Good luck trying to save the world. Most everyday people cannot afford the prices of most modern good quality clothes retailers. And for what it's worth, most high street shops are also sourcing from very similar factories in china and India and elsewhere.

You can guilt trip people on ethics, but the reality of people's disposable cash Vs ethical dilemmas isn't always as simple as that. It's a privileged position to turn down a massive cost save whether you like to admit it or not.

Edited

What utter and ignorant nonsense. None of us need to buy crap from companies with ethics as poor as SHEINs are widely acknowledged to be. There are many companies who sell reasonably priced and reasonable quality goods that aren’t linked to slave labour etc.
It’s not ‘guilt tripping’, it’s having a modicum of intelligence and responsibility.
I think that you need to take to educate yourself on the global impact of SHEIN and similar, economically, environmentally and in human terms.
I absolutely agree about cost savings, but that doesn’t in any way result in a need or excuse to buy crap from these appalling companies.

Jumpingthruhoops · 13/05/2025 23:28

BonfireToffee · 13/05/2025 21:37

You realise that’s only possible because they use slave labour? Someone has had to pay for your glut of cheapo dresses.

And you think higher end brands don't use slave labour? 🤔

Look - why are they selling me fishing bait?

The trousers look as foul as the bait too 🤢

I love SHEIN. Buy nearly all of my clothes from there now. Ridiculously cheap and great quality for what you pay. I'm a very happy customer.

Before anyone throws hateful comments regarding the ethics. Most major retailers have questionable ethics and use the same suppliers.

Have you actually read the reality of SHEIN? The investigations and findings?
And no, most reputable companies have had to clean up their acts.
’Ridiculously cheap’. Have you thought for a minute why this is? Or who is really paying?

I bought 8 dresses for work a few weeks ago. Cost £60. 7 of them are excellent. 1 is a bit meh but it was £3 something

“1 is a bit meh but it was £3 something”

And attitudes like this are why the planet is doomed. Who cares about environmental impact (not to mention slave labour) if it was only £3, eh

Not really a risk. I used to be very snobby about Shein... until I actually ordered from there and surprised myself how impressed I was.

Have had the odd bit where the sizing's been wild and the material questionable but, generally, it's decent quality and washes up really well. Thought I'd have a washing incident with a bright green beach co-ord I got from there. No colour run at ALL.

I wouldn't shop Shein for best - but they're definitely a 'don't knock it till you've tried it' brand.

Well it is definitely a risk when you're buying online.
A lot of things I try on don't fit right/don't look good on me so I'd it's risky buying online yes.

I try to avoid shopping for clothes online for me and hardly ever buy clothes for me online

Which is a real shame cos I used to love Dorothy Perkins when it was an actual shop

BumWormFatigue · 13/05/2025 23:36

ForHeartyPeachOtter · 13/05/2025 22:05

Shein have also ruined Vinted. Every other item on there is Shein crap. Also our local charity shops are stuffed with fast fashion polyester. It’s depressing.

I agree (who is buying 2nd hand Shein?? If the first owner has washed it twice it'll be all bobbly and threadbare...)

At least on Vinted it's easy-ish to filter it out, PLUS there's a selection. Google seems to be obsessed with Shein to the point it's ever ad / suggestion...

You're obviously in a privileged position if you have the spare funds to only purchase from places that have ethically sourced goods. I can't imagine there are that many when you dig deep.

You say I am ignorant: but the irony is, it's a privileged place to be able to not have the cost of luxuries such as new clothes a key determinent in whether you purchase them.

It also shows privilege to be able to take your worries outside of your nuclear family and have the spare resources to take on the health and wellbeing of a large group of people in another far away country/continent. Someone does indeed need to pick that hill to die on : but it isn't usually people who are just trying to buy the cheaper option dresses advertised because their excess funds are very limited.

The buyer reviews on Shein are actually really useful. Haven't really had any issues since 👍

It shows the 'mark up' on our prices. We can't pretend that isn't some of it.... Profit margins.

I wouldn't buy from shein either and they constantly come up when searching!!!

I only ever buy from www.goose-island.co.uk now, they do brilliant lives on facebook and also a private facebook page where other customers post about their outfits from there, ive made lots of friends from the group. Things places like shein could never offer.

😆😆

Need cheap? Go to charity shops.. Probably better quality especially if it's old, it's still new to you!

You'd be surprised. Charity shops now operate as a business. The prices are 'tiered' for items now. Gone are the days are 50p tops or trousers. They're tiered at '6.95' or '9.95' etc depending on how they've calculated the worth. It's mostly why I stopped buying clothes there. I don't want to pay 5.95 for someone's used Dorothy Perkins 2018 fashion dress. Books and quirky plates etc are about the only thing I buy now.

womenarehuman · 14/05/2025 00:16

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/05/2025 21:31

Type <blue lace top -SHEIN> and that'll exclude them from the results.

You can calm down now. Have a cuppa.

Human beings - and yes, women are human - are able to (and "allowed to") observe a trend and talk about its overall societal consequences without a male-dominated "calm down, dear".

Ignore the misogynists and carry on, OP!

no, I’m not privileged. I’m actually a FT carer for my husband, who has a terminal neurological disease. My only income is £83 a week carers allowance. I know what it’s like to count pennies. I still don’t buy from SHEIN or similar.

And no, it doesn’t show privilege to worry outside of your nuclear family. It shows intelligence and a wider view that doesn’t just focus selfishly on ‘me,me,me’ but on the bigger picture of how we impact our world and each other.

There isn’t such a thing as a ‘cheaper’ dress option from SHEIN. Somebody, somewhere is paying the true high price tag. Probably someone who is far more vulnerable than you are. Plenty of other, far more ethical options to access better quality and reasonably priced clothing, eBay, Vinted, charity shops, sales, clothing exchanges etc etc. This is where my clothes comes from.

Bjorkdidit · 14/05/2025 00:32

Profhilodisaster · 13/05/2025 22:23

I'd like to buy things from places that I've not heard of so don't know to google them iyswim .
So, if I want say a pair of linen trousers , I type linen trousers into the search bar, how do I get different websites to appear?

I'm also wondering this.

I googled light summer shirts and got results from M&S, Next, John Lewis, H&M, fat Face, Superdry, Rohan and other middle of the road high street brands. It's quite odd how we're all seeing a different version of the internet.

But I also find that MN is weirdly devoid of the adverts that apparently make it unusable to all other Mumsnetters.

No matter how much you insist that refusing to shop at Shein is some kind of luxury principle available only to the comfortably off, it will not change the reality of the situation. Nobody needs to buy from them. Plenty of skint people manage fine without ever going near them. I’m always tight on funds and I’m far from perfect in my application of ethics to real-world choices, but I’ve never been even slightly tempted by Shein because of their well-documented reputation for causing serious harm.

You are actively choosing to buy from them, you’re not being compelled. It’s absolutely breathtaking that you’re trying to convert it into an opportunity to lecture others on their privilege.

I've had some nice things from Shein - well made and, yes, they have lasted. It takes a bit of effort, though. Whenever I just thought "fuck it, it's only three quid", I've got what you'd expect. Things I wear for doing the decorating and feel guilty about.

In general, though, I avoid all clothes made in China except for the very few labels that give details of the factory they use. I mean, they could still be lying or being lied to, but each of us has to draw a line somewhere.

As part of the ongoing global trade wars, China threatened to release details of all the designers and upmarket stores whose stuff is made in large Chinese factories. I'd love that!

If I want a plastic thingummy or a phone adaptor or something, I find what I wanted in the UK. Then I reverse-search the images and buy the same item from Temu or Alibaba. Don't see why I should pay somebody in the UK £10 extra for passing my order on to the same manufacturer 🤷‍♀️

Mama2many73 · 14/05/2025 00:50

Same! Shein or Temu no matter what I Google!
Will never buy from them but it takes so long to wade through them all!

That’s not quite true. Companies that operate in the U.K. do have to do due diligence to ensure they are complying with modern slavery legislation, etc. Companies like Shein do no such thing. The clothes you buy are the product of human exploitation and environmental vandalism. In fact they are literally covered with sweat, tears and hazardous chemicals. And don’t fool yourself - they are cheap and nasty.
