I’ve lost 52 pounds but I’m just kinda over it now

It’s taken almost a year. Lost it via diet changes- minimal carbs, no snacking, no takeaways, minimal wine etc.

But I’m just so over it. I’m just at a loss with what to do. I’ve had a wee cry. Just wish this was all done with.

I probably have another 20 pounds to go. I’m sick of being in diet mode.

I feel physically better. But it’s mental torture. I’m sick of being “good”.

A YEAR of this shit and I’m still not there.

I don’t want to think about food in this level of detail anymore. I want to go to the pub and eat a plate of fish and chips, with several glasses of wine and a slice of cheesecake. Without that fear and guilt. I have cheat days but they’re not worth the stress it causes so I just don’t bother.

Just sharing as I could very easily go eat the block of cheese in my fridge - nothing else good to eat in the house.

Can you stop dieting for now and just work on maintaining? Then come back to lose the last 20 when your ready? You’ve done amazingly well to lose as much as you have already.

I’ve considered this but I’m worried I’ll lose the momentum. And it will all just come back on again.

Be kind to yourself. How long did it take you to put on the 52lb you've lost? You've done bloody well.

Outrageistheopiateofthemasses · 18/05/2025 13:43

Well done though! You are epic.

jputthekettleon · 18/05/2025 13:44

I’ve been the same. I have gone to maintenance focusing on my fitness and strength and my body shape is still changing. I’m now ready for deficit again been in for a few weeks and I’m setting challenges before going into maintenance again it’s much longer term but working as my body and mind just need a rest from it sometimes. Same with the gym sometimes I’ll just take a week off every 12 weeks along with the diet. I call it my reset week!

DurhamDurham · 18/05/2025 13:44

You’ve done brilliantly, to sustain that level of control is no easy thing to do.
I suppose you’ll need to try to switch it and think of the last year and how you’d be feeling if you’d done nothing about reaching your goal. The year was going to pass annyway and look at what you’ve accomplished.

BeachRide · 18/05/2025 13:45

I've lost approximately 13st, and still have 2st to go to get to a healthy BMI. I've maintained at this weight now for a year. It's frustrating not to reach 'goal' - it's like stopping 25 miles into a marathon. But I'm trying really hard to see maintaining as an achievement that's just as important as losing - after all, I don't want to be dieting forever. Solidarity.

NotNowCantYouSeeImBusy · 18/05/2025 13:46

You’ve done amazingly well, you should be so proud. I’ve dieted on and off my whole life and know how hard it is and understand the effort and what you said about losing momentum ♥️ I wish I had the answer but I wanted you to know you’re not on your own

SunnieShine · 18/05/2025 13:49

You are so right, @Whis I have cut out all treats to loose weight, and it's so boring. But I want to be slimmer so I keep going...😐

Whis · 18/05/2025 13:53

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I’m having a pity party and you have all helped with your kind posts.

Wow that is honestly, in my eyes, a superhuman feat. Well done. I feel like imploding at 3.5 stone.

I too would take a rest and try maintaining for a while. I think it would be good practice for the real thing when you get there. And probably with giving yourself a bit of a break, you'll have increased motivation and momentum to do the last bit.

BangFlash · 18/05/2025 13:58

I think the vast majority of us get where you’re coming from here. There’s so much lovely food available and so many opportunities to eat it, unless you’re in some way naturally unbothered by food (like my dh!) it feels a constant battle to be mindful.

You have done so well. I would really try to keep going because once it’s lost you will then have to maintain so I would want to continue to retrain your mind and body.

whitewineandsun · 18/05/2025 13:58

That's incredible dedication. Impressive. Congratulations.

That is fucking amazing!

5128gap · 18/05/2025 14:01

I think you need to experiment with different ways of eating that mean you can manage your weight without feeling this way. You've done fantastically, but don't seem to have reached a point where you've accepted that this is your new way of eating for life, rather than an endurance test to reach your goal, after which you're free. And for any weight loss to stick, you really have to do that. If I were you I'd start allowing myself the things I loved in small portions as and when, rather than 'treat days' because you need to break the pattern of deprivation and reward, and get over the guilt associated with eating food you enjoy. Calorie counting is good for this. Nothing off the table, moderation in all things.

londongirl12 · 18/05/2025 14:02

This is why diets don’t work. You’ll give up, and end up putting all the weight back on. It’s all about balance. I’m currently losing the last few pounds, but I had pizza on Friday (homemade, delicious!!). And I have a Krispy Kreme whenever we go to the shopping centre. You are allowed “bad” stuff, but you make good choices for the rest of the day. It’s not all or nothing.

Friartruckster · 18/05/2025 14:02

Agree with pps, you are mega op to have sustained this. Losing weight is so intense. However, the losing is the first phase. Maintaining the second. Maintaining is a coming to terms with the fact the diet was the maintenance diet with a couple of tweaks.

I suspect the decision/dilemma/crisis you’re going through is whether you want to be a yo-yo dieter or remain healthy.

If you go with the mental craving you’re entering into yo-yo mode.

I would say now is the time for a fuck ton of alternatives as the antidote to feeling really what is a grief. You just can’t rationally go back there aka fish, chips, wine, cheesecake. You can have one but not all.

Hold your nerve op. Your knees will thank you in the end.

Theshallows1167 · 18/05/2025 14:03

Why do treat days cause you so much stress OP?

What I found the hardest part was getting back on track after my ‘treat day’, and sometimes it ended up being a treat month rather than just one or two days. But I always got back on track and carried on.

I think you might be restricting yourself too much and being too strict if you feel like this. Fish & chips, some wine and a slice of cheesecake isn’t going to ruin your progress. What will you do when you’ve lost all your weight and you’re trying to maintain?

tiv2020 · 18/05/2025 14:04

OP you are amazing! That you have achieved this through sheer willpower is monumental!

Since you said it was all through dieting- can you look into getting some exercise into your routine?
There was a fab article on the Guardian recently about someone who changed their mindset about exercise by starting to do a daily 45seconds plank.
It does not have to be a big production, just a brisk 10 mins walk outside can get you feeling less stressed!

Jem96 · 18/05/2025 14:10

OP, I am so envious as someone at the start of this long journey after two babies and a lot of weight gain. Congratulations! You don’t have much to go. I’d definitely loosen up on the weekends and just track in the week.

dontblameme · 18/05/2025 14:11

Wow that is an incredible loss already! Can you get to a gym and carry 2 x 12 kilo weights around for a bit, do the stair machine with them for a bit? Then let them go and see how good that feels that you are no longer carrying that weight around with you 24/7.

Someone2025 · 18/05/2025 14:11

Whis · 18/05/2025 13:40

I’ve considered this but I’m worried I’ll lose the momentum. And it will all just come back on again.

😢

But it seems you will loose momentum if you continue

Take the summer off and just maintain, you have done very very well so far so give yourself a break, 52 lbs is tremendous, I’m struggling to loose 5lbs?!?

Wallywobbles · 18/05/2025 14:12

I’ve been on the same weight for 4 months at least. Despite being on MJ. But my body shape continues to change so I’m trying to live with that NSV. I’ve increased my gym and swim to 4x a week from 3 and that has made a considerable difference to the shape. I’m still at a BMI of 36 so a 20-30kg to go.

What do you really miss? Sometimes we will go out for a meal somewhere really nice and I’ll have what I want as long as it’s got loads of protein in. I’m very even has a few crème brûlés. If I share with DH I get the same amount of pleasure as a full one. A few chips and the novelty wears off as a rule. I know battered fish would be a mistake though!
