Angela Rayner set up to fail

billysboy · 25/05/2025 06:39

I can help think that Angela Rayner has been set up to fail on her housing targets
having promised to build ( not convert old offices ) 1.5m new homes by the end of her term the government seems woefully behind
for the next 4 years 370k homes will need to be built each year to achieve this as currently 225 k new homes last year

I can’t help think that she is doomed to fail without massive planning reforms and a huge social housing building programme

Oldham is going to build some flats.
Which is funny. As they've just pulled down one lot of flats just outside the centre.
You can't put families in flats. It just doesn't work well for so many reasons.
Society needs stability to create community.
We need nice houses. But we need to look at why we keep needing to build more houses.
Student migration is huge - and changes communities. And then a high percentage apparently claim asylum when their student visa is about to expire.

Oldham are building about 800 flats. Which is enough for yesterday's channel arrival number.

And then a high percentage apparently claim asylum when their student visa is about to expire

This is not true. A small percentage do. 16,000 did so in 2024. Set that against the figure of around 393,000 student visas issued in 2024.

I didn’t realise it had to be one or the other.

No it’s v important that you dig into a binary press driven narrative about everything so as to keep the division simple and the discussion

HTH. Couldn’t find an emoji for the above viewpoint

I know exactly why my posts are being removed, those on the left do not like criticism and unlike those on the right those more right-wing orientated don't report/shut down or lock up any one they disagree with or don't like.

If you don't like something leave it up and let others decide, but no that's not the left/socialist ideological way is it 😂

This is the left all over, they just want an echooooooo chamber 🙄

Edited

There have been posts disagreeing and from more right-leaning posters. They're still here

However, they weren't rude and offensive.

Give that a go.

skymagentatwo · 25/05/2025 12:19

But but Angela says we have plenty of housing, her mathematical and critical thinking skills are amazing. Hope these pleases posters I'm trying to big up her profile 😂😂😂

16,000 people still need somewhere to live (and work)

Yes, but that is not the fact I was correcting.

Doesn’t look as if they’ll be allowed to wait it out. We now have a government that’s actually governing.

New rules may take unfinished housing sites off developers https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj42wz92rl0o

Who will build them then and where will the money be coming from?

If local Councils are going to take over the sites where will they get the money from? In my area the Council started a new road infrastructure which has now been put on hold because they ran out of money.

EasyTouch · 25/05/2025 12:30

Yep. I don't think he ever apologised for his language, unlike Rayner. But people seem to forget she did so and bring up what she said every single time her name is mentioned.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59081482.amp

Nye Bevan will always be far more remembered for giving birth to the NHS and various welfare reforms that totally transformed UK society .
He was actually revolutionary and truly progressive.
If Angela manages something like he did and with the UK being in a far better position now than Bevan era post war ruin, her othering of the Tories will not be a primary association with her as well.

It's like there being a difference between an arrogant bastard being an empty vessel of people's good and bad projections ....and an arrogant bastard that backs up.their shit with tangible results.

Ms Rayner can't lace Mr Bevan's shoes. No time , nowhere, at all.
Plus the fact that political correctness was not a thing in Bevan's time as it has been for the whole of Rayner's political life.

The developers will pay. The article says:

They may also face penalties worth thousands of pounds per unbuilt home, paid directly to local planning authorities.

The idea is to encourage them to get the building done through hefty deterrents. Good. Now we need to stop them hoarding land.

bombastix · 25/05/2025 12:31

I too would like to know about the money as the inference of these powers is that transfers would be below market rate or construction companies might be footing the bill. It implies a strong possibility of nationalisation. If so, very ballsy stuff from Rayner

Of course. Yet many, many people forget all that and at the moment are happy to support Reform, a party which would undo much of Bevan's work.

BIossomtoes · 25/05/2025 12:39

I suspect if he was still alive Mr Bevan would adore Ms Rayner.

The word used is "may" so nothing definite.

bombastix · 25/05/2025 12:56

I wouldn’t be reassured on the use of the world may. What that means is that the counsel can, not an argument about if it happens…

That’s because so many ungrateful adult brats treat their parents like total shit nowadays and dress it up as ‘boundaries’.

There may be some in this camp. The ones I know it’s the parents who are entitled brats and make their dc’s lives miserable.

I know it’s not a generational thing though because many of my friends have lively parents. It’s a just some of that generation that are obnoxious, like with every generation.

Thats what I am wondering , i get the impression that the elite boys have had to have her on the team and then saddled her with an impossible task as the number of homes to be built will just keep compounding

I wonder how much PP has been granted for housing development that hasn't been built yet? In my small town, there's a site that has had PP for 400 homes for over 20 years, and no work has started. There are a few smaller sites that have PP for anything from 4 to 32 properties, so probably another 100-200 homes. If it's a similar picture across the country as a whole, that's a lot of homes that already have consent.

They could start by insisting developers actually build the homes they've got consent for and compulsorily purchase the sites if they don't. Then they can start on all the land that developers have "land banked" but won't build yet because they want to restrict supply to keep prices high.

The biggest obstacle would probably be labour availability. They could get round that by allowing unlimited immigration for construction workers, that would have the added bonus of enraging Reform supporters. 😉

They are doing compulsory purchase. In the press today.

They are also bringing in massive planning reform that will allow development on any protected habitat or with any protected species without any surveys or mitigation for a levy. Which will supposedly benefit nature on a national level. How when they don’t know what’s been lost due to no surveys I’ve no idea.

It’s absolutely horrific and will be devastating for nature.

But it likely will get houses built faster.

hartfelt · 25/05/2025 14:42

Surely the easiest solution to the housing crisis is to reduce demand by massively reducing immigration which is where the majority of new household formation/demand comes from, especially when unemployment and underemployment are at an all time high and the benefits bill is exploding.

There are never going to be enough homes built if you have excess demand of 500k plus people per year, it's just not do-able and is the elephant in the room. Eventually families will start living 5+ people to a room, paying thousands for the privilege and politicians will act like they didn't understand how this country got there. It's bonkers.

I agree, once we've lost large parts of the countryside you can't get it back, not to mention the effect it has on wildlife.

Adding to all the effects of increases in legal net migration – including some of the key drivers set out above – has been the increase in recent years in the numbers of people arriving illegally in the UK or staying illegally when they have no right to remain here, adding to the UK’s unacceptably high asylum backlog and asylum accommodation costs, From 2018-2024, 220,000 people were found to have arrived via irregular means (150,000 having crossed the Channel in small boats),10 the vast majority of whom claimed asylum. This is in addition to people who claim asylum having arrived legally in the UK on visas intended for study, work or visitor purposes, including 40,000 in 2024.
Which references:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/source-of-asylum-claims-in-2024/source-of-asylum-claims-in-2024

This is part of the problem. You can't keep letting millions in and not expect that to impact on the basics like housing and health care.

In total, 3.1 million visas were granted in 2024, allowing individuals to come to the UK to visit, work, study or join family members. This figure will exclude the large numbers of visitors who do not require a visa or ETA to travel to the UK. There have also been 1.1 million ETAs granted to visitors between the launch of the scheme (October 2023) and the end of 2024.

Me too. I’m very much hoping she’ll be Labour’s first female leader. She’s an incredibly impressive woman.

She most certainly isn't. There are numerous truly inspirational women worldwide. Angela Rayner will never be one of them.
