Will these balloons ruin my wedding?

I am getting married in a historic, landmark in Aug. The venue has been quite strict on the things they will allow. It has been annoying at times but it’s a compromise we have to accept.

I want to add a fun element to the disco. I have found these balloons and think they are perfect. I showed the venue wedding coordinator and they said they’ve had bad experiences with balloons (wtf?) in the past so “they wouldn’t”. I feel this is overly dramatic. How hot can it get? It’s a medium sized period room (enough space for 85 people to dance).

The party room is going to be very low lit with up lights. I think the led balloons will be just right.

Do you think the venue is being ridiculous?

What exactly are you asking? The venue hasn't said no. They've just advised against them. You haven't clarified with them exactly what the issue is and we don't know. You don't want anyone's opinion on how they look (a matter of taste and not up to us anyway). What are you hoping to get out of this thread?

This is the vibe.

Sinderellas circa 1987? Lovely.

In any case, if they don't want to collect 99 bits of plastic from the ceilings, 99,000 bits of plastic off the floor,12 people off their tits from inhaling helium or dealing with somebody who thinks they're messing with her vision, it's up to them.

I’m hoping for people’s experiences with balloons in Summer in England. People have shared that. And Im very appreciative.

Why would you want a tacky wedding vibe, and if you did why book the venue that you did, why not just book some tacky venue?

Putting this kindly they probably do not fit in with the style of the venue and don't look very well.

Does the venue have high ceilings. Maybe they have had balloons float up to the ceiling and had difficultly getting them down particularly if there was a tight turn around between weddings.

That's the complaint at a local hotel in their ballroom

It’s citch. And quite popular these days.

Not everyone wants a swing band in a tent.

In my experience people have a lot more fun in these types of clubby atmospheres

Are the leds a fire hazard I wonder? Feeling old and sensible with that question

I;m pretty sure LED lights are cold to touch ( also in the old and sensible camp when I think "Will these lights burn the cats ?" )

Maybe the helium if it touches electric lights ?

Ask the venue I would suggest. They are quite specific balloons and the venue will surely know exactly what they're getting at more than anyone here will. You're just going to get a load of sneery comments here about your taste

JosephGeorge · 16/05/2025 15:07

People will end up letting them loose outside to litter the countryside and potentially cause harm to animals. Seems a good reason to change your mind?

cordelia16 · 16/05/2025 15:08

I would think a venue that has had negative experience with balloons in the past would be a better judge than random people on a forum?

user3879208717 · 16/05/2025 15:08

My friend works at a big house that is a wedding venue. It’s a massive place weddings are often in a marquee there as well as inside the house.
Fire lanterns are banned because at one wedding they didn’t get very high and set fire to an ancient tree in the park. Fire brigade were not amused, can understand why, who thinks letting burning litter loose into the night sky is a good idea!
Another wedding let a big bunch of helium balloons go by mistake and they got caught in nearby electrical wires and turned the power off to the village.
So I’d bet they’ve had a bad experience one way or another in the past with what you’re asking to do OP.

Cynic17 · 16/05/2025 15:08

Their venue, their rules.
These balloons are not good for the environment.
Also, some people have a genuine phobia of balloons.
As already mentioned, they look a bit nasty and tacky.
For all these reasons, ditch the balloons and just spend your budget on fabulous flowers.

Once the celebs stop flying on private planes every 5 mins I will consider not using balloons as a one off for my wedding day

Edited

The thing is op it’s not just a one off if everyone has the same thought process is it? It’s potentially every wedding, which amounts to a lot of squandering from the earths resources, all for that ‘insta’ moment.
Will it ruin your wedding? Probably not, will it make your wedding anymore memorable? Doubt it. Will it result in more waste? for sure. Do you care? Probably not, should you care, probably.

Plickers · 16/05/2025 15:09

They haven’t said no. Just “I wouldn’t”

Are they helium, its a finite resource which is running low, this is impacting several sectors including medicine. I don't know why it hasn't been banned from sale for things like balloons.

I think of to was a fire risk the reception would say no. We aren’t able to do candles for that reason

Couldn't you have LED candles? Admittedly the decent ones are not cheap.

I don’t like the look so just not bothering. Hence having to get creative to create atmosphere.

Those balloons are tacky and an environmental horror show. I'm team venue on this.

They look a bit like jelly fish

My thought exactly.
But I like jellyfish.

DappledThings · 16/05/2025 15:12

Nobody is going to pay that much attention to your "vibe" or remember that you had light up balloons a couple of days afterwards.

Seems like a fairly pointless thing to get the venue annoyed about and likely to cause you far more stress than any positive impact on anyone's enjoyment of the day.

Do you mean 'Kitsch'?

Delphiniumandlupins · 16/05/2025 15:14

Have you considered how you will get the balloons down afterwards? Will the venue charge you extra for retrieval and disposal?

A stately home near us has events but won’t allow balloons as it has very high ceilings where helium balloons are ‘lost’ and a pain to retrieve. Could this be the reason? Also balloons are bad for the environment.

yes I was wondering if it was this reason too, those ceilings are so high.
I like them though op, be nice to have your wedding exactly as you want it.
