Does it need 6 mums with pushchairs go into a shop to buy one item between them?

I went to a different supermarket to buy a few items as my usual place had these either out of stock or a rubbish date on them.

This group of mums with a pushchair went around in the group. Then at self scans, the area is very narrow. They were clogging up the area and didn’t like it if anyone said excuse me to them. The whole group bought just one item between them all - a box of tissues. The staff member at the self scans said to me they do this daily.

Why can’t the mums that are not buying stuff leave before going to the self scans?

Just one, but expect a 300 post long thread about whether changing it is reinforcing outdated gender roles or whether the OP is being unreasonable for expecting her DH to do it and side argument about Brexit.

You so right 😂😂

6 people buying one item will take far longer than one person because they will be chatting and ignoring the world around them not focussed on the activity in hand

Plus they may make it difficult for other people to access the other self checkouts. There’s not usually massive amounts of space in these places.

A few minutes hold up is not that bad

I was watching ‘Caught Red Handed’ a few weeks ago, and the shit that can be pilfered and shoved into all crevices of a pram, is wild 🤣

I assume this is why small valuable items are often in plastic boxes or have security tags attached.

It’s bad if there are checkouts free and people can’t access them because there are buggies in the way.

Yeah but all part of modern life, again, a minute or two delay is all

Correct. Though also include 200 posters also arguing about:

  • whether it's environmental friendly to have light bulbs,
  • the price of light bulbs
  • be incandescent (😃) with rage about how light bulbs have changed.

I always work on the basis that at least half of the people with prams have had no sleep in a long time so treat all interactions/ judgements of reactions/ responses as if they’re operating on a very basic level. Some may just be awful people, but there were many times I was totally in the way without realising or did something thoughtless - or said excuse me way too late when they were out of earshot or just forgot to speak - so I cut everyone some slack.

Koalafan · 23/05/2025 13:51

Entitled and pointless.

Groundhedgehogday · 23/05/2025 13:52

Maybe they were all too busy on their phones and didn't notice they were in the middle of the self service check out. Mums these days.

Coffeeishot · 23/05/2025 13:57

MightAsWellBeGretel · 23/05/2025 13:03

It's completely inconsiderate to take up that much space!

Is it though no more space than 2 large trollies and online shoppers carts, these people with prams are entitled to space !

Nurseryquestions86 · 23/05/2025 13:58

It wasn't until I joined MN that I realised there are rules about what public places certain people are allowed to be in. Multiple Mums with push chairs not allowed in Supermarkets shall be added to the list.

But the people with trolleys and carts are actually shopping. 5 out of the six mums with buggies are not.

comeandhaveteawithme · 23/05/2025 14:04

What annoys me is when they all walk side by side along a pavement, three or four abreast, and don't move into single file when someone is coming towards them.

andtheworldrollson · 23/05/2025 14:08

It’s not “rules about use of space “ - it’s about not putting yourself way ahead of anyone else

dont take all the space - share it nicely
don’t waste other peoples time - get out of their way when you can
remember that other people count just as much as you do
if everyone acts like a prick the world falls apart quite quickly - when only a few act like a prick people post grumpy posts on MN

How dare they go publicly to a public place and inconvenience you.

Are you also someone who means about Old People and how they dare be in shops when you’re in a hurry?

So yes, you are being very unreasonable.

OP didn’t say they shouldn’t be in the supermarket? She asked if they all need to be at the checkout together when the space is tight and when only one of them is purchasing one item. Odd that they can’t separate for that. Entirely different to being around elderly shoppers.

comeandhaveteawithme · 23/05/2025 14:14

It's quite odd behaviour that they can't be apart for a couple of minutes while one of them is buying something. Are they very young mums?

I would naturally walk through the self checkout and stand out of the way if I was in a group of more than two and only one of us was purchasing, pushchair or not.

Yes absolutely this.

Back when I used to walk DD to primary school I would often meet a couple of mums with prams/pushchairs, always walking beside each other talking and paying no attention to anyone else using the pavement. If I met them when I was coming away from school, so it was just me, I usually stepped in to the road to go past. But if I still had DD with me then I thought the hell am I going to have my 5 year old walk in to the road because they had neither the good sense or good manners to go single file. So we would hold our course until they suddenly realised and made room for us.

wizzywig · 23/05/2025 14:30

Bet they'll stand as a group at the school gates for an hour or so after their kids have gone in.

Exactly, I battle and struggle with Parkinson’s, people rushing around me doesn’t always help, I try not to be in the way!

You are minimizing the thoughtlessness of the 6 mums with prams.
