Live and let live and I understand people love it, but it’s a mystery to me? DH has been glued to telly today watching Crystal Palace!

I don’t get it either, but I understand that it’s a massive thing for some people. It would be great if all footballers were excellent role models, so young people could try to emulate them. Fortunately for me, DH isn’t a fan.

BakelikeBertha · 17/05/2025 19:20

I absolutely LOATH football OP! My ex husband lived for the damn sport, it drove me mad, and then he started following cricket too!! Just too, too much! Thankfully, I'm now married to a man who hates sport almost as much as I do. It's heaven! No more spending hours listening to all the B.S before a match, no more listening to them all chewing over everyone's performance afterwards. Such a relief!!

dannyufcfan · 17/05/2025 19:20

Are you new to living in the UK? lol

You must be used to it by, now.

ilovesooty · 17/05/2025 19:21

They've made history today.
OK, you don't get it.
No doubt this will attract all the usual football haters and people who say they wouldn't have married a man who enjoyed football.

Jobsworth7 · 17/05/2025 19:22

It's a competition - we as humans love them. I don't really understand Love Island or rugby but love football and The Traitors. It's also tribal and gives people a sense of belonging. Crystal Palace had never won a major trophy so seeing tens of thousands of fans partying at Wembley was just brilliant.

Threads on here always turn into "Overpaid idiots kicking a ball" though. Throw in a bit about nurses/NHS workers and it's Mumsnet bingo.

TokyoSushi · 17/05/2025 19:22

If you do get it, it’s an utterly, utterly glorious game!

carben · 17/05/2025 19:22

You don’t have to get it. There’s enough who do. Many, many congratulations to Crystal Palace. The last game of the season at Anfield will be the EPL winners v the FA Cup winners. What a celebration that will be! This season has been the best - honourable mention to Newcastle.

TooGoodToGoto · 17/05/2025 19:22

It’s a great sport and history was made for Crystal Palace!

My husband's going (home fan)! I am jealous beyond belief.

JoyousEagle · 17/05/2025 19:23

I find it very dull.

But then, I like watching tennis and some people find that boring. I’m also not averse to snooker, which some (a lot?) of people are bored to tears by.

I do think people need to chill out about it though. It’s a football match, no one’s died.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 17/05/2025 19:30

I love football but wish I didn't. It's so bloody frustrating.

Honestly don't know why I love it or how it started 🤔

RobertaFirmino · 17/05/2025 19:36

I love the game and I'd never have married a man who didn't love it too. Palace aren't my team but it was an absolute delight to see the joy on the players faces. Especially Eze! My own team will be getting their cup on the 25th (when we play Palace!) and I can't wait!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/05/2025 19:41

I'm puzzled too. So I have recorded it and will watch it later in the week, so please don't tell me who won or drawn or anything.
I will probably watch it on Wednesday as tonight it is the big Euro thing, with singing etc. etc.
Actually I don't really like that either, so I may record that and watch that on Thursday after that documentary of Devon farmers - 'Emmerdale'

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/05/2025 19:46

No one is talking about overpaid idiots, but it’s perfectly reasonable to say that you don’t understand the enthusiasm many people have for it.

I don’t understand the enthusiasm for any of the Love Island genre of programmes either. We’re all different and we enjoy different things. As long as we are respectful of differences, surely it’s OK to say you don’t get something others do.

Screamingabdabz · 17/05/2025 19:48

It’s a modern day way for groups of men to emulate tribal battle. I just think it’s a saddo bit of kicky ball but I guess if it stops them engaging in the real thing then let them crack on.

tobee · 17/05/2025 19:49

Ooh a "I don't understand why people like football" thread on Mumsnet, there's a novelty.

ilovesooty · 17/05/2025 19:51

saddo bit of kicky ball
I guessed someone would be around to sneer and patronise.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 17/05/2025 19:51

I don't get the obsession with soaps but plenty of people watch them and talk about them non stop
I was in a pub once and the people at the next table were loudly discussing what I thought was a significant life event for one of them. Whilst I wasn't particularly trying to listen the conversation was loud enough I couldn't help but overhear. Took me almost 45 minutes to realise they were discussing Eastenders

MissAnthr0pe · 17/05/2025 19:53

I think you either get it or you don't. I was glued to the telly today and I'm not even a Palace fan (lifelong gooner)

Not yet, they're not. It'll come.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 17/05/2025 19:55

I started a thread as DH and DS were at Wembley as Palace games and I was so nervous.

Not only was it a lovely thread but many people explained why it meant so much more than football.

I also disagree about them not being good role models. Many in the Palace team are fantastic role models, do tons for both charity and their community. Zaha, who used to play for Palace funded the entire women's team for a while season(yes definitely worth arguments about funding disparity between men and women).

It will mean a huge amount to the area, it's so so maligned and it's about time we have something positive to celebrate and be associated with.

Endofyear · 17/05/2025 20:24

I love football, grew up with a football loving dad and it's always been a big thing in our house. I especially love the FA Cup 🥰 if it's not your thing, it's not! I don't get people's obsession with Formula 1 or cricket but each to their own!

tillyandmilly · 17/05/2025 20:26

Kicking a football across a patch of grass - nope don’t get it! Luckily husband hates football!

elusiveemz · 17/05/2025 20:32

You don't have to get it

I'm a huge, huge football fan. I watch every game my team plays, every England game and as many other games as possible. With four football mad males in the house(omw of whom plays in a team), plus a young daughter who is also showing signs of being footie mad, it's a massive thing in our house and irs lovely because we all bond over it.

Not everyone likes it. I don't get the love for rubgy or cricket, but that's fine because it would be boring if everyone liked the same. But I hate it when people look down their noses or are snobby about it.
