Where can we go?
husband , me and 3 teens who are sporty and active.

We like mountains, sea swimming, lake swimming, hiking, biking , eating out. I mean we arent fanatical hikers or anything but also we wouldn't sit at a pool all week or get dressed for dinner!
We would have a car to get out and about to see stuff.

Not really into resorty resorts with night life etc, but like a town with cafes and stuff to see.
Enjoyed Lake Annecy area last year..

Ideas? Somewhere that would never have occurred to me?

Maderia is fab for hiking, really beautiful, incredible food and drink.

WestwardHo1 · 21/05/2025 10:59

The Pyrenees

I really like Majorca, around Port de Pollença in the east of the island. There’s some great walking and cycling out to Cap de Formenter and up into Sa Calobra and Coll de Femenia. Lots of little towns and vineyards a drive away. It’s really just an “easy” sort of destination - affordable to get to and stay in, good weather without being too hot, and you can pick and choose whether you want to be active, a bit more sedate, or have a beach day.

Stompythedinosaur · 21/05/2025 11:02

Not sure what your budget is. Costa Rica was an amazing place to go, and a very active holiday. There was also a lot to do in Roveneimi in Finland, if you'd consider a colder holiday.

Hibernatingtilspring · 21/05/2025 11:02

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia, if you have an airport nearby that flies there. Beautiful place but a lot cheaper than Italian lakes!

MumChp · 21/05/2025 11:02

Austria

Doseofreality · 21/05/2025 11:03

Pollensa Old Tiwn in Majorca.

Lmnop22 · 21/05/2025 11:04

Is long haul a possibility?

If so, I say Japan. Its got everything, is very easily accessible on the fast trains and can be an active city based Tokyo visit or a coastal sporty holiday or both depending on where you go

MissFritton65 · 21/05/2025 11:06

Italian lakes?

Imicola · 21/05/2025 11:09

Slovenia? Very beautiful and plenty of outdoor activities, e.g. around lake Bled.

minipie · 21/05/2025 11:12

Morzine or Samoens

Slovenia - Lake Bled or Bohinj

Pyrenees

MoreChocPls · 21/05/2025 11:12

Arizona, California, Denver…..

Arizona, California, Denver…..

I’d agree with all of these, and add Michigan which is one of my favourite places in the world. Though I think the US wilderness really needs to be experienced as a longer road trip adventure to be appreciated and to get a sense of how different every state is in its geography and culture, which is possibly more difficult as a family holiday.

MagellanicPenguin · 21/05/2025 11:17

Azores or Austria

Havanananana · 21/05/2025 11:19

Austria! e.g. Zell am See, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Wolfgansee and the Salzkammergut lake district... and about 100 other places.

Cyclebabble · 21/05/2025 11:19

Solvenia. Head for Bovec. It has great outdoor sports and the longest zip wire in Europe. It also has spectacular white water rafting. Food is also good with both local style and a heavily leaning to Italian.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 21/05/2025 11:21

how old are the teenagers? my teens would kill me it if i made them do that. i find it fascinating how different families and people are

JDM625 · 21/05/2025 11:24

What time of the year are you going?

-Many Italian ski resorts I've been to (likely other countries too) have lots to do in the summer time
-Nepal? Friends took their young children there and did a few days of hiking. They absolutely loved it.

meatbawls · 21/05/2025 11:24

Another vote for Slovenia (disclaimer, haven't been there but it's on my list for the type of holiday you want)

Appleblum · 21/05/2025 11:25

Bali

Two 16 year old girls and one 13 year old girl!

We live in an out doorsy place so its just what they are used to. They don't own a dress / skirt or a stitch of teen fashion between them! Just not interested. leggings or nothing! They are sporty and like to be doing stuff, I dont think they would last 5 minutes sitting at a pool !

Loving the suggestions! We have been to Malloraca a few times, stayed in Soller, Port de soller and Fortnalux. Just trying to think of similar but different!

It would need to be Europe due to budget. Currently trawling accomodation in the Slovenia suggestions!

All my favourite holidays have been places would never have thought of if somebody hadn't suggested them, hence my post!

Levi in Lapland was amazing! We went March so it was snowy but they have lots of summer activities too

SpanielLover2023 · 21/05/2025 12:28

@Smallsalt I was thinking about suggesting Port de Soller as we have similar likes as family and we are going there at the end of August. But I see you have already been, any recommendations for things to do or see? Tahnks.

Smallsalt · 21/05/2025 12:55

@SpanielLover2023 Its a fairly quiet laid back place but a nice little beach and cafes. A mini railway with open carriages runs between the port and the town of Soller which is a bit bigger with a nice town square with pubs and cafes. Fornalutx is a mountain village nearby which is stunning. No cars so you have to walk in to the village with its tiny streets.
Its a good base for that part of Mallorca which is the most mountainous and dramatic.
