Every shopping result when I search for something on Google is bloody SHEIN. I’ve never shopped there in my puff!

“light summer shirts”

SHEIN SHEIN SHEIN SHEIN SHEIN plus a few other obviously bullshit Chinese companies just to spice things up a bit.

Fuck sake.

“In my puff?”
Ive had loads from there. High quality dresses, skirts, corsets, platform boots. Finally somewhere with goth clothes, accessories etc that isn’t overpriced. Been waiting years for something like this. Maybe it’s just not for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheInternetNeverForgets · 14/05/2025 01:24

Whatever. Loads of the stuff on Amazon can be found on Temu for a fraction of the price. Literally. The same products.

PiggyPigalle · 14/05/2025 01:59

Internet was so helpful in its early days. I sourced all the materials, gained knowledge and everything needed to build a large detached house.
If I tried that now, I'd get nowhere, because all that counts is who pays the most to be at the top of the listings.

That small brick yard I used couldn't afford to be found on the internet now, it's dominated by giants.
Stupid thing is, we already know the giants, it's the more niche, unique sites that we'd like to see.

I bought 8 dresses for work a few weeks ago. Cost £60. 7 of them are excellent. 1 is a bit meh but it was £3 something

🤣 careful admitting that on here there'll be people along soon to tell you how horrible you are from buying from them! It's seems like it's akin to murder or something 😆 😆 😆

Missey85 · 14/05/2025 02:24

Newmeagain · 14/05/2025 00:55

That’s not quite true. Companies that operate in the U.K. do have to do due diligence to ensure they are complying with modern slavery legislation, etc. Companies like Shein do no such thing. The clothes you buy are the product of human exploitation and environmental vandalism. In fact they are literally covered with sweat, tears and hazardous chemicals. And don’t fool yourself - they are cheap and nasty.

🤣🤣🤣 you keep telling yourself that if it makes you happy but some of the worst offenders for running sweatshops are the high street stores! Who do you think made your iPhone? It was probably made by some 5yo in china but nobody is gonna start boycotting them! Look up the warehouse caught fire and apple just locked them in and left them there!

CharlieRight · 14/05/2025 02:42

Never heard of Shein before today but I was intrigued and looked up some articles to find out how awful they are and why.
Quite a lot of the claims are hard to believe; workers in Guangzhou paid 4000CNY per year (Elle Aus), impossible, the office cleaner in my factory is paid more than that per month and we are in a less developed area where wages are lower. Six day working weeks is situation normal here and because of the ridiculous way they arrange public holidays people will work a 7 day week 3 or 4 times a year - I imagine that could give the rise to the "working over 60 hours per week in violation of local labour laws" claims (this would apply to anything sourced in China including from respectable global brands).

I would say they are just a convenient target for anti Chinese sentiment, people who have never lived here can lap it all up out of context and have a good hate.

FWIW China has been improving H/S/E I have experienced the changes over the last 7 years, but their standards are lower than the UK for example

Catladywithoutacat · 14/05/2025 04:06

Thank you for posting this I’m a regular at shien, Temu. I won’t be anymore

WhiteRosesAndThistles · 14/05/2025 06:22

I would love to buy exclusively from Joanie, Boden (although I think that's been banned by mn because of a fox hunting story?) White Company etc however we are a low income family. We both work full time to keep our teenagers fed and clothed, my daughter in particular loves shein as the clothes are fashionable and within her price range.
I have also had some really nice things from them, especially nightwear and summer dresses, I am a big woman and their 'curve' range is fabulous, much more choice than most brands that source a few flower covered shapeless tops and call it quits.
They are popular because they cater very well to their target market.

Good luck trying to save the world. Most everyday people cannot afford the prices of most modern good quality clothes retailers. And for what it's worth, most high street shops are also sourcing from very similar factories in china and India and elsewhere.

You can guilt trip people on ethics, but the reality of people's disposable cash Vs ethical dilemmas isn't always as simple as that. It's a privileged position to turn down a massive cost save whether you like to admit it or not.

Edited

That doesn't work. You can swap, charity shop or vinted for cheaper or even free without fucking over the planet.

DanglingMod · 14/05/2025 06:52

I tried the same experiment as a pp and just googled "light summer shirt" and all my results were from shops I shop at: Next, M&S, John Lewis, Oliver Bonas, Hush, H&M, Seasalt, Hobbs... I don't think I've ever had S or T come up on my search results or even seen an advert from them.

Amazon, on the other hand, is now completely unusable other than to search specific brands. Otherwise, all Chinese results

I don’t understand how because I mostly shop at Next, Seasalt, and H&M. I’ve never even clicked on a SHEIN link before.

I never use Google for clothes shopping. I just search on the websites of my favourite clothes stores.

I don’t give a damn about SHEIN. I don’t like my search results dominated by any one company, whoever they are. It’s creepy and makes searching for things a pain in the hole.

Why are you quoting “in my puff”?

I need new favourite stores, though. They are hard to find with these behemoths bombing every search.

elusiveemz · 14/05/2025 07:44

I've bought things off Shein before when I've been broke but needed something.

I've got dresses from shein that are coming into their 4th year and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. They've not bobbled or fallen apart. I've bought more expensive, British produced clothes and they've bobbled or fallen apart within a year.

“1 is a bit meh but it was £3 something”

And attitudes like this are why the planet is doomed. Who cares about environmental impact (not to mention slave labour) if it was only £3, eh

It’s be nice to be in your ivory tower where you can afford to spend £60 on an organic cotton dress.

i needed 6 or 7 new dresses for work and had about £60 spare to spend. You do the math!

Those with money can afford to have a social conscience. The rest of us cannot.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 14/05/2025 07:53

They also steal independents ideas

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 14/05/2025 07:55

Bought a dress from shein. It felt like it was made from parachute material. Into the charity bag it went.

I have a wardrobe full of Reiss and Boden, all from charity shops, clothes swaps and Vinted.

Have you ever questioned why Shein stuff is so cheap?

Katemax82 · 14/05/2025 08:03

BonfireToffee · 13/05/2025 21:37

You realise that’s only possible because they use slave labour? Someone has had to pay for your glut of cheapo dresses.

Next stuff is even made in China you know

Whilst not wishing to support any use of slave labour, have you seen the wages and conditions of many high end goods? Exactly the same. Having a fancy or "respected" label is no indicator of production environment.

I don’t actually care where you shop. I just want it to fuck off from dominating my search results.

But where did you buy clothes before SHEIN existed? I have 5 work dresses I rotate with a few different cardigans. I’ve had 4 of the dresses for over 10 years, 3 of which came from charity shops. The 5th dress is a recent purchase from Vinted.

Crack on then. I didn’t realise not having much cash meant you are excused from looking beyond the surface of your cheap crap and caring about forced labour, exploitation and child labour.
