Grab. Ugh.

AIBU to really dislike the way that 'grab' has become an acceptable verb, when it's an actually quite an aggressive action.

Today, I've heard
"Gonna grab a coffee"
"Grabbin me bag"
"Just stopped to grab some food".

Ugh.

When people say " I brought a new top "

No you didn't

You bought a new top

TomatoSandwiches · 19/05/2025 21:27

Unfortunately I saw this post after I decided to nip down the road, pop in the shop and grab some bits for tomorrow.

Apologies.

I don’t get this. I’m not from the UK, but why is it that you can replace bought with brought? Or should of? It truly hurts my head. It’s just wrong.

Picky bits?

Bbq1 · 19/05/2025 21:32

I've seen something on Instagram which is blowing my mind. There are people on there who instead of saying somebody was killed are saying that they were "unalived" 😤I mean it's not even an actual word...

Naturally 😇

It's because the words killed, murdered, etc are banned and are likely to get the post taken down.

Snowflakes is a real word though?

Ah of course. It does sound stupid though.

Obviously it's not literally deep.

Add misuse of "literally" to the list!

I mind "literally"

It not being a word is the point. Since it’s not an actual word it won’t get you banned from TikTok the way that saying “killed” might.

Instagram is American and doesn’t have the same censorship as TikTok but I think it’s habit for some now.

MissMashed · 19/05/2025 21:47

Agree with all the irritating phrases and words mentioned here.

Also, when people talk about food prep, they ‘chuck’ or ‘stick’ ingredients in the slow cooker. As opposed to putting them in.

DyslexicPoster · 19/05/2025 21:51

It's times like this I'm glad I'm dyslexic.

I know what it means so I can't get upset. Also I'm not from the socio economic group background that speaks queen's English. I'm more Cat Slater than the Queen.

OP you'd be horrified by my enunciation and regional slang 😅

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 19/05/2025 21:52

'Grab' doesn't bother me, but a few of the examples on here annoy me.

'Unalived' makes me scream inside my head. What a stupid (fake) word.

And 'it's giving' ... Woman has pretty feminine dress... 'It's giving 1950s.' Man has a cool 1980s haircut and suit ... 'it's giving David Bowie.' ARGH! Angry

'Team work makes the dream work!' URGH!

'Blue sky thinking.' EWWW!

'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!' ARGH!

Arcticlife · 19/05/2025 21:54

Can I add "rolls around" with regards to time. For example "So then Monday rolls around and Denis still hadn't taken the bins in".

TortolaParadise · 19/05/2025 22:00

I don't mind ;grab'. I love 'knock yourself out'. I detest when these words - horrendous, traumatising, triggering, horrific & shocking are used to describe mundane occurrences.

Bbq1 · 19/05/2025 22:02

Ah, okay but it sounds absolutely ridiculous.

bought is past tense of buy

brought is past tense of bring

they are not the same thing and can’t be used interchangeably b it sound so similar so get mixed up all the time

GreenCandleWax · 19/05/2025 20:43

Awful but so is "gotten".😔

Gotten is a standard term, being disparaging about that usually comes from either ignorance or snobbery.

Don’t forget ‘bung’, in that context, too.

I cannot imagine being wound up enough by something so trivial that I have to post about it on the internet.

Just let people say what they want. You know what they mean, this is a you issue not a them issue

That's a bit harsh. People are entitled to feel annoyed by certain words, that's what the thread is about. It's nothing personal! I can't stand hearing the word 'jag' being used for 'jab,' but some people say it (particularly in Scotland) and that's their right. Equally I have the right to not like it/get irked by it. Doesn't mean I dislike the Scottish!
