To be nervous to buy a house with no immediate neighbours

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 12:30

Hello

we are house hunting and have seen a house that ticks all the boxes other than it is not in a village setting we are used to. My partner thinks it is perfect!
closest neighbour is about 200m down the road. Nearest town is less than 10 mins drive to the centre. There is a big Waitrose 5 mins away. Opposite (these are down a drive) a big golf course and tennis club.

would you be scared having no immediate neighbours?

thank you

It's absolutely fantastic not having immediate neighbours. But we do live at a busy junction so plenty of people passing, and boats going past too. Parcels get left in safe places etc .

Chicken5ausage · 15/05/2025 13:38

Honestly it sounds wonderful. If you don’t want it OP please send the link to me!

DoYouReally · 15/05/2025 13:38

I grew up where my nearest neighbours were 200m away. You can walk it in less than 3 minutes - about the lebght of 2 football pitches.

Since then, there are 3 more houses in between. I know which my parents prefer!

I think you are been unnecessarily concerned.

comfyshoes2022 · 15/05/2025 13:39

I would feel insecure to be isolated like that in case of emergencies and generally wouldn’t enjoy having to drive everywhere.

I'm well jealous. Buy a big freezer, keep your pantry well stocked, try to keep on good terms with your neighbour and keep your vehicle in good condition. Make sure you can manage for a week with no electricity, that includes entertainment as well as food.
It might be an idea to join the preppers board.

it's 5 minutes to Waitrose!

What does it border? If farmland I would check that pesticides are not sprayed close to your property. I would also check the situation re crime as isolated properties are more likely to be broken into.

There are rules around spraying that should stop that happening anyway (have relevant certs)

User5274959 · 15/05/2025 13:41

I lived like this and it had its upsides but when I was the only adult there I sometimes got spooked at night,

I'm much happier now in a "normal" detached house in a cul de sac

Howmanycatsistoomany · 15/05/2025 13:42

Our nearest neighbours are about a mile away in either direction. Nearest (small) town is about 3 miles so easily walkable. It's bliss.

She hardly needs to prep if there's a big Waitrose 5 mins away!

Headabovetheparapets · 15/05/2025 13:48

It’s how we live & find it perfect🤗
As others has said keep your pantry stocked, although you have nearby Waitrose so might not be quite so important, also be aware than in a utility outages more populated areas will take priority to get back on so be prepared to be a bit self sufficient (batteries, power banks, camping stove etc.)
we do have cameras but they are more for wildlife watching than security🤣 & also a camera doorbell as we may not be near the front drive for deliveries.
If it suits your you’ll love it, good luck🤗

funinthesun19 · 15/05/2025 13:49

It’s a dream for me, but in all honesty it would take some getting used to and I would have the same worries as you.
As someone who lives in a terraced house with neighbours everywhere, suddenly being on my own (especially at night), would be creepy. But of course wonderful! I’d soon get used to it, but I’d have one eye open at night until then!

No neighbours?
Sounds perfect to me! 🙂

Squared.

BangFlash · 15/05/2025 13:55

I would do it but I share your concern. We have a pleasant chat-in-passing relationship with our neighbours rather than being friends. However they can be useful - taking in parcels, feeding the cat, helping to rescue husband from a tree!- and it means you have immediate help if needed and extra security.

I think I’d need a dog to feel safe.

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 13:55

There is a bus stop about 25m away which has buses every hour to the nearest town. I think it’s because of the tennis/golf club which is v popular. So once our kids are older they could use this?

Haha yes Im hoping I will get used to it or if not we can renovate and sell it in a few years!

Link? It sounds like bliss, I’ll have it if you don’t want it 🤣
Neighbour wise 200 metres is fine, also it’s unlikely anyone will save you in an emergency. They’d be too busy saving their own skin! or just watching or on holiday - anything. Crunchy driveway, cameras, cctv, baseball bat under the bed just kidding.

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 14:00

Sorry for everyone asking I don’t feel right sending a link as think we’re going to put an offer in!! If we don’t I will of course send the link

No neighbours is wonderful and @Newhomeandgarden on another thread that doesn’t like their neighbours using their garden should have perhaps chosen the same. 🤣🤣
Perhaps Newhome can swap with yours

Peace and quiet OP, lovely!

Oystersandchampagne · 15/05/2025 14:04

I am a people’s person so would feel quite isolated, particularly in the evening when it’s dark . I was brought up in a huge 400 year old detached cottage and as a teenager I hated being in the house on my own .I do have a very wild imagination 😂

DrPrunesqualer · 15/05/2025 14:06

Its not like you are in the middle of nowhere OP
You have a supermarket 5 minutes away, a town 10 minutes to the centre and a bus stop practically on your doorstep

If anything given all of the above I’d be worried the land around you will be developed for new housing, it sounds like a prime spot

Todaywasbetter · 15/05/2025 14:07

go there on a saturday night when the clubs are full.

romany4 · 15/05/2025 14:08

Absolute dream for me.

As someone who's got a neighbour who has had screeching pool parties and music pumping loudly every single day we've had this sunny weather, I'm dreaming of silence!

TheDogsMother · 15/05/2025 14:08

Sounds like my idea of heaven

Yes it’s deffo not in the middle of nowhere! This will be the closest to town we have ever been. The fields around are a greenbelt, does that give any protection for future building?

Honestly, if you’re this worried about it now, it’s probably not for you,
