Live and let live and I understand people love it, but it’s a mystery to me? DH has been glued to telly today watching Crystal Palace!

We all have different interests, and we don't actually have to understand though. As long as his enjoyment/upset/emotions are never targetted toward you in a negative way then no harm done. I quite enjoyed watching the 2nd half, though missed the first half and the goal. I also enjoyed the highlights of Bayern München via Hoffenheim.

How about young girls? Many of them play and watch football.

Some aspects of football fandom are unsavoury, sure. But it is bigoted and ignorant to say football itself has a "vile culture".

Eleven million adults and kids play football regularly just in the UK and match attendance is 55 million throughout the season. The global TV audience for the Premier League is around 1.8 billion.

Yep, it’s vile. It promotes discrimination, homophobia, racism, toxic masculinity, violence and hooliganism. DV cases spike during significant home and international matches.

They've made history today.
OK, you don't get it.
No doubt this will attract all the usual football haters and people who say they wouldn't have married a man who enjoyed football.

And here I am to say that I could never find an obsessive football fan attractive in any way

Can’t bear laddish football culture. It’s gross. And imagine caring about 11 millionaire strangers so much? I can’t comprehend. People feel such a need to ‘belong,’ it’s low self esteem.

I get people don’t always like - or understand - other people’s hobbies but the self aggrandising of people who think they’re somehow better because they don’t like football really baffles me.

The desire to belong isn’t low self esteem - it’s human nature. You personally might not find that through football but being social creatures is a large part of what makes us human. Would you say it was low self esteem that made people enjoy singing in or listening to a choir?!

My self esteem is bob on, but I still want Sheffield United to beat Sunderland next week at Wembley! Not entirely sure what that’s got to do with my self esteem anyway but by all means keep trying to psychoanalyse everyone who like different things to you if it makes you feel superior, thus, boosting your self esteem.

I went to Upton Park in as an away LFC fan (we weren't good then - I think we lost) and it was a brilliant stadium.

Edited

It really was a fantastic heart of the community and had an atmosphere that can’t be replaced.

And coming from the area it wasn’t just the matches, it was the way the pubs etc cans alive on match days.

Sadly the new stadium although impressive is in the middle of nowhere other than near a shopping centre. There’s no heart or community spirit.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 18/05/2025 10:50

People feel such a need to ‘belong,’ it’s low self esteem.

What a ridiculous comment. That need to belong to something isn't exclusive to football.
It's nothing to do with self esteem, it's part of being social beings.
We find that sense of belonging in lots of different ways, team sports is just one way.

To dismiss that as a self esteem issue is just stupidity.

Don't blame male football players for some men's abuse of women.

I always think there’s a little bit of snobbery when it comes to people liking football. It’s probably seen as a bit of a working class, pub dwellers game.

Indeed.. and what is wrong with that anyway?

The snobbery towards football on MN is ridiculous.

Football is traditionally very working class and a bit rough (albeit the PL crowd is more gentrified these days than it used to be).

MN is very middle class liberal.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 18/05/2025 10:51

DV cases spike during significant home and international matches.

Due to alcohol not football. They also increase during hot weather, bank holidays and Christmas.

I understand that. I was saying there nothing wrong with something being working class or having its roots in working class culture.

A game for thugs. The women's game is more civilised.

This is untrue. I work in this area and it spikes if the man’s team loses. Alcohol isn’t a significant factor. There are differing identified reasons for the other periods you mentioned

More sneering and patronising.

Yesterday my son had his football final and the team they support played (and lost ) the FA cup final... they were both at home by 8pm with their makeshift Eurovision Song Contest scoring system cheering on their favourite acts.

Don't assume all football fans are the same.

Are you really saying alcohol isn't a significant factor here? Or the personality of the individual?
Football is just an excuse, it's not the cause.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 18/05/2025 11:02

That's what I'm calling out...
The snobbery towards working class people.

I don't like football and agree about it being dull, love tennis and have got back into snooker after being off it for a few decades (I was really into it back in Jimmy White's heyday).

But what I like best is cricket: not the limited over game, but the full 5-day stuff. Sadly, I can't justify paying for a sports subscription, so don't see much cricket these days. I really miss it.

You can watch the County Championship free on YouTube!

Male behaviour is the problem.

Kicking a football across a patch of grass - nope don’t get it! Luckily husband hates football!

Everything sounds stupid when you try and reduce it to its base level, and makes you sound a bit stupid too when you ignore all the cultural baggage we bring to it.

You could say the same about anything people love: art, mountain-climbing, crafting, owing a pet. Some people are obsessed by these things. Some people don't get it. It's fine. You don't have to sneer at the thing you don't understand.

Indeed. Typing words on a screen doesn't sound that interesting either....😬
