for the reasons you have outlined. That would be unnecessarily rude.

I understand that as you’ve always had an understanding of how to use it. Whereas I don’t

Or a great example of why SPAG is important.

Using good grammar is not stuck up.

I use Mumsnet and Reddit because they are one of the very few places on the internet where posts and replies have somewhat normal spelling, capitalisation and grammar.

If I wanted to read "hey guys i have a problem plz helpme now xoxo thxhaha!!!!11" then I'll spend time on a local FB group or in the Instagram comments.

Linked · 27/05/2025 20:39

I'm not talking about your spelling and grammar,

I mean coming onto a website and calling other posters 'bitches' isn't going to exactly warm people to you.

You say you want to improve your spelling and grammar, but then call people who are good at it stuck up.

That is why you are getting a hard time. You are just rude

DissDissOrDiss · 27/05/2025 20:39

OP, ‘eats, shoots and leaves’ is a book title / example of why spelling and grammar are important and misuse can change the meaning of a sentence. That poster wasn’t trying to embarrass you.

Calling someone a bitch is pretty unpleasant tbf.

But it’s not for the grammar and punctuation how is that right it’s for mums to come on not judge everyone for the way they write

I didn't read your post Op but based on this I'm not sure the issue people had was solely grammar...

You appear to have created a thread with the express purpose of picking a fight.

DissDissOrDiss · 27/05/2025 20:43

SPAG means people can read posts correctly and succinctly. Lack of results in posts that are hard to understand and require multiple readings…

Linked · 27/05/2025 20:46

When you write with poor spelling or grammar, it might be easier for you to understand what you mean, but for others, it becomes much harder to read and interpret.

If you had asked for advice on how to improve, I’m sure you would have received a much more helpful response. But instead, you were rude and called other posters "stuck up" and "bitches." Can you really not see why that would lead to a negative reaction?
