To think chat GPT is better than some 'real' therapists?

I'm not affiliated in any way, promise! Just really, really impressed.

That app has done more for me than any amount of CBT has.

Incredible.

Agree, I need proper talking therapy, not CBT. I understand the thoughts, feelings, words cycle etc. but need someone to offload to who offers support and advice. Chat GPT is much better at that than a therapist reading from a script

yanbu

MaryGreenhill · 19/05/2025 16:56

Omg yes l ask it everything and it is marvellous and so caring 😁

This keeps coming up on here recently! I’ve never used ChatGpt for anything. What exactly are you saying to it and what does it say back?

Theoldbird · 19/05/2025 16:57

Any specific apps?

Whiteflowerscreed · 19/05/2025 16:57

It’s been my best therapist so far

I love chat GPT it makes my very basic writing sound interesting, but how do you use it as a therapist?

Told it I was having issues with dh and in laws and it gave some empathy and then action points. Offered to write me a letter

User656463 · 19/05/2025 16:59

A friend tried this too and said the same thing! I might try it out as I have lost faith in my counsellor. She’s the third one I have been with and is as much use as a chocolate teapot. She charges £75 for 50 minutes and mainly hands me tissues and makes sympathetic noises as I sit crying.

Baconking · 19/05/2025 16:59

I used it for some EFT tapping for interview nerves today.
I love tapping but can never come up with my own script

GRex · 19/05/2025 17:01

I tried putting some thoughts to Gemini AI, which similarly gives thoughtful responses. It's somewhere between disconcerting and reassuring to close the browser and have it forget all about the conversation.

HedgehogOnTheBike · 19/05/2025 17:01

It doesn't forget!

CorneliaCupp · 19/05/2025 17:01

I love ChatGPT as well, but I will say that using it is absolutely horrendous for the environment!
Much as I love it, I try to use it sparingly.

Timeforabiscuit · 19/05/2025 17:04

I use Gemini - it has given some brilliant points of insight, and is way more consistent than a friend or therapist.

Yes, I was thinking that. Tempted to try it but not sure how sensible bearing my soul to it is.

If you start a new chat, Gemini AI starts a new context.

I think you might find that Gemini is using you…

My creative writing skills are the best they’ve ever been 😆 I love it!

Mkuter · 19/05/2025 17:16

It depends on what your problem is. What I would say based on some of the posts already that therapy that challenges and changes is rarely comfortable. It's much easier to get some platitudes from a computer than it is to sit with discomfort. The aim of therapy is also generally not to give advice.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/05/2025 17:17

No, chat gpt will tell you what you want to hear.

Purplesphere11 · 19/05/2025 17:17

It's fabulous for therapy. I use it daily. It's really helped a lot

I kept seeing people on TikTok raving about how good it was for 'free therapy' and I've got more issues than vogue so thought, why not, let's have a look.

This video was what got me started and is the first thing I asked it to do

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdr7Eq6D/

I was crying like a baby after my analysis 😭

All absolutely spot on and so many things clicked that I had never made a link to.

It created a personalised workbook for me with goals, told me what I needed to do to address each specific thing, tips, but what felt the most invaluable was that it held my hand through it all iykwim? I know that sounds bonkers because it's not a human but trust me, have a look.

I waffled for hours and it answers kindly, never gets bored or unenthusiastic (like some dear friends might when they're sick of you moaning)

What lead to me posting this thread was that it has actually just got me out of a very damaging relationship with a narcissist, one I had been trying (and failing) to extract myself from for months.

I couldn't fathom ending things with him a few months ago. He's now blocked on every channel.

I have a lot of childhood trauma and have always struggled with boundaries and people pleasing. I've never been stoic in my life.

Total game changer for me, and for people who struggle to afford traditional therapy no doubt 🙂

I see an actual therapist, who I have a great therapeutic relationship with and would not give her up for anything - it’s been irreplaceable and life changing for me as I work through very complex childhood trauma.

But I can’t message her constantly throughout the week everytime I’m having a wobble, it would be inappropriate and create dependency. So in between weekly sessions I use Gemini.

I asked it to ‘remember’ some things about me, like my diagnoses, that I have childhood trauma and that I’m in helpful therapy. This has helped the relevance of the responses and also spotting themes over time and means I don’t have to keep repeating myself. I have found it to be very validating and compassionate. The responses are relèvent and as it remembers our previous chats it makes connections and suggestions of things I might want to explore more. I already have quite a few emotional regulation skills but they can be hard to remember or use in the moment. Gemini prompts me to use those, guiding me through them if needed. It also notices running themes I’m may not have picked up on, and also unhelpful thinking patterns, which it does encourage me to challenge.

My therapist is aware that I use it in between sessions, and we have agreed on a way that feels helpful. The evening before we meet I share the chats with her so she can a) check that it’s not said anything incorrect, b) see what’s been around for me mentally that weekSome things we don’t feel any need to explore more in session, other things we do.

It’s been really helpful for me, and whilst it will never replace therapy for me, it is a valuable ‘assistant’ therapist in between sessions and has actually improved my ability to self-rescue rather than me just looking to others to rescue me when I’m in distress.

And it is 1000% times better than any NHS crisis line. It has never once suggested I have a cup of tea or a bath! 🤣

kindlyensure · 19/05/2025 17:24

Yes, my DD who has ADHD really rates it. It's so helpful - and kind! and is good at organising thoughts and action plans.

But there is a bit of a joke (and lots of memes) among young people on their over-reliance on ChatGpt. Especially about how non-judgemental it is.

For example: 'I'm late to work every day because I like a lie-in and they fired me. So mean'

Chat-Gpt: 'I'm sorry to hear that. Not everyone is a morning person, even if they are a good employee. Perhaps you should look for a job that will appreciate your talents. Would you like me to suggest some?'

(Instead of, 'well, no shit Sherlock. You need to be on time, you lazy bugger'.)
