To open the box of wine and crack on….

It’s 2.30pm and I’m on holiday. It’s raining outside and the kids are on their way to kids club. I’m chilling with a book in a communal space (having bought coffee and lunch from the bar). Shall I bring my box of wine down and a glass from my room and have my own party here (discreetly) or just buy their ridiculously expensive wine? For the context, this is an expensive holiday but I’m I like to look after the pennies and brought the wine for the room as there are no shops locally and so everything is very expensive resort pricing.

Also, as a tip for anyone considering the same, boxed wine is having a revolution and I brought The Wanderer Malbec (1.5lt in a box small enough to pack) 🙌

No, you have a drink in your room or buy wine from the bar.

LittleBearPad · 25/05/2025 12:46

Just buy a glass of wine if you want to but don’t bring down a box.

SquashedSquid · 25/05/2025 12:47

How... Classy. **

toomuchfaff · 25/05/2025 12:48

If youre in a communal room (not the bar) have the wine box, if it is the bar... then thats different.

Next time, an opaque, silver metal water bottle, hides the contents and keeps it cool! win win...

PinkyFlamingo · 25/05/2025 12:50

Sadly I wouldn't if it was a box, too obvious! Now wine poured into a drinks bottle on the other hand....

spirit20 · 25/05/2025 12:51

Would they let you sit in a communal area drinking alcohol that you didn't buy from them?

If you've a non-clear container (e.g. a drinking flask) and it won't be obvious that you're drinking wine, I'd say go for it.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 25/05/2025 12:54

@toomuchfaff top tips, great shout. There is a bar but also a communal space adjacent so a choice of space.

For those horrified, obvs this was intended to be light hearted - I’m not going to be doing them out of anything and have spent plenty to prop them up.

For what?!

ThinWomansBrain · 25/05/2025 13:03

Buy a glass of wine
discreetly top it up/replenish from your "water" bottle

She's on holiday! Holidays are not for abstinence and delayed gratification!

Justsayno123 · 25/05/2025 13:06

And we wonder why Brits abroad get a bad rep....

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/05/2025 13:08

Agree - buy a glass then top up from ‘water’ bottle. You’re on holiday - enjoy - and ignore the pearl clutchers, lol.

Mmm, yes, OP having one glass of wine is going to turn into antisocial Hulk…

Delatron · 25/05/2025 13:24

Nice plan! I’d probably buy a small glass from them and then secretly top it up from the decanted wine from your box in a water bottle…

CombatBarbie · 25/05/2025 13:26

I'd buy one from the bar and fill a water bottle/hydro flask from the room..... 🤣

FanofLeaves · 25/05/2025 13:33

In this situation I’ll always buy a small glass of the kind of wine I’ll be drinking then I’ll discretely top up from a chilly’s bottle. I think it’s fair to have purchased something. I also only like drinking out of glasses so I wouldn’t want to be swigging from a bottle even if no one knew I had wine in there.

Also it is definitely not to be frowned upon to be drinking daytime wine on a sunshine holiday. Totally normal! I only wait till 5 recently as otherwise it sends me to sleep as soon as I stop and I waste an afternoon. Sadly I can’t keep myself topped up throughout the day as I once would have on holiday as I have a three year old who will at some point ask me to pretend to be a megalodon in the swimming pool.

TinyTempest · 25/05/2025 13:38

I'd just go to the room and get a refill to bring back down, rather than bring the whole box.

But you know what MN is like, if you haven't been called 'Chavvy' already, it's only a matter of time 🤣

Enjoy your holiday and your wine 🍷

Teenagerantruns · 25/05/2025 13:41

Just stick it in a water bottle, this is exactly the reason l bring a metal water bottle abroad, classy l know...

Tbf it doesn’t sound like op is planning on having one, not as they want to bring the whole box down.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/05/2025 13:48

There are some handy tips here OP, enjoy your drink and your holiday 🥂 .

Alifemoreordinary123 · 25/05/2025 13:56

Thanks all - I’m in the minority but have poured my wine (in the communal area not the bar) and will enjoy it with my book. For those worried I’ll get sloshed, I promise I’ll limit it to one large glass 😉

I'm fairly certain it's not mums having a glass of wine at 2pm that gives us our bad reputation lmao, even if it is out of a box -gasp-

Whilst reading a BOOK no less. Wild 🤣 it’s hardly smashing up a shopfront in Magaluf after a litre of vodka is it.

This was definitely not obviously 'light hearted'
