Does it need 6 mums with pushchairs go into a shop to buy one item between them?

I went to a different supermarket to buy a few items as my usual place had these either out of stock or a rubbish date on them.

This group of mums with a pushchair went around in the group. Then at self scans, the area is very narrow. They were clogging up the area and didn’t like it if anyone said excuse me to them. The whole group bought just one item between them all - a box of tissues. The staff member at the self scans said to me they do this daily.

Why can’t the mums that are not buying stuff leave before going to the self scans?

For the company and something to do it suppose.

Unless it's a new joke like, how many MumsNetters does it take to change a light bulb?

Jubaju · 23/05/2025 12:45

Sounds like a shoplifting scam if they do it everyday 😐

mondaytosunday · 23/05/2025 12:45

Guess it’s be one part of their daily routine. As for not liking it if someone wants to get by - tough. I would not hesitate one millisecond in telling them that they are blocking the way (which staff should do).

HA!

MyUmberSeal · 23/05/2025 12:46

Mums with prams and buggies have a pact mentality. Hell befalls anyone who gets in their way.

Strawberriesforever · 23/05/2025 12:46

This is not work getting annoyed about. If they are only blocking up the self checkout for the time it takes for 1 box of tissues to be purchased then it’s going to be a very short-lived frustration anyway.

StMarie4me · 23/05/2025 12:47

How dare they go publicly to a public place and inconvenience you.

Are you also someone who means about Old People and how they dare be in shops when you’re in a hurry?

So yes, you are being very unreasonable.

Mylegishangingoff · 23/05/2025 12:47

It can't possibly take very long to scan and pay for 2 item. They would have been clogging up the place for 2 mins at most. Live and let live I reckon.

Senzaunadonna · 23/05/2025 12:52

They sound annoying, OP. There is literally no need for them all to go to the self scan area. They sound very entitled and obnoxious. It would really wind me up!

ExceedinglyCharacteristic · 23/05/2025 12:55

Honestly, OP. Why can’t old people just stand outside in the car park with their Zimmer frames and jist give their money to the sprightliest one to do the collective shop? Why can’t people who know one another be forbidden to talk and block the frozen food aisle? Why can’t parents only shop when the other parent is home with the children, to prevent children from clogging up the tills and standing up in trolleys? Why can’t people be measured and their speed tested at the door and the slowest and bulkiest refused entry? Why can’t you buy private solo supermarket access?

Redpeach · 23/05/2025 12:55

It's annoying but im sure you weren't delayed for too long

andtheworldrollson · 23/05/2025 12:58

6 people buying one item will take far longer than one person because they will be chatting and ignoring the world around them not focussed on the activity in hand

SusanLittle76 · 23/05/2025 13:00

I suggest you start a petition to ask the shop to limit buggies to two at a time.

It's completely inconsiderate to take up that much space!

I mean this actually sounds like an excellent idea.

SnowyPetals · 23/05/2025 13:08

I can't get worked up about who is in the supermarket or how efficient their shopping is. As long as people aren't being rude or abusive, it's just part and parcel of being in a public place. Sometimes other people are temporarily in your way, some take longer than you would like to load their bags and some shop with friends. Supermarket shopping isn't a laser-focus activity.

Unicornmama12 · 23/05/2025 13:09

Sorry but I agree with OP. Absolute madness to take 6 mums and pushchairs into a shop for one of them to buy a box of tissues. If I’ve been out with friends and they need something I always say “I’ll wait outside” with my pram whilst they go in. People are inconsiderate and although they’re not doing anything illegal… just why?

Just one, but expect a 300 post long thread about whether changing it is reinforcing outdated gender roles or whether the OP is being unreasonable for expecting her DH to do it and side argument about Brexit.

🤣😂👆

colonialwomanonthewing · 23/05/2025 13:17

Five people unnecessarily going into the shop when they're accompanied by large items that will block other shoppers is unreasonable. A person who needs to go into the shop themselves is not unreasonable, regardless of whether they are slow. Comparing five unnecessary prams with a one or two slower people is ridiculous.

mindutopia · 23/05/2025 13:19

I would totally suspect shoplifting too. 😂 I wonder if it’s the sort of store that alarms things like formula. Who would argue with a mum with a tub of aptamil in her changing bag unless you had airtight cctv proof and some of them are very slick.

Redpeach · 23/05/2025 13:21

Maybe they were all going to buy something and then changed their minds

I was watching ‘Caught Red Handed’ a few weeks ago, and the shit that can be pilfered and shoved into all crevices of a pram, is wild 🤣

I suggest you start a petition to ask the shop to limit buggies to two at a time.

And each buggy owner has to say what they’re going to buy to decide if it’s significant enough for them to be allowed entry. If whatever it is is out of stock, they are then escorted firmly to the door in case they start browsing and inconveniencing other shoppers.
