I’ve lost 52 pounds but I’m just kinda over it now

It’s taken almost a year. Lost it via diet changes- minimal carbs, no snacking, no takeaways, minimal wine etc.

But I’m just so over it. I’m just at a loss with what to do. I’ve had a wee cry. Just wish this was all done with.

I probably have another 20 pounds to go. I’m sick of being in diet mode.

I feel physically better. But it’s mental torture. I’m sick of being “good”.

A YEAR of this shit and I’m still not there.

I don’t want to think about food in this level of detail anymore. I want to go to the pub and eat a plate of fish and chips, with several glasses of wine and a slice of cheesecake. Without that fear and guilt. I have cheat days but they’re not worth the stress it causes so I just don’t bother.

You're doing brilliantly! That's a consistent 1lb/week loss which is so good, and a healthy way to lose weight.

When you lose weight slowly, you're more likely to keep it off.

If you're worried about losing momentum so don't want to try maintaining for a while, you could either find your second wind from this thread to keep going, or you could even consider upping your efforts for a 2lbs/week loss. Then you'll reach your goal within 10 weeks!! That means you could reach your target goal by mid-summer!

Then you'll be able to go into maintaining mode which will be better.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/05/2025 17:19

Can you split a fish and chips pub meal with a friend, and have a spitzer or gin and soda water?

If you deprive yourself really badly it's no way to live. It's fantastic you've come this far though. Do you think your stomach capacity has shrunk since you've been losing? You can still have whatever foods you fancy but just eat half only?
You definitely deserve to still eat enjoyable, calories dense foods sometimes. X

FleurdeLion · 18/05/2025 17:22

I have lost four stone in 3.5 years and I am also a bit sick of it. Going on holiday soon, so currently no carbs, no alcohol, two days’ intermittent fasting a week.

When I’m on holiday I will go all out and eat and drink what I like and I’ll be back to the weight I will be before the holiday in two weeks. But the last two stone are taking ages to shift.

I just know it will be worth it in the end.

ManchesterLu · 18/05/2025 17:23

I mean this kindly, but you're always going to have to be in the "diet mindset". Your default mode is (like mine) to want to be able to go out and have big meals and bottles of wine etc. You also say you can't do "cheat days" as it causes you stress. But the problem is, if you just go back to "normal" eating, you're going to gain the weight straight back.

I lost 12 stone, maintained for 10 years, then put it back on again.. so trust me when I say, I KNOW about this.

You need to calorie count and gradually increase your calories to the number needed to maintain your weight. You can give and take - so less on some days and more on others - to build in your treats. No need to feel guilty about that at all.

But honestly, this idea that you lose 20lbs and then go back to normal? It won't work.

arcticpandas · 18/05/2025 17:26

@Whis I guess you could always take Mounjaro/Ozempic. It's no effort at all because you won't feel any hunger. My friend who's on it hasn't changed anything diet or exercice wise, she's just not hungry on the jabs.

PrincessofWells · 18/05/2025 16:25

Do you realise you won't be able to eat fish and chips and cheesecake in order to remain a healthy weight?

You absolutely can

Portion control and generally healthy diet!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 18/05/2025 17:29

Sounds like you're suffering from food noise, it is like an addiction.

The mind noise is hard to ignore and constantly making you fear that you're missing out.

It is a fight between wanting and suffering from the guilt afterwards.

Would you consider overeating anonymous program? The 12 step program can really help you understand why thoughts become an obsessive thinking pattern.

It has a very high success rate and like minded individuals who can help.

It doesn't work for everyone.

But honestly, this idea that you lose 20lbs and then go back to normal? It won't work.

You may not go back to normal as such but you won’t necessarily need to always be so “strict” and eat at a deficit. I was 12 stone in my 20s - as a short woman this was heavy on me. I gained this weight at college through eating whole batches of brownies, having large savoury snacks after dinner and leading a sedentary lifestyle while living in a U.S. city for part of that time which was not walkable.

When I came back to the UK I lost 3 stone over 18 months through gym 3-4 times week, and aiming for around 1400 calories a day.

Maintained it for well over a decade, all the while regularly eating stuff like coffee and pastry for breakfast, huge plates of pasta for dinner and eating any cakes in the office - and my office had cake a lot - or baking at home. And I’d always order dessert when going with friends for dinner etc.

I think it was because I did about 15k steps a day and would sporadically go to the gym so while I didn’t lose weight much weight once I reached 9 stone I maintained it give or take 5 pounds on either end.

So no my lifestyle didn’t go back to my “college normal” which was constantly massively over-eating, and eating crazy amounts (even for my standards) of cake etc, but I didn’t have to stick to the diet and exercise regime I was on during that 18 months weight loss. I achieved a balance somewhere in the middle and only put the weight back on once I reverted to my college lifestyle.

Lucy8713 · 18/05/2025 17:36

Well done on your amazing weight loss! I don’t know if I have any advice, but as someone who has lost 2.5 stone in the last 6 months and it feeling like such a slog, you have my sympathy. I am bored of all of it, don’t want to prepare or cook any meals, don’t want to be measuring and weighing everything and tracking it all, but realistically I know that this is the only thing that works for me. Good luck and don’t forget the amazing progress you have made x

VerityBlueSky · 18/05/2025 17:44

Maintain for a while and then restart. I had 6 stone to lose in total. I dieted from mar to nov last year and lost 2 stone. Restarted this Mar and aiming to lose another two by Dec. Will.start again in Mar next year. I want to eat what I want at Christmas and practice maintaining. As long as i weigh less at the end of the year, fine by me if not exactly where I want to be yet. It took time to get fat.

felldown · 18/05/2025 17:52

I think that's the self sabotage giving you false euphoric recall because look where eating mindlessly whatever you fancied got you to begin with?
It will stop feeling like 'work' when you no longer associate food with treats and emotions. It's exactly like an alcoholic mourning not being able to have just one social drink like everyone else. You're not like everyone else, and others who might not struggle with food and weight might well have other addictions and struggles like gambling, shopping, porn, self harm... We all have our shit to carry in this life and deal with.

treesandsun · 18/05/2025 17:56

You've done incredibly well. I agree though it is relentless. I hope that eventually I would want to drink loads of water, snack on fruit and not miss carbs but honestly some days I could kill for a pie. I find that a lot of people who are naturally slim eat what they want but the majority of what they want are really healthy choices so the odd fish and chips doesn't make a difference. Whereas overeaters the chips are a gateway into a week of poor habits.

I agree with what somebody else said above - this year will have passed anyway and you could be the way you were last year or the way you are now so even though you have more to lose you've done so well. I think when you're in the thick of it you forget how far you've come
You've lost Six standard bowling balls Or A weighted blanket (extra-large, heavy version) Or A seven-year-old child. That is amazing

Pipsquiggle · 18/05/2025 18:02

Just want to say well done @Whis

Amazing achievement. I wish I had your staying power

HerbertVonDoodlebug · 18/05/2025 18:15

You’ve done brilliantly. I agree it is really annoying. I’ve lost 2st since last year and maintained since Christmas- I feel sad that to stay this size I won’t ever be able to eat without thinking about calories and going for the least calorie option in restaurants etc- but I felt worse about being overweight, no clothes fitting well etc. I do however eat cake, go out for dinner etc and still enjoy these but it has to be just occasional. I eat chocolate every day, within my calorie allowance. I’m lucky in that there is healthy food that I really enjoy (like fresh raspberries) so I treat myself to these as often as possible!

You are doing amazing!

I just want to give you a virtual squishy hug.

You can do this 💪

Dr13Hadley · 18/05/2025 18:19

OP you’ve done fantastically well. Don’t beat yourself up. I get it. It seems like a milestone so far away but look how far you’ve come! Is there a way of tweaking your way of eating to mix things up a bit. Have you tried intermittent fasting? It’s the only thing that worked for me and it worked bloody quickly! Easy to maintain too. Hugs 🤗

To me thats just eating more sensibly instead of rubbish.

See my diet previously was so shit that to me, it's a diet. Everyone has a different definition I guess. My point is more that diets can work if they are based off a healthy model.

What dose is he on? Can I ask why he continues with it if it doesn't work for him? It must be very frustrating for him.

It suppresses the feelings of hunger that the OP is struggling with. Which is why many celebrities become emaciated all of a sudden...

He lost 2 stone at the beginning but has put one and a bit back on.
He started in October, seems like a waste of money to me.

I have been on Mj for 6 months and trust me it takes effort, day in, day out, of effort. So please don’t insult me by saying it takes no effort at all when quite frankly you don’t know what you’re talking about!

I am really sorry @Whis that your thread has been derailed.

It might be a good idea for him to maybe look into one of the alternatives, wegovy, ozempic etc.
