New to this so just wondering how it all works. My first post last night was ok but some people are very nasty about punctuation and grammar. Are people that stuck up about it. Maybe some peope didn’t have good parents or some sat at their desk in class staring into space with not a clue what to do. When everyone was busy writing.

Yes I know that’s not a good thing to do Mrs Dogcatkitten but with so many it’s hard not to

So instead of admitting you were wrong for calling one person a bitch, you’ve doubled down and decided to imply lots of us are bitches.

rubicustellitall · 27/05/2025 21:11

Can I ask you a question please OP? How old are you? The reason I ask that is because, (and I am not having a go in the slightest at you so please don't think I am) you write your posts like my daughter does, in sort of a text way if you get my drift? She, my daughter types out her texts to me and it is very different to how she would write a letter for example. I struggle to understand her texts sometimes and She thinks I waffle too much in my texts back! Its a generational thing I guess!
Also another thing with Mumsnet is AIBU is often loving classed as being the place for straight answers and some people can be a bit sensitive , people who reply in this section are often called Vipers but we are not really! If AIBU is a bit heavy going maybe posting in the other sections of catagories on here might be better?

The poster means that your attitude needs more attention than your spelling and grammar.

I genuinely don’t realise it tbh I don’t think am being that rude maybe the bitch thing but I was being defensive

No I was wrong and I said that a few times now but not one person has said sorry to me for my way of understanding which is different from everyone else’s

Op, I have dyslexia and struggled at school. I left at 16 and really regretted that I didn’t do well.

5 years ago, at a similar age to you, I went to college and studied functional maths and English. I needed support because of my dyslexia but I got there. I then did an Access to HE course. I’m now 2 years into a degree, and it is bloody hard, but it you ask for help and support it is there, so long as you are willing to accept it without becoming defensive to the point of rudeness.

Nobody can help you without pointing out what you are doing wrong. If you then immediately jump to calling those people bitches and stuck up, you are going to find that willingness to help you immediately disappears

If you look at the top where it says TALK you can find lists of all sorts of topics. Stuff like Relationships, Parenting,Education, Chat , thats a good place as people talk about everything from What they are having for tea to News stuff, and everything in between! There is fashion, holidays, there is a place for every topic you could think of here and it works just like this page but you can find people who have the same things in common etc.

You have to work on that then.

The first piece of work I did for college was returned to me with a lot of it crossed out by my tutor. I was upset but I had to suck it up, because that is the only way you will learn.

I try not to judge bad spelling or grammar but if they are so bad the person’s posts can’t be understood then I pass on by.

That’s fair. I get that if you have used to it the yes it would annoy you

OP posts:
SALaw · 27/05/2025 21:35

Most people don’t mind / overlook spelling and grammar errors if the post is generally comprehensible. However some posts are literally impossible to understand. You can’t work out who the people are that are being written about, what they have or haven’t done and what the poster is asking. I think it’s fair enough to pick them up on that as otherwise they are left wondering why no one is helping them. People need to read their posts back (where they are the OP, less important if just replying) to see if it at all makes sense.

What does it matter if am not good at grammar and punctuation how does that make me a target for you because of that I’ve said im not good at it nor understand it amd im nearly forty do yiu not think am embarrassed about that and worried when it comes to helping my kids

It’s not being stuck up. If you’re worried about helping your kids , maybe access some adult education?

I'm not talking about your spelling and grammar,

I mean coming onto a website and calling other posters 'bitches' isn't going to exactly warm people to you.

You say you want to improve your spelling and grammar, but then call people who are good at it stuck up.

That is why you are getting a hard time. You are just rude

Yes quite.

The OP goes on to post that people who can spell and punctuate look down on those that can't.

Which is a huge generalisation, simply untrue and really quite nasty

DilemmaDelilah · 27/05/2025 21:42

Using correct (or at least understandable) spelling and grammar makes it possible to understand what somebody is trying to say. If something is really badly written it is easy to completely misunderstand the post, or not possible to understand it at all. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, but hopefully something that just had the odd small mistake can still be understood. Just putting in some punctuation helps immensely.

An example: I put something on Facebook for free a few days ago. One of the responses I got was so unintelligible I couldn't understand it at all, so obviously that person didn't get the item - if he was actually asking for it which I still don't know.

It is not necessarily a case of being stuck up, although there's always someone.... It is about being able to understand the post. Just remember to put in some full stops at the end of your sentences, and a comma where you would stop to breath or pause, and that would help a lot.

OP, ‘eats, shoots and leaves’ is a book title / example of why spelling and grammar are important and misuse can change the meaning of a sentence. That poster wasn’t trying to embarrass you.

Calling someone a bitch is pretty unpleasant tbf.

Yes it is and no one’s letting me forget it

Another thing Op you can do on Mumsnet is change your user name as often as you like! This means if you haven't got off to the best start you can forget it and leave it behind and just start again

Thanks so much. I will try to put them in but am afraid they will be all wrong. As I have tried and got made fun of because I replied and but nasty to one comment
