Mines matcha - looks nasty

Previously sweet potato fries but they've kinda died out now

I love an Aperol spritz 🤣 my go to in the summer.

coconut water is awful, the weirdest texture and flavour.

Coconut water fresh from the car count is lovely though.

I actually do love that!

Me too.

It had completely passed me by until we had a family holiday in Italy. Tried it as an early evening drink served with a few salty snacks. Ended up bringing home loads of bottles of the local brand as so much cheaper than Aperol.

Only like it on a hot day though.

Ha ha this thread is so funny with people saying stuff like “I don’t follow trends”

But is anyone actually eating and pretending to like things they don't because it's 'on trend'?

Surely people become aware of something (maybe because of a trend) and try it. If they like it, they continue eating it and if they don't, they don't.

I don't believe anyone is actually forcing themselves to eat food they don't like so people must just like things they've tried. Surely...

I agree. This thread is tiresome. It's fine to not like things. Mumsnet seems to love to give itself a pat on the pay for somehow thinking they are outing all that's disingenuous. Hint – liking an Aperol Spritz is not it. Trends have existed since humans have.

It's just a lighthearted moan at the state of the world 😄😄

Those colour sharing boards, where everyone brings food of a certain colour - why? Seems like you just end up with tons of absolute crap snacks, no "real" food just junk.

Also I never believe people really enjoy most Michelin star restaurant type food - mostly looks like tiny portions of weird stuff covered in foam, for 5x the price of a normal meal. Pretentious shite

Why do people ruin lighthearted chit chatty threads?

I might start a thread on this. It will be dead serious.

No tongue in cheek comments allowed, I will be reporting anyone with a dry sense of humour. (probably will struggle to make it into double figures)

The first two I think of them as medicine

You are absolutely right, in the Western diet they are medicines, not food.

I'm dubious about the love of cottage cheese on social media.

Many decades ago I used to like cottage cheese (there were some lovely flavours). Made the mistake of buying some recently and instead of the decent sized separate curds it used to be, it was a tub full of mush. Ugh

soupyspoon · 24/05/2025 09:56

Talking of medicinal things, the reason Italy, among other countries, have 'bitters' is because some of their diet is made up of bitter leaves and aromats and bitter herbs and seeds etc is because its good for digestion. Sometime we're not particularly good at in the UK

So I always feel suitably healthed up after several Camparis.

LindtCurves · 24/05/2025 09:57

Old trend but... Cupcakes!

Just why? I think people just buy them becaus they look pretty but the topping tastes far too rich and sugary, and underneath is just... standard sponge?!

Olives……….green or black…….YUK! What is so appealing about them?

OMG, I LOVE olives! Preferably the really bitter green ones. They pucker your mouth but as so salty and savoury. But the black ones will do too.

It's the intensity of the umami flavour for me. Even nicer when mixed in with some feta and tiny pickled onions.

LowDownBoyStandUpGuy · 24/05/2025 10:05

Dubai chocolate for me, it’s ’viral’ and ‘selling out everywhere’ apparently but why? It’s rank and it looks like someone has smooshed up grass and shoved it inside some chocolate.

I don’t mind some cottage cheese on a baked potato but didn’t know it was currently a trendy food but might explain why Tesco keep selling out, I did think it was weird.

You've had gildas I take it?

When I was on slimming world I made cottage cheese pancakes. And they are actually bloody lovely 🤣

No, but I've just looked them up and NEED them. The addition of whole anchovies! I'd disappear into my puckered little mouth from overdoing the saltiness.

The best ones I have ever had were in a wine bar in Madrid, we go to quite often. Never had them like that anywhere else. In oil, thick good quality oil

Kale in whatever form ( raw/air fried etc) it's bland and inedible. You may as well be a cow munching on grass in a field 😳

IIRC it used to be seen/grown as cattle feed!

Spanish picky bits (aka tapas) are the best. I had roasted small green (quite bitter but delish) peppers swimming in oil, with crusty bread.

Need a hol now.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 24/05/2025 10:25

I genuinely like most of the things mentioned on here. Not sure why you think people are pretending

Squirrelblanket · 23/05/2025 21:25

Sourdough toast. It tastes ok but every time I've had it, I've been worried about breaking my teeth. It's hard!!!

It’s probably overtoasted. It doesn’t need to be as toasted as much as regular bread.

mickandrorty · 24/05/2025 10:30

Dubai chocolate was awful i was so annoyed I spent money on it.
I do really like matcha tea but I buy strawberry and chocolate flavours, use full fat frothed milk to make it, then tell myself I'm having a nice healthy drink.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 24/05/2025 10:43

I'm good with kale, cottage cheese and sourdough (although much better toasted).

Sweet potatoes and aperol can do one.

The teen DC are very into their bubble tea and matchas - I am not keen.

gannett · 24/05/2025 10:53

I tend not to assume that people are just pretending to like things just because I don't like those things. Everyone has different tastes, I'm surprised that penny hasn't dropped for the OP.

Food trends are just a bunch of people discovering something they hadn't heard of before. I can roll my eyes at the idea that pistachios and tahini are on trend in 2025, having enjoyed both for decades, but I also remember how excited I was to discover sushi as a 19-year-old. Young people getting excited about discovering things they like is adorable, imo.

FWIW I love sourdough, could eat avocadoes til the end of time, not a fan of aperol, don't really get bubble tea, absolutely love a twiddly foamy Michelin tasting menu (but I am a pretentious person who likes to think Food can be Art). Yet to try Dubai chocolate - the kataifi seems like a genius idea but the milk chocolate version seems like it'd be too sickly sweet. Would love a dark choc version.

TheAmusedQuail · 24/05/2025 11:01

@gannett I once went to a super fancy restaurant (I wasn't paying the bill) that had loads of tiny courses. Wood ear mushrooms. Truffle. I loved it! None of the courses were to fill you up, but in combination, it was a whole meal.

In contrast, another super fancy place with wagu beef. Totally underwhelming.

Tagyoureit · 24/05/2025 11:08

I haven't tried the green chocolate, it doesn't look appealing.

Bubble tea just seems like a massive choking hazard to me. And those bubbles just remind me of those bath pearls you used to get in The Body Shop so it seems wrong to eat/drink those!!

I keep buying cottage cheese but then never get brave enough to actually try to it but would like to up my protein and there are lots of recipes to try. But I do keep thinking of ryvita and cottage cheese which just doesn't look appealing.

I like avocado, on toast with ham or bacon topped with runny fried eggs, coriander and chilli flakes! It's the best brunch!! But I hate how fickle avocados are, like they only ripen on the 3rd Sunday of the month when the moon is in Virgo at 2.56am so by the time you actually want to eat it, its gone brown!

I'm partial to a G&T but didn't really like the phase of massive glasses turning up looking like they're auditioning for a place at the royal Chelsea garden show!! I don't want the gin drowned!

Kale, just no!!

Coffee machine coffee, it's not ever hot enough! Quite happy with my instant coffee.

Non alcoholic spirits, you've just paid £20 for what is cordial! Why?
