Neighbours sat in car for hours on end with engine running. It this weird

Names changed as could be outing

we got some new neighbours across from us about 6 months ago. A man and a women. I was talking to another neighbour and she asked if I had noticed they sit in their car for hours on end with the engine on. Now I had noticed them a few times sat in the car but though nothing if it. The car is parked outside this neighbours house a lot.

Now the neighbour has said to me DH and I have been more aware of it, especially with doing lots of work in the garden. And the fumes from the car as well have been more noticeable since we have been outside a lot. Neighbour is a bit nearer so has noticed them doing it during the day and at night as well. Usually between midnight and 6am.

Basically they sit in the car sometimes it’s the man, sometimes the women, sometimes both. The engine is running all the time (yesterday it was about 7 hours). They seem to be always on their phones and then one of them will get out go in the house and then come back out again into the car. Sometimes they will just get out of the car, walk round it and get back in.

yesterday the other neighbours husband went out and asked them to turn the engine off as his son has asthma and the car is right outside his window and was told very forcefully to mind his own fucking business.

now if it was not for the engine being on all the time I probably would just shrug and think “each to there own”. But this is very strange is it not?

We have often stayed in our car while DS slept. He is not a good transitioner so once out of carrier car seat we just had to stay with him or he would not nap.
But we have an EV, so I'm assuming the idling rules don't apply. Or do they? There's no emissions/smell and the noise is much less than an ICE car (there is a fan noise though). Have I been irritating the neighbours? I hope I haven't 😬

They are a public road. They have a drive but don’t use it.
my neighbour mentioned it to the community police team and was told to report to the council for pollination.

my husband has just seen someone come and get a package from the man in the car. Now I think I know what’s it’s all about.

Better wifi connection in car? Odd of hours of work, if that's what's happening.

Disgusting reaction from them to your neighbour - lowlifes.

Ask police if they'll deal with it.

I asked AI and it thinks most likely illegal activity. Going in side the house intermittently might be to check on something like drug production. Car provides an anonymous and mobile base. Defensive reaction suggests person wants to hide illicit activity.

And it really told you something that some thought in your human brain couldn't have done?

They are probably 'at work'. Definitely needs reporting.

herbalteabag · 24/05/2025 10:44

I would report the engine idling. It is quite weird but apart from the environmental consequences it's up to them.

greenishredblue · 24/05/2025 10:46

The women walked off 5 minutes ago and I am sure she has something tucked in her coat. She then returned a few minutes later.

ok it’s prob drugs but just turn your bloody engine off. I don’t get why they would want to draw attention to themselves by having the engine on. No one would have prob noticed especially at night.

Is it normal for drug dealers to have massive posh cars even though they are in a council house.

I mean I know living in a council
house does not mean you can’t have a big flash car I just wondered if a certain type of car is typical with drug dealers. Brand new flash BMW.
If anything the car is drawing attention by its make and model.

Yes. Ofc. How do you think they fund it…
And council housing means nothing.

It’s against the Highway Code to do this

Yes, also found this:
Rule 123 of The Highway Code looks at ‘The Driver and the Environment’. It states that drivers must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary on a public road.'

Is it worth you contacting the same team and saying it’s not only the pollution and noise from the idling engine that’s concerning you? It’s the unusual behaviour. If it’s referred by more than one neighbour it may be taken more seriously.

If it doesn’t bother you what they’re up to, and you only want the noise and pollution to stop, then definitely refer to council environmental health. It’s totally unacceptable to have an engine running for hours on end. No good reason.

My first thought was drugs. Growing or selling.

Same.

LemonBlueberryX · 24/05/2025 10:54

My ex would always smoke weed in his car for hours on end each day. This way he could enclose the smell. This was the main reason we broke up as he was spending so much time in his car.

It would be more unusual for a dealer not to have a brand new flash BMW.

Are you kidding? They all have BMs or Audis where I'm from.
I've got a white Audi A3, DP refers to it as my Dealermobile!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 24/05/2025 10:57

My thoughts went straight to drugs as that's how they used to act where I once lived, now the just don't care and openly deal in the street.

As you've mentioned social housing then you've also got the option of talking to the housing association as there's usually an antisocial behaviour clause in tenancies now.

They probably have a cannabis farm inside the house… are the windows darkened/foiled up? It may actually be too hot in the house if they are cooking meth or hothousing plants. Tbh I’d be calling the police to report suspicious activity…

Or an Audi or Range Rover, preferably Gary’d up to the max.

EleanorRavenclaw · 24/05/2025 11:10

The car is quite likely leased. You can pay over the odds for a flash car as the finance checks can be pretty non existent ie as long as you make payments the source income is irrelevant. My cousin ran a car lease business and stopped because he was sick of the cars getting wrecked.
Sounds like they’ve moved to a quiet neighbourhood to try and be a bit incognito not realising they’ve done the exact opposite.

Wtafdidido · 24/05/2025 11:16

I wonder has their electric been disconnected and they use the car for warmth music and to charge phones etc?

CloserNotGone · 24/05/2025 11:17

OP thinks it’s drug dealing, it needs to be reported to the police

Too many people are afraid to report this because of repercussions.

Everyone needs to report anonymously, or we are all complicit in drugs to the detriment of everyone in society.

I don’t agree with reporting people for minor offences, I don’t want to live in a police state, but drugs are seriously damaging

Mardychum · 24/05/2025 11:20

One of my neighbours used to do this. The endless engine noise drove me up the wall and I couldn’t open windows at the front of the house. It’s so selfish. Either drive off or switch the engine off, dickheads!!!

AtLast01 · 24/05/2025 11:20

I was going to say, when do they sleep? But from what you say, it’s probably drugs so they are not leading a normal lifestyle.

Mardychum · 24/05/2025 11:22

Oh drugs is it? So even more of a pair of losers.

Puppypeewee · 24/05/2025 11:22

We bought an ex council house years ago. Loved it. Neighbour was a drug dealer. Didn’t know that till we moved in. She dealt drugs. She also had a new bmw, didn’t work except dealing. . Bloody awful. Luckily after two years we were In the position to move .was a shame as I loved the house not the drug dealings.
