To be nervous to buy a house with no immediate neighbours

Hello

we are house hunting and have seen a house that ticks all the boxes other than it is not in a village setting we are used to. My partner thinks it is perfect!
closest neighbour is about 200m down the road. Nearest town is less than 10 mins drive to the centre. There is a big Waitrose 5 mins away. Opposite (these are down a drive) a big golf course and tennis club.

would you be scared having no immediate neighbours?

thank you

No id hate it. I wouldn't even like to live in a detached house. I live in a terraced house and I love the fact if I hurt myself or am getting murdered someone would hear and be able to help. I would also be more worried about being burgled in a house that isn't overlooked or visible to others.

Feetinthegrass · 15/05/2025 15:37

You need to factor in if your dc are going to be happy with the arrangements, especially in the winter? Being left at home? If you are sociable it’s not ideal. You might feel isolated. My guess is you might get used to it.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 15/05/2025 15:46

Some think that because there’s no one around they’re safe, but I tend to think that no one would hear my screams. But on a much brighter note there’s less people to kill you.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/05/2025 15:50

Not really worried about neighbours or not - but I could never live anywhere that doesn't have pavements, street lights and a convenience store no more than a five-minute walk away.

That would be my dream home and I'm already detached but not enough lol. I'll swap with you if you do buy it and get sick of it 😉

Springtime43 · 15/05/2025 15:59

DH and I were interested in a similar-sounding property. But after consideration, DH (who never usually bothers about this sort of thing) commented "we'd need to spend at least £10k on security, and are the police likely to turn up if we get an intruder in the night?" We didn't take things any further.

I WFH for 3 days per week, and I'm not sure I'd want to be quite so alone?

prelovedusername · 15/05/2025 16:00

You had me at Waitrose…

Taking the dream of no neighbours to the extreme there’s always islands for sale .
I could easily put up with the cold for one of these

I would love to have no neighbours. I wouldn't want to be anywhere with no shops or facilities in walk-in mg distance though

We are considerate neighbours so fancy going halves on a island we could live opposite sides 😂

You need to hook this house up with the other poster who can't deal with neighbours in their garden

Ahh I love goats especially mini ones I'd have a farm if i could lol

outdooryone · 15/05/2025 16:14

200m and basically in a village? Blimey, that is a teeming metropolis.

FWIW, I lived in one house with next neighbour nearly a mile away...and that was a single farm yard...

Meadowfinch · 15/05/2025 16:18

It sounds perfect.

I live with my DS in a house on its own, with meadows behind the house and woodland opposite us. It's lovely.

Our village is about 300m away, an easy stroll to the pub. No street lights but we have head torches. There are people within running distance should we ever need help but we've been here 15 years and no problems so far. We have a lot of owls & foxes though so it's not quiet.

Who owns the land around you? Have you checked the local council planning site?

DrPrunesqualer · 15/05/2025 16:18

Well @Wednesdayisme

Ive spotted an island with
seals !!!!
7 properties
A lighthouse and
A pub

We could have 3 houses each.
Split the other house and lighthouse and fight over the pub 🤣🤣

£2.5mill

Woofie7 · 15/05/2025 16:24

Been in this situation. As long as you have friends somewhere within an hour you can call in an emergency. Go for it !
I loved it .
there can be a lot of wind noise in the winter time . It’s hard to move back to civilisation afterwards.
I’m assuming you drive .
if a neighbour is 200m and a shop is ten mins then that’s not really alone .
get an Alexa then if something happens you can just shout … Alexa ring husband/ friend etc . It rings them and then you can get help .

Augustus40 · 15/05/2025 16:28

My idea of a dream home. No neighbours would be bliss! No cars parked near our home no noise when visitors sit in their garden no messy unkempt gardens to look at plus overhanging trees to put up with over the fence.

I noticed our neighbour one side has started putting up flashing lights along her fence that come on at night. Does anybody actually do this except for Xmas! So unbelievably tacky! Looks really shite.

Thisisittheapocalypse · 15/05/2025 16:29

Only if you're prepared to run your children around to their friends' homes/events all the time. Not fair to park them in the middle of nowhere and expect them to do nothing.
