Where can we go?
husband , me and 3 teens who are sporty and active.

We like mountains, sea swimming, lake swimming, hiking, biking , eating out. I mean we arent fanatical hikers or anything but also we wouldn't sit at a pool all week or get dressed for dinner!
We would have a car to get out and about to see stuff.

Not really into resorty resorts with night life etc, but like a town with cafes and stuff to see.
Enjoyed Lake Annecy area last year..

Ideas? Somewhere that would never have occurred to me?

Slovenia but try Kranska Gora. Lake Bled is insufferable busy.

Mummydoctor · 21/05/2025 13:00

We have two active teens (boys) and last year we spent a week in a gorgeous hotel in Seefeld Austria then drove across to stay for another week in Grindelwald in the Swiss Alps. So much to see and do in both destinations and we all loved it!

Ask the kids what they think. You don't necessarily have to do what they suggest but they may have something left field e.g.they might say Maldives so you can think "beach" or if they say Didneyland you might compromise and do a few days of that alongside a more outdoorsy holiday in France.

I was going to say Annecy before i read you'd been there. I'd go to Austria - Zell am See

Two 16 year old girls and one 13 year old girl!

We live in an out doorsy place so its just what they are used to. They don't own a dress / skirt or a stitch of teen fashion between them! Just not interested. leggings or nothing! They are sporty and like to be doing stuff, I dont think they would last 5 minutes sitting at a pool !

They sound great, i saw a post the other day from
a fb friend her 15 year old was helping in the allotments at 5am on a saturday. i was in awe apparently this kid gets up every day at 5, showers, makes her own breakfast and does chores. Im lucky if mine are out of bed at 9. both my girls are terribly hormonal and moody they are 15 and 17, they like pools but only if they have death defying slides and whatnot

Corsica

FrogsLoveRain · 21/05/2025 13:08

I'm amazed no one has suggested a nudist resort as you "don't get dressed for dinner"! 😉 haha

Plenty to do near the Italian lakes, Switzerland, madeira. Loads of other great suggestions here.

Have fun OP

Cape Town. It has everything you want and more! Lovely scenery and mountains, sea, bike rides, cafes and bars in different areas. Easy to do on a budget too. Much cheaper than people think!

DottyV · 21/05/2025 13:09

100% Austria! It has everything you're looking for and is utterly gorgeous

Doitrightnow · 21/05/2025 13:18

What time of year? Morroco has stunning hiking around somewhere like Imlil, you could go to the desert and sandboard, and kite surfing and water sports around Essaouira. But would be unbearably hot in August.

Otherwise, I agree with pps that Madeira, South Africa (I loved Drakensberg), Costa Rica and Austria are all stunning. As is Switzerland.

We spent a week in Hinterglemm, Austria last year and it ended up being one of my favourite holidays of all time. Beautiful views and lots to do! Look at the Joker card included with some accommodation which gives you the cable cars and various attractions free or discounted. Highly recommend the Rosentalerhof hotel

Lmnop22 · 21/05/2025 13:25

I recently took my kids to Iceland and highly recommend. It’s outdoorsy and there’s loads to do and see in the Golden Circle - volcanoes, geysers, glaciers etc.

And in Reykjavík there are loads of good museums, whale watching tours, food options

@Mummydoctor how busy / touristy were Seefeld and Grindelwald? They’re on our maybe list for next summer, but keen to avoid the Insta-crowds…

flyoverstate · 21/05/2025 13:28

Costa Rica, The national parks in the USA, Arizona, Utah or Alaska.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/05/2025 13:30

I love the soller and pollensa areas in Majorca too - have also enjoyed Zell am Zee , Garmisch ( Bavaria) - ( it’s easy into Innsbruck too ) krakow and Zakopane in Poland are a very good ‘combo’ too - as both city and mountains, lake swimming, lots of hiking - we also went to Auschwitz from Krakow- depressing I know but it is something that stays with you and I would say your girls are the right age to be aware. It’s also quite a reasonable holiday to do cash wise without scrimping, suprisingly excellent food too . We’ve actually done that combo twice -

Callisto1 · 21/05/2025 13:32

Another suggestion for something Alpine, so Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland or northern Italy. You can do mountains, rafting swim in lakes and even pop down to the sea if you have a car. It’s good for outdoorsy holidays with older kids. There’s also plenty of cultural stuff to see if you fancy it.

Doitrightnow · 21/05/2025 13:53

The Ardeche is gorgeous too.

Mummydoctor · 21/05/2025 21:45

@HerbertVonDoodlebug Seefeld was a great base to explore the area. Where we stayed in the town didn’t feel super busy or touristy, as we were out and about most days or were relaxing in the spa hotel. When we went for walks in the evening, the town had a lovely feel to it and wasn’t overly busy but had a few nice bars and restaurants to visit. Our favourites were swimming/pedalling around the lake, paragliding, outdoor activity lake, hiking along a gorge and also up a mountain.

we stayed in an apartment on the edge of Grindelwald town, which was lovely and quiet. The town itself was a short bus ride away and was bustling in the day. Again, there are so many places to visit from there, with super easy public transport to cover a large area. Our highlights - Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald First, several cable car trips with spectacular views.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/05/2025 22:02

@Mummydoctor I’ve stayed in both those- both excellent - I loved the swim in/out public pool in seefeld and the teepee camp slightly up the mountain in Grindlwald if it’s still there -my h and son ( who was 9 at the time) loved the long toboggan run

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/05/2025 22:04

The hills above Provence?

MiddleAgedDread · 21/05/2025 22:05

Neilsons beach club, mark Warner resort or club La Santa. Everyone can do their own activities or whatever they fancy and no one needs to be dressed up for dinner.
