Grab. Ugh.

AIBU to really dislike the way that 'grab' has become an acceptable verb, when it's an actually quite an aggressive action.

Today, I've heard
"Gonna grab a coffee"
"Grabbin me bag"
"Just stopped to grab some food".

Ugh.

It’s literally not that deep!

Ilikewinter · 19/05/2025 20:29

Ok

UnsocialMedia · 19/05/2025 20:30

I hate it too. But I also hate ‘pop’.

AndImBrit · 19/05/2025 20:31

Is it aggressive? Even babies grab things.

If I wanted to show aggression I’d say snatch.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/05/2025 20:32

The English language is constantly evolving and this is an example of that.

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/05/2025 20:33

😂

Pigtailsandall · 19/05/2025 20:35

It's very American. I don't particularly hate it.

I do find it cringy when people call things "bits" though. Like "getting few bits from Sainsbury's" or "getting few new bits for summer". I find it twee (but I am north American so prob why)

Edited typos

Obviously it's not literally deep.

Add misuse of "literally" to the list!

I absolutely loathe it. 100% with you, OP.

knittasgonna · 19/05/2025 20:37

There are many popular modern word choices and slang terms that annoy me, but this isn't one of them. This is where we're supposed to say that the world would be dull if we all thought the same way, but honestly, maybe it would be nicer if we did all agree!

It’s not as hideous as ‘can I get’ Ergh.

Snickersnack1 · 19/05/2025 20:39

YANBU.

Also. While we’re on words that seem to be in vogue, anyone else notice the increase of the word ‘litigate’ instead of ‘argue’.
Usually by the sort of people who say ‘utilise’ instead of ‘use’.

Annoying.

GreenCandleWax · 19/05/2025 20:43

Awful but so is "gotten".😔

NoraLuka · 19/05/2025 20:47

Adults using grab sounds kind of weird, it sounds like something a toddler would do.

Also dislike language instead of text or copy. As in ‘I’ve prepared the language for the press release’.

Actually add the whole line “it’s literally not that deep” - urgh I hate when people indiscriminately use it to sort of passive aggressively shut down a counter argument to something they may have said in which you’ve found a flaw - aargh! 😅

"I hate when..." can also be added to the list.

"I hate it when..." is perfectly acceptable.

All influencers (sheep) have now started to use ‘fit’ instead of outfit, so I suppose everyone will now also be using that….some people are such easily influenced idiots

Also I also absolutely detest when people say ‘my bad’ !!!

I use "grab" quite often myself so to me it's normal but I agree with "gotten". I can't explain why, I just hate the term

Here's a new one, work email related.

The person writes "please receive this invitation to meeting......" or "please receive these documents regarding....."

I mean, honestly 🙄

I hate ‘you can just go ahead and…’ when people are talking about the next step, especially when they use it for every single instruction. Go ahead and this, go ahead and that. 🤯

ZiggyZowie · 19/05/2025 21:16

I'm gonna grab a lipstick to add a pop of colour and get some bits at the shop

I always say this 😂

My mum says ‘I’ll take the salmon’ for example. I really hate that
