To think it’s actually really unfair to be charged for bank holidays at nursery?

And no, I’m not going to complain about it because I don’t want anyone to think I begrudge the staff a day off. I don’t. But I do resent paying for a service I’m not receiving.

The thing is, when the nursery is closed there are no food costs or electric costs or even wear and tear.

Our nursery is a fairly successful local chain, with five nurseries in the county and another opening soon. It isn’t a struggling small business and could easily afford to pay staff for bank holidays without charging Mondays children for a day they aren’t going.

I know why you may think it is unfair, but I think it is unfair to assume any company could afford to pay the wages, employers NI and pensions for 8 bank holidays a year, for every member of staff in every nursery they own.
No matter how successful you see them, how would you expect them to fund that. They would have to factor it in to nursery fees or food costs, and parent's would pay it that way.

It's a frustrating situation, especially when nursery costs are so high.

Not really but if that’s how you want to interpret it then there’s not a lot I can do about it.

You could try explaining.

You managed to articulate the problem as you see it pretty well, just not why their approach is reasonable, given the impact on customers. Since this is a thread about the fairness of the charges, that is critical to any position.

But the same could be said for any business surely? Why are nurseries the exception?

Its totally unfair. I'm adopting at the moment at this has reminded me to never book them in for nursery on Mondays 👍

@Fruitbat99 I think plenty of nurseries will not do it like this. It's still a good idea to avoid working Mondays though - typically you get to use more of your leave flexibly instead of having to use up leave allowance on bank holidays Mondays. Also if you are in a job where you need to work bank hols it can be a pain as PP said. Though for some it works ok - DH can take the kids that day and you save a little on childcare across the year.

I have issues with this concept too, and for that reason child doesn't go on Mondays which is slightly inconvenient.

It would be fairer for all days to include the cost of Mondays rather than Monday kids to bear the cost. I guess they do to some extent.

Love our nursery, they are great with kiddo.
Staff deserve time off but it's very tricky if your own job covers BH and weekends.

Do you get paid for bank holidays?

Is she the staffs employer?
Do you pay waiting staff at a restaurant you frequent their bank holidays ? Tesco checkout ? The postman?

Do you get paid for bank holidays?

Yes. So I wouldn’t begrudge paying a childminder.

My clients don’t pay my employer for the days I don’t work though, they just charge enough to cover bank holiday and annual leave. It would be more reasonable for nurseries to do this, as it’s what most businesses do.
