Neighbours sat in car for hours on end with engine running. It this weird

Names changed as could be outing

we got some new neighbours across from us about 6 months ago. A man and a women. I was talking to another neighbour and she asked if I had noticed they sit in their car for hours on end with the engine on. Now I had noticed them a few times sat in the car but though nothing if it. The car is parked outside this neighbours house a lot.

Now the neighbour has said to me DH and I have been more aware of it, especially with doing lots of work in the garden. And the fumes from the car as well have been more noticeable since we have been outside a lot. Neighbour is a bit nearer so has noticed them doing it during the day and at night as well. Usually between midnight and 6am.

Basically they sit in the car sometimes it’s the man, sometimes the women, sometimes both. The engine is running all the time (yesterday it was about 7 hours). They seem to be always on their phones and then one of them will get out go in the house and then come back out again into the car. Sometimes they will just get out of the car, walk round it and get back in.

yesterday the other neighbours husband went out and asked them to turn the engine off as his son has asthma and the car is right outside his window and was told very forcefully to mind his own fucking business.

now if it was not for the engine being on all the time I probably would just shrug and think “each to there own”. But this is very strange is it not?

Perhaps they are growing cannabis in the house but the smell is so bad they sit in the car. 😦

WitcheryDivine · 24/05/2025 08:17

We had a neighbour who did this, I was never QUITE sure why until the absolutely massive early morning drugs raid that took him and his mate away. I’m not sure whether sitting in an idling car is necessary as some part of the drug dealing process (presumably more convenient/deniable for people to pass by a car parked on the street than go into a house) or maybe he just liked sitting out there and didn’t give a fuck about others.

Print off something about the law prohibiting idling and post it through their door. If they persist, tell the police.

healthybychristmas · 24/05/2025 08:19

I am desperate to know why they are doing this!

I was maybe say a tense house but they are a couple on their own and most times they sit in the car together

Edited

And what possible need for engine running ?! So strange and annoying

They coukd be chatting about their problems or escaping someone inside the house.

But why engine running?

MyOliveHelper · 24/05/2025 08:14

No you'd be the weird one for doing that. Any reported issues should revolve around the engine. Not what they choose to do in their car and when.

Sitting in your car all night IS weird when everyone else around you is in their house in bed.

Wowse · 24/05/2025 08:26

My first thought was drugs. Growing or selling.

Oceangrey · 24/05/2025 08:27

So weird. I want the explanation.
We have a couple of dealers (I think) who sit in their cars with the lights on around here. Or I'm assuming that's the situation.

Why because we must all sleep, eat and shit at the same times? Your little world isnt THE world.

Idk. Warmth? Maybe they like the sound or the feeling they can just drive off right away. I have no idea. It would annoy me if they were my neighbours.

GRex · 24/05/2025 08:29

Work out times and fill out the form on your council website, and paste the same info into the police 101 form. Have other neighbours do the same or call up.

I'd suspect drugs. Can you see into the house windows?

Maybe engine powers UV light in the boot!

GordonRamsey · 24/05/2025 08:29

When they are not in the car, stuff a potato up the exhaust pipe. It will prevent it starting.

I think Maris Piper is best for this action and, by the way, tastier too with a couple of handfuls of Coarse Agean Sea Salt.

Warmth yes that’s likely

ClaredeBear · 24/05/2025 08:30

There’s a school close by so we have lots of parents turning up early, leaving their engines on just to keep one person warm or cool. Unlike some of the neighbours I don’t have issues with people parked outside of my house - unless they’re choking me. I ask them to cut the engine politely and they always do without me ever having to quote the law, so I’m sorry this doesn’t seem to work with your neighbours. I wonder if it would make a difference if a few of you contacted the Council? Also, whilst it seems like commons sense and respect for the environment to most, lots of people wont be aware it’s actually illegal, so it might be worth letting them know.

Sherararara · 24/05/2025 08:31

Maybe they are charging their phones.

CurlewKate · 24/05/2025 08:31

How’s the Internet? I can get 5G in my car but not in my living room. I’ve worked in my car occasionally when the WiFi’s down.

landoflostcontent · 24/05/2025 08:31

Airconditioning? Has it been warm where you live? Just a thought, not suggesting it is a good idea🙂

ThatShyRoseViper · 24/05/2025 08:33

I’ve had this exact situation. It was so irritating and antisocial.

As far as anyone could work out, the people were couriers and were paid to be in the van ‘ready’ for the next pick up for the duration of their shift but no specification where they had to wait, hence being outside home.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/05/2025 08:34

Maybe they are getting into dogging and not quite figured it out yet. 🤷‍♂️

GoodCharl · 24/05/2025 08:35

Its very odd. 7 hours? Could you report to police for a welfare check when they are actually in the car?

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/05/2025 08:35

They're spies and they think the house is bugged. The noise from the engine masks any sound picked up by bugs planted in the car.

JustMyView13 · 24/05/2025 08:41

We have the same, he’s a drug dealer.

Weefox · 24/05/2025 08:44

Weird. The car is in a public road so neighbours should get together and complain jointly. This is hazardous for the environment and for health.
