To open the box of wine and crack on….

It’s 2.30pm and I’m on holiday. It’s raining outside and the kids are on their way to kids club. I’m chilling with a book in a communal space (having bought coffee and lunch from the bar). Shall I bring my box of wine down and a glass from my room and have my own party here (discreetly) or just buy their ridiculously expensive wine? For the context, this is an expensive holiday but I’m I like to look after the pennies and brought the wine for the room as there are no shops locally and so everything is very expensive resort pricing.

Also, as a tip for anyone considering the same, boxed wine is having a revolution and I brought The Wanderer Malbec (1.5lt in a box small enough to pack) 🙌

I’m trying not to rise to the suggestion of being a cheapskate but it’s hard…. I suppose we all economise in our own curious ways.

To be fair, a box of wine isn’t cheap, one we’ve cracked open was 15 quid. Then again, perhaps we are cheap.

I think being a ‘cheapskate’ is a highly desirable attribute in the current climate.

In cheapskste spirit, I’m at a cafe with my son at the moment. I’ve bought us a sandwich but only asked for tap water for him, and I have spiked that with a little concentrated squash you can buy in a tiny bottle from Aldi.

waits for ‘you give your child SQUASH???!! I hope you have a dentist on speed dial!!

For anyone else taking notes...

@MadamePeriwinkle i thought this was a targeted ad from Mumsnet then 🤣🤣🤣

Oh is it nice @Alifemoreordinary123
I have a box in the kitchen waiting to go on holiday with us tomorrow. It was a great price in Sainsbury's.
Yes to the Chilly type bottle for smuggling wine.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 25/05/2025 16:35

@FanofLeaves yes!! I brought one of those with us!

In a twist of fate (or karma) our wine blew over whilst we helped staff bring things in from outside (huge storm). The manager brought us another glass to say thank you and apologise for the wind 😆 🤦🏻‍♀️. I may well live up to the Brit abroad stereotype yet!

Although I hope the majority of the box wine survived?!

I'm fairly certain it's not mums having a glass of wine at 2pm that gives us our bad reputation lmao, even if it is out of a box -gasp-

Ha. What I actually meant was find me a women who is hiding a box of wine in her hotel room and then sneakily drinking it from a water bottle in a bar who is NOT British. Then I'll eat my hat. It's hardly the classy option is it?!

I don’t think she was hiding it in her hotel room. It’s allowed, I doubt she had to stash it in the wardrobe or anything.

Easy. My nan, in Egypt, this January. She's South African. She had three boxes of wine in her hotel room and has two hip flasks disguised as an umbrella and a pair of binoculars to sneak bevvies out in.

She also wouldn't give a hoot that some pearl clutching faux-posh on Mumsnet who can't spell doesn't think she's very classy.

You may submit footage of you eating whatever kind of hat "propa classy" women wear whenever you wish.

When you're up getting your box you could change into your PJ's as well.

So you're sorted for breakfast too 😂

Chuckling at "who can't spell" 😄.

Also, hiding hip flasks inside a brolly, you say ✍️ that's bloody genius.
