To have turned down Munjaro?

In 2020 I was diagnosed with type two diabetes;I have since then lost 6st in weight to try to help;I was huge at 5ft 4in and a whooping 22st 10lbs.

Roll on now;unfortunately despite my weight loss I’m really struggling with my diabetes at the moment; My blood sugars are really high even when I’m not touched anything sugary.

I’m currently on insulin and statins for high cholesterol.I’ve been told multiple times in the last few months I’m at risk of early death.

which is why I’m wondering if I was right today to have turned down munjaro jabs when offered them during a routine treatment review today.

I know I need to lose more weight;I’ve been doing slimming on and off for a few years but I’m terrified of the munjaro jabs;I know people who have suffered terrible side effects from these jabs plus weight gain after stopping the jabs and I’m not liking the things I’m hearing in the media about it.

I saw another pharmacist at my GP surgery a few months ago that I don’t normally see and he said to me that he doesn’t personally recommend Munjaro as there is evidence it causes hepatitis.

Try the Human Being Diet by Petronella Ravenshear. It’s a miracle. You do a reset and then go 140g protein and 140g veg (assuming you are over 80kg) for each meal and an apple a day plus 35ml per kilo of body weight. Get the book and crack on from there! Check out #hdb on instagram for inspiration. I am on phase 3 week 5 and went on it for health reasons rather like you and it’s been awesome.

OSU · 13/05/2025 19:36

Sorry 35ml of water per kilo of body weight

2024onwardsandup · 13/05/2025 19:37

Hepatitis 😂

curiouscat1987 · 13/05/2025 19:38

Any medication comes with risks, you just need to weigh up (no pun intended) the risks of the medication against the risks of being obese. For what its worth i think theres lots of fear mongering around weightloss jabs. Have a listen to the fat science podcast, its extremely informative! Good luck to you 😄

PansyPottering · 13/05/2025 19:42

I don’t think you are unreasonable to turn down a medication that you are terrified of.

If you want to take your medical advice on hearing about people having side effects and a pharmacist then that is up to you completely.

I have had zero side effects, lost 3 stone and never went above 5mg. But each to their own. I will admit that I am worried about weight regain when I finish but I am going to try my damndest to keep it off. At least I am starting from the right end of the spectrum and don’t have that daunting hill to climb.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 13/05/2025 19:45

Would LOVE to see where this pharmacist got his information from. Hepatitis???

olympicsrock · 13/05/2025 19:45

I read the whole New Journal of medicine trial.

The risk of side effects / complications is really low and the benefits of huge.
I have taken it myself and recommended it to my patients .

Ceska · 13/05/2025 19:45

I also am not experiencing any side effects, and am having a nice steady and slow loss of 3 stone in 9 months

1 and a half to go

AdoraBell · 13/05/2025 19:46

I found Glucose Goddess on YouTube. She’s a biologist and has tips to reduce glucose spikes. While I’m trying to loose weight I found that eating vegetables/salad/protein and fat before carbohydrates.

So, my breakfast is either eggs or full fat Greek yogurt with nuts, homemade granola and fruit. I eat the nuts and half the yoghurt before touching the granola and fruit. I no longer need a snack around 11-ish.

Similar with lunch/dinner. A small salad or bowl of vegetables as a starter.

I eat much less carbohydrates now. I love pasta and now only eat half the amount I used to eat.

It sounds like you're having some very serious impacts from your weight and your uncontrolled diabetes - for me that would change whether it's worth risking the side effects some people get on mounjaro. If I were you I would go back and talk to your doctor more about the risks and benefits to you of taking mounjaro

Arraminta · 13/05/2025 19:54

Hepatitis? Seriously? Oh dear.

Anyway, back in the real world, there is hardly anything more dangerous you can do to your health than be extremely overweight.

I've lost 3 stones on MJ and experienced zero side effects. My cholesterol is much reduced and all my middle aged aches & pains have disappeared. I know several people also on it with no side effects either. Obviously there are numerous unpleasant (and potentially) range side effects to being very overweight too.

Hepatitis 😂

Someone the other day on here said someone at work had lost weight and had loads of ‘Track marks’ up their arm 🤣🤣🤣🤣

CarlyCrisp · 13/05/2025 20:01

Wow. I'm really surprised at what your pharmacist told you. There are thousands of people taking MJ, and the majority of them are experiencing the easiest, healthiest weight loss of their lives. I was on MJ for 4 months, lost the weight I needed to, then maintained by keeping the healthier eating habits I 'learned' on Mounjuro.

There are side effects with many forms of medication. The risks with MJ are generally recognised - as a pp mentioned - to be low, and the benefits are life and health-changing.

Oneborneverydecade · 13/05/2025 20:07

I had severe side effects but they passed after less than a week. I didn't carry on but I've since recommended it to friends bc I recognise that I am unusual.

Hysterectomynext · 13/05/2025 20:08

I have recently become seriously unwell due to my obesity. It’s been a real shock and I’ve been in denial about how fat I’ve become.

I'm on week 2 of Mounjaro. I have to buy from a private clinic but I’m very happy to have the chance to try something that could help me make such huge changes in my life.

no real side effects and 3kg weight loss with a lot more exercise and a loss less food. I am really excited and cautiously hopeful that I maybe will get to a normal weight.

of course you must do what you feel is right for you but if a doctor has told you your life is in danger because of your diabetes then perhaps you need to think about what’s worse. Fear of a new drug or probable sickness and worse ahead.

UmopapIsdn · 13/05/2025 20:08

In my first week of using ozempic my insulin doses halved! I've taken 6 doses now, lost 1 stone, and my sugar levels are almost always in normal range.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/05/2025 20:11

You need to do something if despite an incredible weight loss, your bloods are so high - not all T2 patients are able to control their levels, as you are now finding out.

My best mate refused them and was originally upset about the pain from peripheral neuropathy he'd developed. He lost a lot of weight when he was told he needed to start insulin, but then had the first of five strokes this time last year due to his cholesterol levels being so high for so long instead.

It's a medication designed for diabetes that treats diabetes, obesity, inflammation and high cholesterol - is that not worth giving more thought to beyond the general disapproval and scare stories?

Your GP is wrong.

Crunchymum · 13/05/2025 20:13

Quite frankly if insulin is not controlling your blood sugars then I think you need to reconsider.

Losing 6st is absolutely amazing and you should be very proud but at 5ft 4in and 16st+ you are still very overweight.

You need to thoroughly research MJ / Wegovy before discounting it.

Hysterectomynext · 13/05/2025 20:14

Food Noise, by Jack Mosley, is a fantastic book which explores the benefits and the disadvantages of weight loss drugs. It also covers diet and exercise. I’ve just finished listening to the audio version on Spotify and it was such an informative read.

(And you don't need to quote the op....)

Seeyousoonboo · 13/05/2025 20:15

My Dad died due to complications associated with diabetes, if he hadn't of died he was facing an amputation of his leg. You are ill informed OP and need to urgently do more research into it.
